What a weird game. They got abused on the boards in the first half. Joe had tons of layups and dunks. I’m not sure Texas ever really looked good until the last few minutes. Weird.

We played our best basketball with 5 minutes left. We need 40 minutes of that effort instead of 5...

I’m tired and can’t think … who was the last pure scoring guard with tre’s level of confidence and talent, that guard you give the ball to at the end of the game and know you’re gonna get a decent look. Kids got a lot to learn but damn he’s super talented.

"With Tre's level of talent" gives you a list of zero.

Carr was a killer a couple of years ago but he was little and like 23 by that point.

KD wasn't a guard.

Hamilton was a really good scorer his last season but not sure he was a guard?

pm Derka (unironically)

I mean shit - Abmas was pretty fucking badass last season but he was even smaller than Carr.

It's easier for Tre to get separation at 6'6"

It's a weird roster that is going to need time to figure things out. The coaching staff is also going to need time to figure things out.

Terry pretty much nailed the lineups all 2nd half. Which is impressive for a guy that wouldn't be able to coach at the AAU level. /s

Tip of the cap to Weaver. Getting 2 fouls early was a blessing in disguise.

running circles (literally) around st Joe’s in the 2nd half who didn’t have the stamina to finish another 40 minutes for a 2nd night in a row

Weaver’s efforts are well known and chronicled…..yet, he still exceeds all of that. Amazing.

I'm not sure where Pope fits in with this roster.

Larry is a far better distributor and defender. Then I don't see how you give Pope minutes over Johnson, Mark, and Weaver at the other guard spots. Playing Larry and Pope together also makes us really small at the guard spot.

I wouldn’t mind a weaver cam. Just watch him for a half.

Chances are there is very little of the action you’re going to miss

Pope is 6’2 and Larry is 6’3. Playing them together at the guard spots doesn’t make us small at all. Last year we were playing two 5’11 dudes.

There is no shot they are that size.

This is like them listing Abmas at 6'0 last year.

It's funny, during preseason a pretty common perspective was that Weaver's minutes needed to be cut to 8-10 minutes per game (or so).  Now, once people see him again, it's KEEP HIM ON THE FLOOR.

Some guys are hard to judge on statistics alone.  He is absolutely a caloric boost for this team.

Fair but regardless both of these guys are 2-3 inches taller than our guys last year.

Johnson and Larry might be clutch type dudes down the stretch.

Shedrick is finesse, but teams can't exploit him on the PnR switch up top. His finesse nature gives him the advantage in that situation, and it was really helpful at the end of the game.

Height isn't everything. Abmas played small and Hunter plays a bit bigger than he is but he's 6'0".

The lineup he's describing is absolutely "bigger" than Abmas and Hunter - but I might not call it a "big" backcourt lol.

He just needs to get better at reading when to go for a block, twice in today's game he was the 2nd defender on a block attempt and left a wide open rim for an easy rebound and score.

I think he needs to fucking apply himself and bring energy and focus throughout the game. I didn't see that until the last 10 minutes. I saw him floating around indecisively and getting punked on both ends of the floor.

He isn't a mechanically flawed basketball player on either end. He isn't a good rebounder for his size but his defensive skill-set is very much big-time D1 level.

He needs to look up and realize that he's the starting center on what could be a very good basketball team representing the top collegiate brand in the country.

Fuckin lock-in and play with some confidence and go get paid, bro.

Depending on how they're playing defense that could be a weak side rotation issue and not on him. Can't know without knowing what defense they were in and what their help rotations are supposed to be.

A tale of two teams is this bunch, it can be the best of times or the worst of times. Kaluma traveling, missing everything on three balls, forcing strange shots, then making strange shots, burying a clutch three and making clutch free throws at the finish. Johnson forcing tough shots, turning the ball over, but in the clutch making tough shots, making smart plays and just money from the line in winning time. Shedrick making silly fouls, getting lost on defense, missing easy shots, clanking three's that shouldn't be shot. Then he makes good moves down low and finishes, big put backs on missed shots, and playing good defense and erasing shots that could have changed the game. Weaver just please stop with the dumb fouls so you can play when needed. You keep the wheel going round and round for this team when other things break down.

Larry taking over the game for the comeback was a nice development as was some decent minutes from Onyema. Vinson is athletic but he just can't match up with physical teams inside. Need Kent back for his size and help out on the boards and his defense for segments of the game. I don't know if Mark is just not in playing shape yet, but it looks that way. Need his overall game to give this team a lift. Lots of moving parts to try and piece together, to see what this team is capable of.  Hope it comes together by the start of conference play. This is the mission charged to Terry and only time will tell the tale.

I still want to see a lineup of Weaver + Mark + Johnson + Kaluma + Kent

Just switch everything on defense. All those dudes can defend and all can rebound. And all have to be guarded on the 3 point line.

Nah just throw the towel in. We're finishing 13th in the SEC,

I think Kent's wrist has been bothering him since the start of the season.

I know scrimmages aren't everything but I find it wild that we destroyed a team like TCU to then struggle in the opener against Ohio State. In the context of Mark and Kent being injured since that scrimmage, it actually makes a lot of sense. Those 2 were arguably two of our top players in the preseason (based on reports).

We just need to get healthy.

omg, what a coincidence, so did dr.beeper! you must have been teammates with him too!

LOL

also, file rex/beeper posting about how he played with mihm and axtell in the same file that contains “tim and omar are roommates” and “colt and shipley grew up together.” we heard you the first 100 times, nobody cares.

I thought it was the wrist too but when they showed him on the bench last night he was in a boot.

Common? I don't recall that sentiment, but out those fools so we can have them banned from posting in Texas threads. Id play weaver 40 mins a game if possible.

Shed was horrible on his pick and roll defense… he’d flash out and not cover either guy… he needs to run until he pukes for leaving his feet so much at times and being soft on the defensive glass. He flashes some ability but his consistency needs to be a helluva lot better. At this point he basically is only good for about 8-15 mins a game, which won’t cut it versus the non directional Mississippi schools.

Larry is our best point. Weaver’s hustle saved us several points. Johnson is good but needs to calm down with the shot selection.

Kaluma is solid.

We need Mark, pope and Kent to get into their grooves and find a way to contribute more to be a good team.

Somebody needs to coach up Shedrick and onyema about defensive and rebounding fundamentals to clean up the gaping liability we have under the bucket on that end of the court

Love Weaver but I'm not sure he has to be guarded at the 3 point line.  he doesn't need to be at the 3 point line anyway.

Shedrick’s and 1 foul when Texas had finally gotten a margin (7 I believe) was brain-dead. Don’t leave your feet, and if you do then make sure the guy doesn’t make the shot.  And no, putting your head in your hands right afterwards does not help.

eta: don’t remember the time, but Texas seemed to get that margin and keep the lead for good after joes missed a wide open corner 3 when we didn’t rotate.  Felt like it killed the offensive momentum they had been building.

Yeah, Shedrick is horrible on the perimeter defensively.

Crazy to say but think Onyema needs to steal some of his minutes. Onyema isn't good but he can at least move on the perimeter.

He shot 40% from 3 as a FR at UTA. This year so far he is shooting 50% from 3 (admittedly on low volume). If he is open out there he can drain it.

he has good shooting form and he doesn’t take stupid shots. you can’t just leave him along out there in space to either shoot or drive, so he’s got to be accounted for.
