Again, this is not what anyone is saying. This is not a high stakes game and it is not a big game environment. It is different.

This is nothing like playing Alabama or Georgia, which is why it is crucial that the players are tuned in and don't treat it like just another shitty opponent. They have beaten us more times than not since they left the SWC. There is a reason for that, and it isn't because they were good.

So tough environment, like I said.

We couldn't run the ball worth a shit all afternoon. Terrible game.

And both Simms and Applewhite sucked.

Y2K hangover. I’m sure I have but I can’t remember a time I’ve ever felt worse than that day…I wished the computers had won.

and then that game started….at 10am.

that 3 game stretch to end the ‘99 season was so shitty…. as Bevo XIII so elegantly demonstrated in the Alamodome a month earlier

"They're bred to hate us" from home apparently. The ticket market has absolutely cratered.

I think this is a leading indicator of what I'm expecting.  If we make this a 4th quarter game we might be in trouble as their crowd will be hostile and loud.   But this is different than '21 for multiple reasons but primarily because it's an 11AM game and a fan base that has nothing to be excited about for the season.  Half of them probably fully expect to get blown out after the last game.  2021 was an early season game where all the season possibilities are still in front of you.  This Arkansas fan base has no expectations for this game beyond what it means one way or another for the Pittman tenure.   If we can jump out to an early lead there will be no energy in the stadium before halftime.

Jfc, this.

As for the game, both things are true:

It will be an especially hostile environment and they will be very aggressive against us...

AND

We are going to give them a spanking.

Good God.  Was that the year NC State blocked like 45 field goals against us in the opener?  If so, that was the year I went through 3 coffee tables.  My family still brings that up any time TX loses a game.  "Did ya break any coffee tables?"

three blocked punts for 16 points. we dominated the game otherwise.

the silver lining is that Mack FINALLY took special teams seriously after that and we ended up being one of the best in the nation at it. One of Mack's faults was that he really didn't focus on a weakness until it cost him something rather than be proactive.

We're putting up 40 on these rednecks. I firmly believe this. People forget that that 2021 team was Sark's first year and we had no talent. We have 11 players from that team, and our defense is going to go ape shit on them. No mercy. A healthy Quinn will put up 300+ with 4-5 TD's. Bond and Golden will feast. Wingo will have a coming out party. We will break their will to live, and that's a good thing. They will want no part of Sark's teams going forward. They are in massive trouble. Ant Hill, Colin Simmons, Ethan Burke, Money Muhammed, Barron will absolutely make their lives miserable. Full stop.

No talent, or young talent? Wasn’t Bijan on that team? Along with most of the guys that were drafted last year?

Both the 1999 and 2000 Cotton Bowls I had hangovers to beat the world.... Ricky Williams last game was my last game as a student and we had been partying all night long out on a friends farm drinking everything we could get our hands on.  I wound up pulling over on the I-20 shoulder driving to the game to puke which is still the only time in my life I have barfed after waking up from a hangover. Mix in those infernal cowbells and I was ready to murk some State fans around us until we started destroying them and they finally stopped.

As far as the Y2K hangover we had rented out Battlestein's in downtown Houston with DJs spinning on 3 different floors and was $35/pp for all you can drink.  I'll leave the illicit part of the story to your imagination but needless to say about 4am I decided it was time to drive to Dallas for the game.  Long about Huntsville I started nodding off and so I pulled into the next rest stop on I-45 took a party favor and said "If it wakes me up and I make the game I make the game and if not I don't" and dozed off to sleep.   Sadly the drugs worked and about 45 minutes later I was awake and headed to the Cotton Bowl.  The first half was annoying but nothing compared to that horrific 2nd half.... Eventually I wound up at my BFF from UT's parents house (his sister dated Robert Van Winkle in high school) and crashed hard after that game.

I swore I would never again attend another Cotton Bowl but when we got matched up with LSU I recanted my word and went to that game and thank god Roy Williams went into beast mode and destroyed Saban that day so in the end I got 2 of 3 Cotton Bowls that were good outcomes even if I was ready to kill people at the start of the 1999 game ;-)

What’s the story on tailgating? Also are there any bars where UT fans will congregate before or after the game?

Family and I were up there for the TN game.  There was quite a bit of mixture of both fan bases.  We ate at JJ's on W Dickson Street.  The area was really packed 3 hours before game time.  Oddly, the Arky folks were extremely nice.  I was wearing a Vol shirt (for my wife) and a Longhorn hat.  I was expecting to be berated, but I didn't get a single trash talking comment.

I think after the bonfire tragedy+the flu that ripped through the team they lost a step. And sometimes just a little bit of a distraction is all it takes.

We also had that morning of the game bullshit at the Ramada Inn or some fucking place in aggy station where the cook ‘forgot to show up’ for the fucking team meal and 80 guys had to hoof it to McDonald’s to not play on an empty stomach. Fuck those shitbags….

My favorite random trivia is can you name the only QB in Texas history to throw 5+ TD in a game 3 times (and he did it all in one season)?

AND LOST TWO OF THOSE GAMES (neither loss was his totally his fault, but still)

Name dropping Vanilla Ice. Super surly.

I had the shits during the 2000 cotton bowl. So did the Horns.

Young talent, but Sark and the players knew nothing about Arky and thejr insane asylum stadium. Card and Thompson both looked shook. Bijan did ok, as did Roschon, but remember we have Casey Cain as our top wideout.

I believe that was Sark's come to Jesus moment when he realized those hillbillies would sell their sunk pellets and moccasins just for a win.

When I went to UT I had no idea Arkansas was even a "rival". I didn't even give them a second thought other than they're a bottom dweller.

The Office Thank You GIF

There is a valid point to be made that Arkansas is hostile ground and shouldn't be taken casually, but for crying out loud the bulk of this team played at Alabama last year, Tech/Ok St/West Virginia, the Sugar Bowl last year, Michigan this year - they are used to high stakes games, games with intense crowds, and games where the local team has hate that isn't reciprocal.

Let's not forget that the team rallied around the "farewell tour" last year, embracing the chance to get scoreboard on the entire conference.  They remember the last time Texas played at Arkansas.  They know what is at stake for the SEC championship and playoff berth.

I have no idea what will happen on Saturday.  I hope they play well.  I expect they will.  But if they lose it'll be because they played poorly and not because they were blindsided and intimidated by an 11AM Arkansas crowd.

You’re missing the point. It’s not that it’s a big game. It’s that it’s a jihad game for Arkansas. That’s not anything like playing an Alabama team that has seen it all. This is a team that will be keenly focused on us and a fanbase that hates us with the passion of 1,000 suns.

Sorry but now you’re minimizing what it takes to win in Tuscaloosa against a very good Alabama team. Sure the crowd will be rowdier, but the team we’re playing is also much worse. The point is this team and coach are now seasoned to stressful conditions. This isn’t comparable to Sarks first trip there in any way.

Is Sark and Ewers still using the microphone/helmet head-set to communicate and call in plays?  Does crowd noise play a factor and can Arky’s crowds interfere with these communications?

I would rep this 100 times, if I could.

I'm guessing summa y'all have never in your sweet life had some motherfucker six inches shorter and fifty pounds lighter than you launch himself at you, land half a dozen punches before you could even react, and found yourself on your ass in the dirt with blood running down your face and half your bottom lip hanging on your chin.

It's happened to me, and I ain't ashamed. I learned. That message from Valmy makes me think it mighta happened to him, and he learned.

I'm just sayin', it might not happen this time, but if it does, don't be surprised, and be ready to get back up and kick that little fucker's ass.

I really wish I could rep this post more than once. Your example (and you and Valmy aren't alone, btw) is pretty dead on. I just hope the team is ready to come out swinging

Everyone still uses those. It can in the sense that it's harder to hear a phone call in a loud room - that's why a lot of QBs cover the sides of their helmets with their hands when the play is called in.

Any tips for parking in Fayetteville? Last time I was there it was a cluster fuck.

Yeah, go down the 2nd dirt road West of the stadium. It dead ends to a wooden gate. A lady named "Auntie Margo" will be waiting for you. She'll offer her granddaughter in marriage as payment for leaving your car there, but that would be illegal. She will also accept a batch of buttermilk biscuits and 8 rashers of crispy bacon, which is the preferred route. It's a short walk from there. But if you throw in some chicory coffee, she will personally wheel you to the stadium gate.
