A lot of you suggesting a private car/Uber Black/Hotel are assuming this guy wants to spend more than a few dollars in gas driving his wife.

Not everyone is Surly 1%.

This is true. Alternatively, he could simply drive his wife and go watch at a number of the nearby joints. @horn4life, get yourself some Terry Black’s or something else good if you want simplicity and a treat.

I’m actually getting married Thanksgiving weekend, so this hits close to home. But unlike OP we purposefully scheduled it this way (we traditionally host Thanksgiving for family here in Port A so nobody had to re-arrange their schedule), the wedding itself is family only, we are having a wedding party for friends a different weekend in December so we don’t inconvenience friends, we did not have a wedding shower because it’s fucking stupid, and my future wife is cool and knows what’s up and scheduled all of Saturday for game watching (the wedding is on Friday).

So you're going to schedule your celebration with friends and family during our playoff run? WTF MAN!

Thanks for the invite, I thought we were brothers! (Sarcasm and congrats!)

I know right? But that can be a game watching party too.

I’d start by asking your wife why she is so intent on you being down on Rainey Street on Saturday evening? Sounds suspicious. Hope you can swim better than the others could.

And also, Uber is the answer here. Not even Uber black.  Issues like this really should’ve been settled 38 years ago. My girlfriend knows that I would bend over backwards and move mountains to help her out with the important things in life. But there is no fucking way she would ever tell me she’s too good for Uber and expect me to miss a game for some high maintenance bullshit.

This is like the people that ask for a ride to the airport. What?  $25.00 a day is some sort of insurmountable thing?  And failing that Uber stopped working?
if you have enough money to get on an airplane you have enough money to not involve me in that nonsense. It blows my mind how many people think that asking for a ride to/from the airport is ok. As a society we should throw rocks at them until this custom stops.

Well shit.  My wife is invited to a shower on game day. That starts at 3 fucking o'clock!!!!  I assume they (sort of like me) thought the game was going to be on Friday.  The kicker is the damn shower is at The Bowie on Rainey, and apparently there is no parking?!?!?!

So the wife want's me to drop her off, and pick her up.  I of course will adapt and overcome.  But what do you guys think the odds of the 2:30 kick vs the 7 pm kick?  I can say fuck it, you find parking. I guess alternatively... where the hell should I watch the game if I am playing chauffeur downtown if it's an early kick....

dude wtf... they have these things called uber and lyft nowadays.

aggy has apparently been testing out a drone light show this week (a totally original idea they thought up themselves!), so they're clearly banking on a night game.

Oh, it will absolutely be a day game then.  Perfect.  Make it an 11 AM kickoff so there's no way for them to use it save for their Aggy Jugend rally the night before.

do they not have Uber/Lyft where you live? Tell wife to take a rideshare to/from.

or just start drinking heavily for early games and be too drunk to drive her.

An older friend tells this great wedding vs. Longhorn football story: A good friend of his was getting married at four o’clock on December 6th, 1969. Yeah, then. The Game started at 12:30 and we all know what happened in the fourth quarter. My friend wasn’t going to miss the end of that game, wedding or no wedding, so he waits ’til the last possible moment to leave, then breaks all speed records getting to the University Methodist Church on The Drag. He goes in and sits on the back row, barely before the bride and her father start down the aisle. He doesn’t recognize the bride, but he doesn’t know her anyway, so he doesn’t worry. Then, the groom and groomsmen come out and . . . he doesn’t know them from Adam’s off ox. He’s in the wrong wedding. Obviously. Well, he's pissed but he can’t just get up and walk out, so he grudgingly sits through the ceremony. It’s finally over and since he’s on the back row, he’s one of the first to greet the newlyweds. He takes the bride’s hand, kisses it, and whispers, just loud enough for the husband to hear, “I can’t believe you did this to me,” and walks out. He calls his wife from a payphone and finds out that the wedding was at the University Christian Church. It’s over when he gets there, of course, but the reception’s still going on. Barely. He tells his friend and new wife what a beautiful wedding it was, then sheds his tie and joins the celebration on The Drag.

True story. We never learned what happened with the Methodist marriage, although it’s been the subject of speculation over drinks for more than 50 years.

Tell your wife that you will do your duty by dropping her off/picking her up but that you will be inviting 20 of your closest Surly friends to watch the game at your house. She'll cancel her plans lickity-split and stay at home.

You are setting yourself up for future anniversary conflict by having a wedding date near an annual rivalry game.  I speak from experience with an anniversary of October 13th.  My wife always wants to travel somewhere for our anniversary and it often complicates watching TX/OU.  Watched last year from a cruise ship somewhere off the coast of Albania.

Just go 0-7 in conference play, your weekends open up pretty good when that happens 😢

What is it about Texas and breaking teams when we win the CCG?

2023: Oklahoma State
2009: Nebraska
2005: Colorado

The only one we didn't break by winning the CCG was 1996 Nebraska but we did cock block them and basically hand the title to Spurrier & Danny Wuerffel by letting them rematch against FSU.

I don’t give a shit if you’ve known the broad for 38 hours or 38 decades. If she’s too good for black car service, she’s a nightmare for life. If she likes black car service, get a grip and use Uber Black and it will be a far better treat for her than your old ass doddering around Rainey Street trying to locate her before Nicole disappears you for good.

well yeah but once she goes Uber Black she'll never go back

I realize where I am and know I'm about to get flack for this, but this opinion is dumb. In a lot of places, spring and fall are about the only time it makes sense to get married. If it's a popular venue, you're taking one of the first open Saturdays you see.

If your friends don't suck, it's going to be a good time. So, sorry people that you enjoy spending time with want to ply you with free alcohol and good food--and all you have to do is listen to a cringey story or two--at the expense of possibly missing one of the 13+ games that occur every single year.

It's just football.

Here’s a comprise. You and her take an Uber to Rainey, drop her off at said venue. Go walk to a sports bar or Uber to Lavaca St bar to watch game. Pick her up after game. Beware of Nicole. Score!

Keep seeing references to Nicole but apparently missed the back story. What happened? Did Nicole turn out to be an axe murderer for?

I have a different suggestion SIAP, get a room at the Fairmont Austin pre game at the hotel and then walk over to Rainey Street and then go sit down at a bar and enjoy the game and the view of young women. Have her walk over when she is done and join you for the game. After the win walk back to the Fairmont and get some.

I think I would rather say yes to one of the very few favors my wife of 38 years asks of me.  Of course I am not a panicky type... 😉. And, I fucking like her company more than that of others.  But thanks for the McCauley Caulkin point of view...

I'm a younger guy and way less into the whole "I hate my wife" bit that older generations, so I get where you're coming from and admire your perspective; but, I mean, this is a two way street. It's not a crazy ask of you to want to watch the Texas-A&M game without unneeded, somewhat frivolous interruption. Honestly the whole fall wedding backlash is overblown and only a handful of Texas games are appointment TV in a given season. This is one of them though. If this were Kentucky or Vanderbilt or ULM or some shit then who cares, but it isn't. And we're talking about a shower, not an actual wedding.

Uber is the obvious solution here.

This is the right answer in general. Texas-OU is the only weekend that's iffy for me, and that really only applies if the couple and social circle are UT alums/invested in the game. You should probably know better with that one. But if someone unaffiliated with UT or uninterested in UT football has a wedding then, I'm not going to get all butthurt about it; I may not go if it's not a close relationship, but I don't think that's a big deal either way.

Hotel Van Zandt is literally ON Rainey St.  and look at that, you can either reserve Saturday and if needed Friday night with the spa Suite for $370+ tax a night.

I would just pick Saturday, drop her ass off at whatever Rainey bar is happening at 2p. park in the Van Zandt garage, and see if you can check in early. if not fucking sit at the bar until 3 and then check in.

she would literally have to walk less than 2 blocks as long as Nichole doesnt get to her first.

You just took this poor bastard from a little drive downtown to drop off his wife to blowing $400 on a hotel room.

Either sign up for a month to a streaming TV service and watch it on your phone/tablet, or drop her off and find a sports bar. Easy enough.

I've watched several games in my car on my tablet while waiting for the wife. It's easy to do these days.
