Lovely pics.  I have been feeding birds onu back porch for years. When it's chilly I have plenty. This afternoon we had 7 male and female cardinals out there.  Just lovely to see.

Some people believe a cardinal's presence symbolizes a deceased loved one that is coming to check up on you.  I like to believe that.

The Allegheny River, about 25 miles northeast of The Point, just up river a bit from Leechburg. The ice isn’t too think, about 5” or 6”.   We threw some rocks out and no ice was broken. Pretty cool, no pun intended.

☝️

It's about 400 yards across at that point. It's a pretty good river. We swim there a lot. There are beavers, eagles, bear and a bunch of other wild animals as well as a ton of fish in the water. It's very clean.

It’s not so bad. The big difference in winter is more when it goes from 32F to 2F. That’s a big difference. Momma always said cover the head, cover the chest and have good shoes/boots during winter. If you take care of those things the winter isn’t so awful. But yeah, that’s a lot of ice. Even what looks like water is clear ice.

70 years ago in St. Louis I was walking alone across the ice surface of a frozen swamp pond located in a wooded sinkhole area about a half mile from our home at Jefferson Barracks.
One leg broke through up to my crotch, but luckily I was able to extricate myself out quickly and ran home. Leg was damn near frozen with slimy crap, and Mom chewed me out pretty good for being stupid.
Just remembering that incident still makes me shrivel up.

Eagles are so awesome. When I was a kid, even up until about 20 years ago, there were never any eagles around Pittsburgh. Now, they are pretty much all over. We've always had falcons and hawks but, not eagles. There are some nest-cams around. Across the river from Oakmont some eagles live up on the hillside where no people can ever get. Up on our river, the Allegheny, there are plenty. When you go by on a late afternoon cruise on the boat it is so cool to see them, especially when the baby eagles are hatched, just hanging out, watching everything.
