i thought the play with multiple end arounds where I’m pretty sure Quinn did like 720 degrees of spinning and mostly fake handoffs was a super creative thing of beauty.

100%, a thing of beauty, pure magician on that one.

Actually, the idea to move the game to December was ABC executive and sometimes broadcaster Beano Cook. It was the Centennial Celebration of college football so Cook and ABC sports executive Roone Arledge wanted a special game to celebrate the occasion. Arledge convinced Arkansas coach Frank Broyles to move the game with the promise that President Nixon would come to the game and present a trophy to the winner, which later turned into a plaque that said Texas was the National Champion. Arledge also promised Broyles to televise the Arkansas season opener the next season against Stanford, there was a lot of maneuvering done before the game was played because of this.

The 1969 Arkansas-Texas Football Game That Made History | Here & Now

1969 Texas vs. Arkansas football game - Wikipedia

A couple of other notes about the game and postgame was that Nixon went to the press box at halftime to be interviewed by ABC. The broadcast team that day was long time ABC football analyst and former legendary coach at OU Bud Wilkenson and the Swiss Army Knife of Broadcasting for ABC Chris Schenkel on the play-by-play. He did every kind of sport for the network, college football, NBA, boxing, even the longtime popular bowling show. Nixon came in talked football. He had played football at a small California college. Texas trailed 7-0 at the half and Nixon was talking about plays and the several turnovers Texas had in the first half. He was asked how the second half would go and who would win the game. He said that he thought Texas would stop turning the ball over and come from behind and win. Arkansas scored again the first time they got the ball in the third quarter to lead 14-0 before Texas made their famous comeback in the fourth quarter to win. It didn't look good because after Texas scored and converted for two points to make the score 14-8, Arkansas marched down the field into the Texas red zone. The Razorbacks had an All-American kicker name Bill McClard, and this would be a chip shot for him that would ice the game for the Hogs. For some reason Arkansas on third and long instead of setting up the probable winning field goal, threw a pass into the endzone that was picked off by Texas.

Texas after making a first down, had the pivotal fourth and four play that everyone remembers. The time out and Street going to the sidelines and DKR calling the pass play and after starting back the huddle, Street went back to coach Royal and said, "are you sure coach?" Royal again called the pass play. Then came the long pass to Randy Peschel between three Razorback defenders as Schenkel cries "Peschel catches the ball." Texas goes on to score and take the 15-14 lead. Then Arkansas again marches down the field on short passes into range for a winning field goal by McClard. The Hogs trying to get even closer and throw yet another interception that ices the game for the Horns.

Then comes the memorable scene in the Texas locker room with Nixon to present DKR with the Championship Plaque, but the place for the winner of the game was blank because it was made before the game. Nixon says that he is going to take it back to Washington and have Texas inscribed on it because you are the National Champions. He then said he may have to give some kind of plaque to the undefeated Penn State team also, if that is ok with you Coach Royal. DKR said that was fine with him and Nixon exits to head back the helicopter to take him back to the airport.

This is the strange part. Nixon had the plaque inscribed with Texas on it and his staff was supposed to have it delivered to Austin. It never happened and for fifty years nobody really knew what happened to the plaque. Then Sports SID Bill Little did some research.

I’ve got two of those up there as well… One was top 7% but wanted to go to business school so didn’t even apply to UT as chances were slim/none to get in but “No way I’m even applying to a&m as they are weird…” even though all wife’s family went there (wife was only one in her clan to go somewhere other than a&m). The other kid chose UArk over Tech as he thought Lubbock was a shit hole the cost is about the same with the OOS discount and could room with his twin brother.

We’re headed up for the game tomorrow to see both them for the game and weekend - I’m betting both wear UArk gear to the game as they don’t want to get killed in the student section and by chance, give dad crap if we shit the bed on Sat… And i’ll be wearing my burnt orange all weekend… if anyone knows of a good UT tailgate (since it looks like there won’t be a Surly one), let me know via PM…

That's us.  Son's in the biz school and ROTC @ Arkansas.  He sent me a text this very morning @ 430am of him getting ready to go on another 7-8 mile ruck.  It's working out well for him and he's changing.  Growing.  This is the same kid that got truancy letters in HS because the little shit would sleep in after being up all night playing video games.  He even opted out of rushing as all his HS friends did it and he didn't want this to be an extension of HS.

We'll be tailgating in section 52 (the white tents set up in advance, near the little creek across the main road in front of the stadium) with Matt Kendall (look him up, if your kid needs internship options, he's one to get to know).  It's an Arkansas tailgate, but everyone is cool.  My dad will be decked out in Texas gear but bought a red AR hat to support his g-son.

Sorry to Food & Travel this up, but any recommendations on somewhere to stay Friday night to break up the drive? I can stay with family in Dallas, but leaving at 4 am to make kickoff comfortably seems like a shit idea. I know a few pages back someone mentioned it might be worth staying in OK but I wouldn't know a damn thing about towns in that area otw to Arkansas. Any recs for a motel town that won't have a meth feel?

stay at the cherokee casino hotel in roland on i40 just before the state line and you'll have a 45-minute drive to the stadium saturday morning up i540 which has lots of cops but long sightlines so it can be driven at 90 if you ride shotgun on locals

after the game you can make mcalester by dark and finish the drive sunday or push through saturday night to dallas by 10pm with a mcalester dinner stop

FDS texts like I do while drinking. My post yesterday in a thread late, probably 5-6 beers in, I texted the word “actually” in about 4-5 consecutive sentences. I know I shouldn’t post while drinking, but reading it today was kind of embarrassing.

I can’t even recall that thread now.

I like to watch rival youtube videos to see if there is any insight and I made the mistake of making through 6 minutes of this shit and these two morons are everything I imagine Arkansas fan to be:

Quote 1) Arkansas was a bigger rivalry in the 60's than OU because Texas could not play OU back then.

Quote 2) Will Trump make it? I don't know he just took office.

I spoiler-ed the shit because they are doing horns down and you really do not want to waste any time like I did on it.

I'm surprised more fans aren't concerned about the Texas run defense going against a top 10 rushing team. That's been the weakest link all season and Texas gave up 6.1 ypc to a FL RB on 19 carries. That's not too good, and FL didn't have a run threat at QB to worry about.

This game is also in Fayetteman and pig has had 2 weeks to prepare. I wonder what trick plays had sex with VB player will come up with.  Texas just better come in with their heads on straight and piss in their veins.

Look at how well Florida rushed va Georgia. They’re not a bad running team. Only gave up 81 yards in the first half though. So not concerned.

1) Florida is a good rushing team.

2) A lot of Florida's success running came in garbage time (aka, the entire second half) against third stringers. (e.g., Sydir). Florida running backs averaged 4.8 in the first half (essentially the same average they had against Georgia).

3) We still limited explosive rushing plays.

4) Yes, we aren't as good at stopping the run as last year. We are still pretty good though with a much much much better pass defense.

5) Yes, Arkansas' offense and run game can be scary at times. Fortunately, it is also very self-destructive. Let's hope that trend continues.

think the stats are a bit skewed..

08/29/24 Ark.-Pine Bluff Turf W 70-0 33 279 8.45 8
09/07/24 @ Oklahoma St. Turf L 31-39 47 232 4.94 3
09/14/24 UAB Turf W 37-27 38 266 7.00 4
09/21/24 @ Auburn Grass W 24-14 55 183 3.33 2
09/28/24 + 15 Texas A&M Turf L 17-21 30 100 3.33 1
10/05/24 6 Tennessee Turf W 19-14 44 137 3.11 2
10/19/24 21 LSU Turf L 10-34 19 38 2.00 0
10/26/24 @ Mississippi St. Grass W 58-25 37 359 9.70 2
11/02/24 10 Mississippi Turf L 31-63 37 127 3.43 3

In SEC play they are averaging 4.25, but that MSU game is massive outlier. Take that game out and it is 3.16. 3 of their 9 games (Pine Bluff, UAB, and MSU) represent 53.1% of all their total rushing yards.

Sydir was pretty good. I would add that Safeties were hanging back in the 2nd half. That tends to happen when you have a 42 pt lead. Lot of that success was schematic.

Like Florida, the key will be to get up early. You dont want to allow them to shorten the game and just pound the ock. Maye them 1 dimensional.

Yes, we should be plenty alert to this offense.   If they don’t turn the ball over, and the receivers have a better than average day, we may be in for a track meet.  This is the best offense, quarterback, running back, and receiver we’ve faced.

A HB pass with Ja'Quinden Jackson just seems too obvious but I've been expecting it to happen in this game all year.

For some reason though over the last two years Arkansas has been a much better road team than they are at home (Tennessee notwithstanding). Had great games @ LSU, @ Alabama and @ Ole Miss last year and then 2/3 SEC wins this year were on the road - but then they tend to lay an egg at home and struggle with teams like UAB for some reason. It's really weird.

rushing yards while were up by a lot don't really mean much but you have a point. ill gladly give that to Arkansas if the same outcome comes out of it as Florida. lets blow them out in the first half and laugh at them as they run the clock out in the second half. at least they can say we ran the ball on em while we celebrate.
