Things Lil’ Brothers Do

We both had games against our little brothers yesterday, and as I was watching the repeated horns down hand signals, and thinking about those assholes swaying back-and-forth while singing about sawing the horns off the old Texas mascot, I thought about what a true self-own it is to give your supposed ‘big rival’ special status.

I’m sure you are all familiar with that asshole FSU mascot (fake-Osceola)  riding his horse Renegade to stick the flaming spear in the field prior to the game.  When Florida plays in Tallahassee, and only then, he gets down off his nag and plants the spear.

Allegedly, putting the spear in the ground is getting ready for war - and getting off the horse and planning the spear is actually declaring war.  Those idiots are signifying that we are the only program important enough to warrant a declaration of war.

Neither of those programs are smart enough to figure out that when they single out Texas and Florida in that fashion, they are in reality recognizing that we are their superiors, the programs and universities they most respect and fear.  They are the envious grubby wannabes - jealous lil’ bros, with their oily noses pressed against the dirty windows of their shitty institutions who gaze at us with a mixture of envy, hate and insecurity.

May it forever remain thus…

I’m not saying they aren’t, but what makes FSU the little brother?

My stepdad did undergrad at Florida and grad at Texas.

Florida was always the SEC team I rooted for and when 1996 roll left hooked y'all up with the NC I was fucking stoked.

When the UF fans rolled into Austin in massive numbers last month it warmed my blackened heart.

While I will always pull for Texas if Texas can't win the SEC I will be 100% all in on the Gators.

Pretty sure they have their own identity regardless of who is in their conference. Milkmen, fake army, jizz jars, sawing, etc are pretty damn unique

The Buckman Act in 1905 consolidated the existing schools to create 3 universities in Florida, which made UF the flagship university for White males and was moved to Gainesville.

What would become FSU was a women's college until the 1950s so historically, they have always been way behind UF academically, athletically, and based on state resources.

Gators are ahead in the rivalry and has higher academic rankings.

Who gives a shit about academic rankings for this?

Both teams have 3 NCs and the Seminoles were the team of the 90s with a winning percentage of 89% for the decade.

No one is little brother there. They are more like Texas vs OU.

Aggy has never won a NC in football that matters. Fucking Hitler was invading Poland and football players didn't wear proper helmets with face masks when they last won anything of note.

Not even remotely the same. If they don't want to be little brother they better win 4 NCs. Until then they're little brother.

Completely disagree. Nobody talks about "little brother" type rivalries with universities outside of sports. Nobody has ever said UT is Rice's little brother even though Rice is more highly regarded academically by most.

Academics have nothing to do with it. It's all about football in this sense, and FSU and Florida are equals on the football field.

The in-state little brother complex transcends sports. Texas is superior to a&m in all the ways that matter, and from the evidence we've seen, Florida is superior to FSU as well, even if there's greater historical parity on the football field.

Aggy with their 67,000 claimed enrollment is now diploma mill.   Even some aggy admit this in their rants after losing on TexAgs.

It’s about this time every year high school seniors start receiving their acceptance letters  from colleges.   Pay attention to how many parents are posting their kids with their pics with the “I’m now a fighting Texas aggy” flyer on Facebook vs other schools and that’s all you need to confirm this.  Especially from families who have to family history connections to aggy.

When my oldest graduated nine years ago and he started telling me where certain friends and classmates were going to go to college, I was surprised that some got accepted to aggy.    But at the time I didn’t realize they lowered the bar.   That’s not to say these kids were dumb or not worthy of being accepted of a top tier college or one close to it if you will.  My own son applied to UT and barely missed the top ten percent in his high school class of 280 (he came in 30) and he got conditional admission to UT while some of his classmates who finished below him got unconditional admission to aggy.

This.

Just the fact that the rules for FSU's sod cemetery specify it must be a win over a ranked opponent as an underdog or any win in Gainesville.

So yes, last year when 11-0 FSU beat 5-6 Florida in Gainesville, it was worthy of putting it amongst their greatest road wins.

And in 2022, when 8-3 FSU beat 6-5 Florida in Tallahassee, the students rushed the field.

This whole business with leaving the ACC, the attitude amongst their fans has been heavily that it's UF's fault that FSU never got into the SEC even though UF sponsored them since the 1960s and it was FSU that chose to not join the SEC in 1990 when given the chance as they saw it as an opportunity to leapfrog UF by getting to be a big fish in a storm puddle rather than having to play ranked SEC teams every year.

It is impossible to overestimate the value of that patch on their uniforms to A&M. It was the only thing that made them "stand alone." It's something just as superfluous as all of their idiotic traditions and beliefs that they are really really really special.

ETA: The mascot is actually a Comanche rather than a Seminole. Comanches rode horses (brillilantly) and were unique in fighting with the lance. Neither is true of Seminoles.

And that's the funny thing about UT versus Texas A&M. They are all about that patch. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing SEC only gear. Lame AF.

It's pretty clear who the little brother is in Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Michigan, Oregon, and Washington. The hierarchy of the big three in Florida is less clear (at least to me). UF is 38-28-2 against FSU and 27-30 against Miami. Miami leads FSU 36-33.

I think being in South Florida places UMiami somewhere else culturally, kind of how UTEP is closer to the New Mexico schools than it is to UT, to the point where UF and UMiami might see each other as cousins more than they see each other as brothers.

There's definitely a rivalry, definitely hate, but for whatever reason I've never felt a "little brother" dynamic emanating there

In the Big Bro/Little Bro games, I think all of the big brother schools won last Saturday except for Arizona

Is ASU the little brother there?  Seems like they're almost like fraternal twins because if you ask me which has the better program history I honestly couldn't tell you.

Unlike cases where you just know like Texas, Oklahoma Michigan, Alabama, Oregon, Washington and to a lesser extent Colorado.

Neither one is going to be recognized academically as Harvard of the Southwest, but ASU is a diploma mill with a huge online enrollment. Neither one has had much historical success in football. ASU has had historical success in baseball, swimming and diving and little else. Arizona has a similar history in baseball and swimming and diving and solid background in basketball and softball.

Exactly my thoughts.  Maybe Arizona is the older fraternal twin in that scenario.

As far as considering academics in little brother determination, I personally look at bama/auburn and OU/OSU as pretty close (not that I've studied any usnwr rankings, just going on my personal rep).  Its not a Mich/MSU or even Texas/aggy level gap.

I knew a guy in high school who was in danger of not graduating up until maybe a month before graduation. He eventually passed whatever class he needed to in order to graduate. Dude was not smart.

A&M accepted him on the condition that he join the Corps.

So yeah, they'll take just about anybody.

That and UPenn is a private school.

Correct, it's really just Ohio and Louisiana. The Lafayette campus is of course trying to rebrand as The University of Louisiana but that's very recent. Ohio is really the only long term example.

Temple and Pitt (I'll still call them that if I want) are the other two main public schools in Pennsylvania so there's not really a U of State versus State U dynamic there.
