It's not terrible.  It's a much better option than almond or bread juice.

less sugar (through additional filtering), no lactose, otherwise it's just an HEB brand of milk.

I was expecting that.  I was a black coffee guy for pretty much my whole adult life until about 10 years ago.  Probably had 6 or 7 cups a day until it seemed to keep me up at night.  Now it's one latte at home and I'm done with coffee for the day.  I agree on sugar in coffee.  That's disgusting.

Yeah, I was just being surly.

See, the thing is...this timeline is so breathtakingly stupid, I think the apocalypse is going to be something so utterly stupid that we can't even imagine it yet.  Like "mass suicide of all humanity over disappointment in the result of a gameshow" or some shit.

nah bro, it's going to be nasty death by a thousand cuts. first the global poors with 140 degree heat but it will come for everyone. shit's going to get rough and cost of eggs infected with bird flu is only the first stage. tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes in Europe, tornadoes in France, condos sinking in Miami, New Orleans flooding going to look like child's play. hell even the air we breathe is gonna go bad on us. we just keep fucking around and it's time to find out. that's if we don't blow ourselves up with a nuke or gen up a super virus that kills us all because our hubris made us think that virus was only gonna kill some of us. drones over bases is child play. this shits gonna get real.

Beat clemson, fuck ou.

Are we gonna talk about the first confirmed severe case in the US?  Copy these pages, as they will probably be deleted later in January.

CDC Confirms First Severe Case of H5N1 Bird Flu in the United States | CDC Newsroom

Thankfully and surprisingly, it wasn't in Texas, it was in *checks notes* Louisiana.

Bryan Cranston Reaction GIF

Quote

December 18, 2024-- A patient has been hospitalized with a severe case of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus ("H5N1 bird flu") infection in Louisiana. This marks the first instance of severe illness linked to the virus in the United States. The case was confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday, December 13. Since April 2024, there have been a total of 61 reported human cases of H5 bird flu reported in the United States.

Quote

Partial viral genome data of the H5N1 avian influenza virus that infected the patient in Louisiana indicates that the virus belongs to the D1.1 genotype related to other D1.1 viruses recently detected in wild birds and poultry in the United States and in recent human cases in British Columbia, Canada, and Washington state. This H5N1 bird flu genotype is different than the B3.13 genotype detected in dairy cows, sporadic human cases in multiple states, and some poultry outbreaks in the United States. Additional genomic sequencing and efforts to isolate virus from clinical specimens from the patient in Louisiana are underway at CDC.

The best way to prevent H5 bird flu is to avoid exposure whenever possible. Infected birds shed avian influenza A viruses in their saliva, mucous, and feces. Other infected animals may shed avian influenza A viruses in respiratory secretions and other bodily fluids (e.g., in unpasteurized cow milk or 'raw milk').

  • As a general precaution, whenever possible, people should avoid contact with sick or dead animals, in particular wild birds, and poultry.
  • For individuals with direct/close contact with wild birds or sick or dead poultry or other animals, wear recommended personal protective equipment (PPE). Wild birds can be infected with avian influenza A viruses even if they don't look sick.
  • Do not touch surfaces or materials (e.g., animal litter or bedding material) contaminated with saliva, mucous, or animal feces from wild or domestic birds or other animals with confirmed or suspected avian influenza A virus infection.

For more information on H5 bird flu in the U.S. and CDC's response, including regularly updated case counts, visit the H5 Bird Flu: Current Situation page.

Honestly seems like we should be able to avoid this one unless it starts hopping from person to person. I guess that’s the fear - that it will adapt and be able to do that.

A ha!  Russians.  "mucous" is the adjective, "mucus" is the noun.  All is well!

Well, maybe it was God punishing humans, or bad air, but their was speculation that this thing called the bubonic plague might have not started in bio-labs.

Pretty sure my wife has the flu, for the first time in 20+ years.  Achy all over, to the point that she has a hard time sleeping.  She just feels all-over shitty, and has for two full days now.  And she rarely gets sick (only member of our house never to have COVID -- tested, and negative this round as well).  Forgot how much the plain old flu sucks.

Oh well, I guess that's what we get for filling our house with live poultry, drinking only raw milk, and having a doorknob-licking party.

It's a fine balance when trying to make a roux. You don't want to use too much heat and burn it, but you also need to make sure it's at a high enough temperature to kill the germs from the bird.

Redditors are reporting egg rationing at California supermarkets.

Also domesticated cats are apparently readily catching H5N1. I have to wonder if the fact that damned near everyone owns some kind of mammalian pet these days increases the risk of crossover to humans, and eventual H2H transmission. The vast majority of Americans willingly allow potential animal vectors to wander around their homes, chewing on furniture and snuggling up to their families. If this gets loose in cats or god forbid dogs, it’s gonna be a clusterfuck.

Honestly the first thing I thought while reading the latest on this thing was "Goddamnit, my cat brings 3 dead birds a week to our porch".

1. They can test for the flu and give her something to reduce the longevity of symptoms if she get diagnosed early enough.

2. The honest-to-God flu is no joke.  If your wife has it I hope she feels better soon.  It kills tens of thousands every year, albeit not typically non-elderly healthy adults. But many of those it doesn't kill feel like death.  I roll my eyes when people say "I had the flu" when they felt crappy for a couple of days.  MFer you had a cold.  It happens. I think my sister gets "the flu" twice a year.

I’ve gotten the actual flu, like, influenza, a couple times in middle life, and it’s God awful. Never any GI issues, but the fever and body aches that I feel deep to my spinal cord were miserable, lasting 3-4 days. No appetite whatsoever.

Hope she gets on the mend by next so she feels better for Christmas.

This.  Nobody gets colds anymore.  It’s always the flu.

Per a quick google, once humans get bird flu it can be trasmitted via droplets in the air, so, yeah.

Yeah, definitely too late for Tamiflu. This has legit kicked her ass. Last time she had the flu was over 20 years ago. Yesterday, the fever and puking hit. But, that was the worst, as she got some rest last night, and can now eat some crackers and Gatorade. The plan is more rest and fluids today.
She’s sleeping in the guest bedroom, I’m taking all the Emergen-C I can.
And yes, the flu is the flu, not a cold.

Did she try shots of bleach? You know I am kidding.

Fluid, rest, being left the fuck alone (she lives with you, that alone might help her recover.)

Last time I nursed someone coming back from the flu started making them shots of fresh OJ and honey once their stomach could handle it.

I know we make fun of it, but man, cook up a simple chicken soup and start with broth. And yes, saltines, though I prefer Saltatidas. And decaf tea.

And get rid of the damn birds of Christmas you got her and are hidden in the closet. That is how bird flu infiltrates.
