Saw it with the family and enjoyed it.  My theater kids and wife loved it.   It has a 2:40 runtime and didn't fee like it at all.

I checked my phone twice for the time.

It was solid. The singing was excessive, and I felt it could have been much better executed by restricting the singing to major plot points instead of every minor plot change. That could have cut the run time by about 30 minutes and made it a more enjoyable watch.

They were not shy with the political allegory, way more apparent that the original wizard of Oz. The animals representing migrants and minorities, the Asian Sorcery fascism enabler representing Trump, fox news, and Republicans, and the wizard representing Zuckerberg, Musk, Bezos, Koch's, Thiel, etc.

Buddy, the novel was originally written in 1995 and the musical was adapted from that novel in the late end of the 90s. I would say at the time it was released in 2003, it was more about the after effects of 9/11 and the buildup to the Iraq War.

Spoiler

But sure, the themes are pretty universal about demagoguery and people needing an enemy.

I’ve raised two theater kids which means I’ve seen this musical way too many times and wasn’t overly excited to see the movie. I ended up really enjoying it and my girls haven’t stopped talking about it all week. If you are on the fence - I would recommend seeing it at the theater. Performances are insane. Menzel/Chenoweth cameos were cool. Hopefully there isn’t any audience participation in your theater.

Reading Hermanator’s review - I do wonder what thoughts are from others that are completely unaware of the musical.

Loved, loved, loved it. Wonderful acting and singing from all involved. I saw the musical years ago and had forgotten a lot of who the characters end up being and how they got to be, but it started to come back. Part 2 will really pull it all together with lots of surprises. A year is a long time to wait.

Same. Was awesome. Above my expectations and can’t wait for part 2.

Seent it last night. Overall, enjoyed it very much.  However, there was a very lengthy slow point in the second half which damn near put me to sleep.  The raucous ending made up for it though.

Also, Alamo-Slaughter, get yer shit together.  Can't afford A/C for the whole flick?  Had to lose my hoodie.  I will say that the service was very on top of things, which is unusual for that location.

Just to take this a touch further - the 1995 novel was a follow up to a 1939 movie which itself was adapted from a Broadway play in 1902 and a book from 1900. Even THAT book has been considered by some to be an allegory for political, monetary and social issues if it's time, many which still resonate today.

Watched it again last night with my other kid and the emerald city part was tough to sit through on second watch for sure.

I was able to focus more on the performances this time and man did Ariana Grande kill it. Can’t believe she’s about to marry the Boq actor. Jonathan Bailey made it look easy.

About 40 minutes too long. Hearing the bass next door from Gladiator 2 didn’t really help matters.

Este. I understand the director wanting to be extremely faithful to the stage show, but he is very clearly not a believer in "less is more" and he had no interest in cutting out anything for the sake of the casual moviegoer's experience. Guess I'm in the minority on that, though. Good for them.

I was aware of the musical, and the guy who adapted the novel to a musical even stated in an interview it was no coincidence the President at the time's middle initial was W(icked).

Now the adaptation from a stage play to a movie updated it with very on the nose references to trump, social media oligarchs, and maga. It's over arching themes work for every time period of America, from the original Baum novel critiquing the bimetallism era of William Jennings Bryan, to the musical slamming W. Bush and the neocons burgeoning fascist turn, and now this one as America dives head first into fascism and a totalitarianist future.
