Once you figure out that the United States of America has no inherent "national dignity," this all becomes a lot easier to take.

The concept of "national dignity" derives from an era in which all countries were monarchies.  So an insult to an officer in the Royal Navy was an insult to His Majesty.  And since His Majesty derived from his sovereignty over the nation, His Majesty's dignity was coterminous with the concept of national dignity.

Somehow in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries that concept made the leap from monarchies to constitutional monarchies and republics.  French national dignity was supposedly insulted by Wilhelm's treatment of the French envoy at Spa, causing France disastrously to declare war in 1870.  British national dignity--famously wrapped up in "a scrap of paper"--required it to declare war in 1914 after Prussia violated Belgian sovereignty.

But here's the thing: a nation has no inherent dignity.  We're proving that today.  There's nothing particularly dignified about the United States, its government, or its people.  Insult the United States or its head of state, and should I really give a shit?  No--I'd probably agree.

Look--real talk here: this is a country peopled by a stupid and wicked populace.  It is a country founded and fostered on conquest, murder, and slavery.  It has no "dignity;" it never did.  And once you realize that simple fact, this whole thing loses its seriousness and just becomes a bit funny.

But we are “exceptional”.

Like everything in human existence, it's a mixed bag,   The bag has some shit in it and some nice stuff.  We're digging around in the shitty part right now.

Yeah: high-minded principles like "all men are created equal," . . . written by a slaver.  Principles to "secure the Blessings of Liberty," but only "for Ourselves and our Posterity."

But let's just be real honest about those documents in which those principles are stated: they're not documents written for the purpose of stating principles.  They're political documents stated to accomplish political goals.  The Declaration of Independence was written (1) to state the bases for independence to a divided domestic audience and (2) to obtain foreign support.  And the Constitution . . . well, the Constitution is a damned mess lacking any principled backing but full of political expedients that we've never been able to get past.

And that's really the other thing that, if one can get over it, the Trump years will go down a whole lot easier--the realization that the Constitution is and always was something of a joke.  These people running around with a copy of the Constitution in their pockets and treating it as though it's some holy scripture . . . and it's a fucking joke.  They're treating it as a joke.  And it always was a joke.  It was an expediency aimed to allow the slavers to keep slaving, keep the powerful in power, and to facilitate commerce.  And anything beyond that could be massaged.  And it has been and will continue to be.

So if you don't worry your pretty little head about "but the Constitution" and realize that the only real purpose of the Constitution is to create a structure to keep the powerful in their rightful position and the poor in theirs, then your blood pressure will go down significantly and your GI doc won't have to talk to you about ulcers.

Gaetz issued a statement. Cannot find it. CNN reported. He sounds big mad.

Gaetz has vigorously denied all the allegations and has characterized the investigation as a witch hunt.

In a post on X in response to CNN’s reporting on Wednesday, Gaetz emphasized that he was “FULLY EXONERATED” by a separate Department of Justice probe. And he said he “NEVER had sexual contact with someone under 18” — a claim that is addressed in the House Ethics report, CNN has previously reported.

“My 30’s were an era of working very hard - and playing hard too. It’s embarrassing, though not criminal, that I probably partied, womanized, drank and smoked more than I should have earlier in life. I live a different life now.”

Closest I could find.

I just wanted to know if he has been charged. Convicted would be next level.

The best you have is an ethics report written by Jessie Jackson Jr, Ken Calvert and Maxine Waters?

I don't have anything other than what's been reported in the news.  My recollection of what's been reported is that there are mutliple witnesses who claim to have seen Gaetz having sex with a minor at at least one party.  He's admitted to having given money to "girlfriends", but denies it was for sex (because of course you give girls money just because you're generous).

Happy to see you continue to give him the benefit of the doubt.  Having watched him operate for approaching 10 years now I'm comfortable jumping to a conclusion or two.

You mean a report commissioned and presumably prepared by a Republican committee of the Republican-controlled House of Representatives?

Yea! The same group of people you claim are corrupt, liars, racists, etc…. That group, you now believe 100%.

When the FBI investigated this, they didn’t find anything.

Really?  They didn't find anything?  OR....they chose not to bring charges?   Because those are two different factual statements.

See, if they investigated me on suspicion of embezzling money from the South African Government, "they wouldn't find anything."  That is, they literally would find zero evidence.  Because I have literally never had any dealings with South Africa.

If, on the other hand, they investigated me on suspicion of being an ill-behaved debauched cretin when I was a college student....they almost certainly would "choose not to bring charges."  That would be for a variety of reasons -- the evidence is spotty, lots of time has passed so witness accounts are unreliable, the limitations period has passed, etc.  But I assure you, if they looked into that, the answer would NOT be "they didn't find anything."  They'd find lots of evidence of me being an ill-behaved cretin at that time.  Substantial evidence.  Significant enough that most rational people would say "yeah, I think we can all agree that Brisket was a debauched cretin back then."

That looks to be pretty similar to Gaetz's case.  There's a giant ocean of difference between "they didn't find anything" and "they found sufficient evidence, of sufficient reliability, to support bringing a case."  In that distance, there's a lot of ground covered by "a lot of evidence, to the point where it's clearly more likely than not that he committed act X."  You disregard the differences.

Which surprises nobody.  Your disingenuity is neither novel nor subtle.

I didn't voice an opinion on it.  You're the one who tried to characterize it as prepared by a bunch of libtards or something.

But, if the GQP prepares a damning report on one of their own, you can be assured that it's bad.  Probably a bunch worse than they let on.

Also, like acquittal of criminal charges doesn't mean you didn't do it, a failure to indict doesn't mean you're innocent, either.

Not to mention, we are rarely exposed to the prosecutorial decision process.  We have no fucking clue why they declined to prosecute.  The spate of special counsel reports and oddball things like the Comey letter are exceptions, not the rule.

Of all the horrible Congress critters on both sides, Gaetz has to be one of the most likely to be a pedophile, or at the very least, disgusting piece of shit. That’s not hard to ascertain just by seeing him in a single interview, let alone the vast array of shit we’ve seen from him over the years. He deserves ZERO benefit of the doubt, yet @Balcones just can’t do it.

You going to stan for Ted Cruz next?

Ted Cruz is an absolute piece of shit but no one has accused him of having sex with underage women and trafficking them across state lines.
That’s the level @Balcones is willing to go to.

The woman he trafficked and had sex with, his friends who participated/were there, the United States Congress.

Then why is he not in jail? With that many witnesses, there is plenty to convict him.

Carroll was awarded a sexual abuse win ~30 yrs ago after she claimed Trump raped her. She doesn’t even know when it happened. Blasey Ford doesn’t know the date, location or any details and she was given a day in court in Congress. But Gaetz is a pedophile with lots of witnesses.

For a long time, you could've said this about Jeffrey Epstein. You can still say it for every male associate of Epstein.

Well yeah, the government dropped the charges against Epstein on, or somewhere around, August 10, 2019. He was obviously cleared of any wrongdoing if they did that!
