Does steam cleaning carpet cause mold?

Dumb question amnesty, please.

I just moved into a new place with carpet upstairs (commence with shaved downstairs jokes).

If I steam clean with a rental from Home Depot or some such place, am I running the risk of growing mold under the carpet?  My understanding is that it takes at least 12 hours and maybe 24 for mold to begin.  It's very difficult to tell from the internet how long I should expect the carpet to stay damp, so...?

You will not "steam clean" from a rental machine.  You will spray a lukewarm water solution on your carpet, and you will extract some of that water.

Listen to this man. Store rental machines are wet-vac carpet cleaners, not steam cleaners. Big difference.
