Oh I totally agree.

I think Tech is going to swing for the fences with money + potentially a new coach.  I think that uncertainty + what Texas offers long-term (the alumni base, the brand, Nike, etc.) + what Texas offers in the short term (better roster, coaching stability, winning program) is going to be what wins out.

Plus Texas will sell her on playing on national TV often (ESPN/ABC/SECN) versus.... CBS Sports Network and ESPN+

I'm just going to laugh as Tech tries to hire a coach in a 2.5 week timeline right as most candidates are starting their NCAA tournament prep.

in before they hire her HS coach! lol

The question is, does Tech WBB have a former player that is married to someone rich + is Sonny Chavez a helicopter dad looking for a payday?

I'm pretty sure I read Sonny is a Texas fan, or was growing up.  Canady's dad was just looking for a payday for Nijaree and not much else.

Hm, let's see, she can sign autographs for the dozens of people in the stands at Tech (avg attendance 4700) or Moody (6600, and for big games, 10k+)

A whopping 4600 for their game against a ranked Baylor team, 5400 for TCU, 4200 for WV

Blake said she does this at every game...will setup in the concession stand and meet fans and sign autographs. He said the line lasted quite a while.

Holy Crap. That's awesome.

I can imagine CDC seeing that and just drooling.

At this point, Tech might be willing to break its Adidas contract, hire the Monterey coaching staff, make Sonny Chavez GM and give scholarships to all four of Aaliyah's fellow starters.

You guys are doing a ridiculous amount of handwringing about this. As corporate NIL grows veins into the Texas athletics department, and that's happening for sure, fearing the unhinged offer will become more and more pointless. The Canady scenario is not the norm, even for Tech.

Barring lunatic-level shit out of nowhere, Texas is sitting pretty. And if there were going to be lunatic-level shit, we'd be hearing about it already.

I've been more concerned about Chavez picking OU than Tech. A better and more stable program historically (and for sure recently), plus a fast-paced style and Nike alignment, as @Js1 has noted. And presumably the truck stop sugar momma of OU softball could offer her however much the school wants her to write a check for, if it comes down to that.

Even so, I'm leaning hard toward Texas. Rarely has a contending team that checks every box for a player been in such clear need of that same player's individual skill set. Now excuse me while I go trademark ArchAaliyahmania.

I had lunatic-level shit out of nowhere after eating at the McDonalds in Commerce after the 3A-Region II Track Meet.

Coincidentally, I forgot underwear that same meet and coach had to take me to Wal Mart to get some and everyone on the bus wondered why we were stopping at Wal Mart and why I was the only one allowed off.

On Tuesday night, five-star combo guard Aaliyah Chavez led No. 5 Lubbock Monterey to a 60-57 victory over No. 6 Frisco Memorial in the Class 5A Division II semifinals.

Now it’s on to San Antonio for a chance to win it all.

“I’m so proud of this team,” Chavez told OTF after her 20-point performance. “I was very emotional after we won. We are like sisters. We’ve put in the work, and now we get to go to state.”

While this weekend’s games will mark the end of basketball for many players, it’s just the beginning for the nation’s No. 1 prospect.

Chavez has been courted by nearly every school in the country. Her offer list reads like a “who’s who” of collegiate sports. She has taken numerous unofficial visits, a handful of official visits, and met countless coaches while hearing nearly every recruiting pitch imaginable.

But time is running out.

“I’ve narrowed it down,” Chavez said. “Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, South Carolina and UCLA. Those are my final schools, and I’m deciding between them."

Chavez has developed a close relationship with Texas Women’s Basketball Head Coach Vic Schaefer and his staff. In late September, she took an official visit to the Forty Acres.

“They’re just a great program and I have a great relationship with the coaches,” she said.

Schaefer attended Chavez's quarterfinal matchup against Argyle last Friday.

“We couldn’t talk, but just seeing him there—knowing he came out to support me—means a lot,” she said.

Now Schaefer and his staff, along with the other finalists, must wait. However, the wait won’t be long.

“She will announce her decision on March 25,” said her father, Sonny Chavez. “That is when everyone will find out.”

Yesterday On Texas Football broke the news that the nation’s No. 1 player overall for 2025, combo guard Aaliyah Chavez, would make her decision on March 25. She also spoke with OTF exclusively to break down her recruitment and to discuss the Longhorns.

You can find those stories here:

State Bound Aaliyah Chavez Talks Texas
Announcement Date Set For Five-Star Aaliyah Chavez

But what are folks saying behind the scenes of this recruitment? I checked in with multiple sources over the last two days to get the latest.

On Her Top Schools:
“She’s not going far from home. She took an official to UCLA, but she hasn’t visited South Carolina. Read into that how you will, but she’ll stay within a few hours of home.”

“It’s going to be Texas or Texas Tech. Oklahoma has a shot due to their head coach, but it’s going to be one of those two.”

“I’d be shocked if she left the state.”

Regarding Texas:
“There’s a level of familiarity and comfortableness with Texas. She likes Vic (Schaefer). She had a great time in Austin.”

“Winners want to be with winners. She’s not oblivious to the fact that Texas is winning.”

“Texas has surged with her over the last few months. They have to like where they’re currently standing.”

The Factors In Her Recruitment:
“People think this is about NIL. It’s not just about NIL. Her family is savvy regarding her popularity and knows she has a chance to be a superstar. They’re looking at the big picture, not just immediate NIL money.”

“The whole Nike vs Adidas thing is definitely something being considered.”

“Location, fan base, opportunities off the court and on it… that’s all playing a role.”

That screams Texas.  And that she spoke to OTF.

Also if she was going to Tech, I still don't see why she'd wait another month.  Her HS playoffs end on Saturday.

Great, why not 4 years then?  Vic will be there until you leave

Lapping the in-state schools the last 4 years under Vic.  Acclimating better to the SEC than Jennie

Stardom in Austin >>> Stardom in Lubbock.  Be on nationally televised games against big name opponents almost every week.  Be the headlining star of the NCAAT for years to come.  Have the chance to play against the best of the best every week and showcase yourself.

Get fucked, you shit ass Adidas school

Canadian phenom Agot Makeer makes her commitment announcement tomorrow. We aren’t in the running, but after she announces, Chavez will be the only top 100 player for the 2025 recruiting class still uncommitted. Literally saving the best for last.

Guess who got named Gatorade NPOY?

(Duh, it's AC)

OU and Texas are both hosting sub-regionals this weekend, along with South Carolina and UCLA.  I'm sure people will be on the lookout to see if she is present at any of them.

(Tech is going to Wyoming for the CBIT or whatever 3rd best postseason tournament is called)

Man I hope its us

Don't like her last minute trip to Norman for their NCAA opener.  She's not at Texas today.... is she staying in Norman for their 2nd round game today or did they just hop over for one game?

According to the internet it’s 30 miles and 30 minutes closer.  By plane it’s basically the same.  Not sure that distance is any kind of factor.

I said a long time a go, I would not be surprised.

Tre Young involved in her recruitment ($$) + the offense.

I hope OU loses today to really make her sweat her choice, because I don't think they are ever getting a championship with Jennie.

If  she wants to become a better all-around player, Texas is the better choice, but maybe she just wants to jack up 15 threes a game and play minimal defense.

her brand is scoring.. so if given the keys, it's probably a win for them if she can continue her scoring barrage

but yes I agree, think Vic would make her the better overall player WHILE her skills would make Vic adapt to her style a bit.

I do like to remind people that while he hasn’t had an offensive player of her caliber at Texas, besides maybe Booker, who can take any shot she wants, he had 2 players at MSU who were volume 3 point scorers. And one of them is on staff

Well nothing like ceding absolute control over to one player.

Rumors are swirling that five-star combo guard Aaliyah Chavez (Lubbock Monterey) will take in the Texas WBB game later today at 1:00 PM. I can confirm, however, that this is NOT true.

Chavez made the five-hour trek to Norman over the weekend to squeeze in one last visit to Oklahoma and I've been told that it went very well for the Sooners. Again, they're selling her on their offense and the fact that it's a great fit for her.

Chavez will make her decision tomorrow afternoon at Monterey High School. That decision will be televised on ESPN. While an official time has yet to be announced, I would expect it to happen at either 1:00 or 2:00 PM central.

The announcement is closed and no media is allowed in there.

At this time, I expect Texas and Oklahoma as the only two schools to be in consideration, as Texas Tech seems to be out of it. Obviously things can change at the drop of a hat when it comes to recruiting.

Posted

Why is Trae Young a part of the Sooner's pitch but KD is not a part of our pitch?  And sorry but if I was a recruit and a team told me that I could have control of the offense it would come off as desperate instead of a plus.  Your potential coach should not be giving up that kind of control just to get you on campus.

Shite.

Massive coitus interruptus to start an important day for us.

I would love to have AC, but you pretty much are creating the team around her talents. I’ve wondered how other players would react to not having as big a role due to the team focus being on her.

Still very disappointed if true.

I heard Tech was basically offering Chavez to hand select the next coaching staff. Monetarily we can match whatever Tech and OU are offering, but Texas isn’t going to hand the keys of the program over to an 18 year old. If that’s the type of control Chavez is looking for, then she won’t be signing with Texas

A generational player didn’t bring Iowa a title. Vic’s program as it stands is already built for and is competing in the SEC.

She could be the missing piece but I think Vic knows his program isn’t going to suddenly stop being in contention because AC went elsewhere. Jennie hasn’t shown she can do the same

IMO Iowa didn't have the team around Clark to win it all, Clark carried them to what they were. We have a much better team where a play like Chavez is the missing piece that could be used to break through and win a title. She along with Krump are shooters that Vic really needs especially when facing strong downlow teams like South Carolina. It will force court spacing because they'll have to guard perimeter more.

I agree

The question to AC is - do you want to be the missing piece or do you want to be the centerpiece?

If all you care about is the team being built around you and suited to your needs and everyone has to defer to you, she'd never work at Texas.  Vic requires a lot of selflessness to be a part of this program - see the reasons why someone like Kyndall Hunter or Matharu didn't last.

Not sure you'd find better examples of TEAMmates than Rori, Booker, Holle, our bigs, Moore and past players like Warren, JAT, Lambert, Ebo Shaylee.
