Found these at Walmart for $9.88 (Reg $24.88). At that price they are a great stocking stuffer/emergency gift. Surprisingly great sound with phone app controls. 8+ hours of playtime in each earbud. 24+ hours of extra playtime from the charging case.

Flash and HDD storage are going to be cheap cheap cheap for BF, but the bottom may be further down. If you can get anything for sub $60/TB of flash or $12.50/TB for HDD you should probably buy it.

How does one parse the $500 laptops when one does not really know how specs affect performance?
Buying for kids, previously on chromebooks, and primary use will be school work.  Little to no gaming.

Costco has an HP with 16g memory and 1tb storage for that price, plus their 2 year warranty.   As good as anything?  Wait for Monday deals?

Do you really need/want anything beyond a Chromebook?  If you aren't gaming or doing video/photo editing or something that involves a particular app, I'd just stick with Chromebooks.  No muss, no fuss.  And if they want to turn into budding coders/geeks, can enable Linux and install just about anything Linux offers.

But, for general Windoze, I'd think at least 8GB of RAM and i5 or better, currently 14th gen, so probably back to 11th or 12th is satisfactory.  Probably 256GB minimum disk.  Then there's screen res, touch screen, backlit keyboard.
