Might as well have a thread to consolidate recruiting information and I didn't see one. Helps to not have recruiting information lost in a season thread as well.

Blake Munroe - Aaliyah Chavez

  Quote

Spoke with some sources regarding Lubbock Monterey’s Aaliyah Chavez and where things stand on National Signing Day.

Don’t be surprised if Chavez, the nation’s No. 1 player for 2025, doesn’t sign today. I’m not saying she won’t for sure, but it very well may not happen and it wouldn’t shock the schools below if that were the case.

Here’s the rundown on what I’m hearing on the schools in the running as of mid-morning.

Texas: Feels great about their chances. Basically just waiting on a decision at this point. They’ve done everything right and have been thought to be the leader for awhile.

Texas Tech: Chavez just wrapped up an OV there and it went well. They’re pushing the whole “hometown hero” scenario to her. The ADIDAS affiliation looms large, however, as Chavez is a Nike kid.

Oklahoma: One of the schools that has been quietly making progress in this recruitment. Some schools on this list wouldn’t be shocked if it ended up being OU.

UCLA: She enjoyed her time out west, but those in the know would be surprised if the Bruins were the pick unless there’s a very large NIL push at the last moment.

LSU: The general consensus is that the Tigers have signed too many players. They seem to be out of it.

I’ve said before I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s OU. She can just shoot the ball and not worry about playing defense under Jennie. That intrigues a lot of score first players

Yeah. Playground basketball, or get coached hard every minute.  Very stark difference.  And tech is totally different than those two, with the hometown hero and having to save the coach’s job.

hope she has a decent idea of who she is and what she wants. I’m sure the money will be the most consistent thing across the three.

Yep, her playing time at Texas will be dictated by her ability to be coached hard by Vic and also how hard she plays defense.  Jennie will be like "fuck it, just shoot it and whatever, I don't care if you defend anyone or not, let's win every game 97-93"

Meanwhile, Gerlich is like

Sources: Gerlich is beside herself. Driving around downtown Lubbock begging (thru texts) Chavez's family for address to Aaliyah's home

Lucky for her, nobody is willing to schlep to Lubbock to put a chair in front of the door…

I’m anxious to see which school she chooses. She has until the 20th, no? I’ll likely post some thoughts once she is signed.

Next year's team will be our best shot at a title if Chavez does pick us.

Harmon, Booker, and Chavez together would be crazy. Potentially 3 first-team caliber All-Americans together.

Getlich offered Chavez’s 7th grade sister. Lol if Chavez picks OU or Texas, that offer is getting yanked 5 minutes later

Was her first OV (I think?) and she took an UOV there a couple weeks ago.  KU has done well to keep talent at home (S’Mya Nichols was a top-35 prospect who stayed home)

if we got the dream class this year, we are looking at a future roster that features:

Bryanna Preston (HG #38)
Aaliyah Chavez (HG #1)
Jordan Lee (HG #9)
Madison Booker (HG #12)
Aaliyah Crump (HG #5)
Jaliya Davis (HG #17)
Justice Carlton (HG #9)

Plus 3 more on the roster next year:

Rori Harmon for another year (HG #10)
Aaliyah Moore for another year, most likely, she should be medical RS eligible for 2022-23 when she only played 9 games (HG #6)
Kayla Oldacre for another year (HG #25)

Texas could, theoretically, have 10 players who were top 40 in their class in the HoopGurlz ranking.  Will they all stay? Who knows.  Will we sign Crump, Davis and Chavez? Probably not, but 2/3 would be awesome.

Texas' big need next year is another post player.

Either we aren't really pushing for Davis or they don't think Moore is getting another year because the numbers don't make sense.

Booker (will play the 4 in the 3 guard lineups), then Moore, then Davis, and then Carlton. Some of those players can play different positions but their best fit is really at the 4.

I can't see 4 players of that caliber battling it out for 1 position.

Unless she doesn't want one or wants to move on (to real life, pro or, like several other players in the past, to play a 5th year somewhere else), she is eligible - she only played 9 of our 36 games that season (25%), well below the threshold for a medical RS (30%).

Hell, Rori got approved for one last year and she played 12/38 games (31.6%)

This one didn't make much sense to me if Moore is likely returning.

Crump and Davis are both small forwards. Which is basically what Booker is for us as well.  Didn't make sense to take 2 of them to sit behind Booker.

PG: Harmon, Preston
SG: Chavez (?), Lee
SF: Booker, Crump
PF: Moore, Carlton
P: Oldacre

That's not even including the tall guards of Codio and Jak who can play that guard forward role, like Booker and likely Crump.

I believe we have 12 on scholly for next year with Jones, Holle and Phelia leaving + Crump coming in.  Texas is obviously saving 1 spot for Chavez and then can go post hunting with the extra ones. (Currently including Graves in that count, since we are under the 15)

If it was Tech, she would have signed with them already.  No point in waiting

I think it is a Texas-OU battle

Wonder if this is a basketball decision or a bidding war?

It's a one year deal I assume, wherever she goes she will still be the top pick in the WNBA draft.

Does she want a championship? Is she looking for the best fit?

The #1 overall pick still makes under $100K salary their rookie year and I believe Caitlin Clark (arguably the GOAT of WCB) only made a $70K salary last season in the WNBA. There’s a reason one-and-dones are rare in WCB and even the best players stay to get their degree. If playing for Texas gets her more NIL and brand deal money than playing for the Dallas Wings, then she probably stays at Texas or whatever school she signs with for 3-4 years. Hopefully it’s Texas

No, you cannot one and done for WCBB.  22 or have to have graduated college within 3 months of the draft

No, the early signing period was Nov 13-20, when Crump signed.  Now AC has to wait to sign until the regular April 16 - May 21 period.

But she can announce anytime she wishes.

Tick tock, girlfriend. Still would say it is a Texas/Texas Tech battle, with OU a possibility still due to proximity and style of play, but feels like there's been less talk of OU lately.

Girl, Tech is 14-8 and missing the tournament again with their NET of 81.  0-5 versus Q1 teams (1-6 versus Q1/Q2).  Gerlich is a goner, the Big 12 sucks butt, come play for Vic.

My main concern is playing time - if she expects to play right away, she's coming in with Lee and Phelia at SG and Harmon and Preston at PG.

I think there's going to be some concern from her camp about where she plays and how much - Harmon and Phelia both potentially returning creates some depth chart issues for her. I would think the plan was originally that Harmon would be gone after this year and Phelia would have used up her one final season, but injuries makes it possible both return in 2025-2026.

Crump looks like a Booker backup at SF, so what you end up with looks a little like:

PG: Harmon/Preston
SG: Lee/Phelia/Chavez
SF: Booker/Crump
PF: Carlton/?? (Jak?)
P: Oldacre/??

Jones, Holle and Moore are the only for-sure departures.  That puts the roster, with Crump coming in, at 12 (assuming Graves is on scholarship because we have extra).  Chavez makes 12 and then you have room for a PF and a post to get you to 15.

Looking at OU, they lose 3 at the guard spot (Tot, Keys, Joens) and bring back Verhulst and bring in Lofton (HG #50) at the guard position.  They need AC badly.

Ah I guess she is eligible if she wants it.  But Texas hasn't announced her medical shirt in the same way they announced Rori's - she got a whole post just about her redshirt (https://texaslonghorns.com/news/2024/8/29/womens-basketball-ncaa-approves-medical-hardship-waiver-for-rori-harmon.aspx) being approved.

Technically, every guard on the roster could be back next year and we add a top 5 recruit. Either somebody isn't returning that we think is or Chavez isn't happening.

I'm starting to wonder if we are going to throw our NIL at a legit big in the portal for next year's roster.

Yeah, there's a logjam at PG/SG if Phelia is taking a RS and coming back and Harmon is coming back - she has not confirmed that yet, it's an end-of-season decision for her.

Posted

I mean, who’s to say Phelia’s eye issues will improve next season? Sounds like it’s a recurring issue from a surgery long ago. We still need to try to land Chavez at all costs, or we may end up in a situation where Harmon needs to play 40 mins/game next season again.
