Signed up just now, to see what the hubub is all about.  Waiting for friend requests from the bots and thirst traps.

But seriously.  Who should I follow?  (No politics)

If you haven't been following the thread, the last two posts in the PSA thread about xitter have starter pack recommendations. Each pack can have up to 150 recommendations, and you can choose to follow them all with one button, or browse the list and selectively choose.

There's a lot of starter packs because anyone can create them. Here's a directory of all, searchable by user or key word Starter Packs - Bluesky Directory

So yeah, the increased engagement on BlueSky is very much a real thing - I talked to somebody I know who had a few million followers on twitter (not Traces of Texas), and they've got around 150,000 on BlueSky, but they are getting more comments, likes, etc., than they were on twitter, and they are seeing a massive spike in traffic to their website from Bluesky versus Twitter. They suspected (before Musk confirmed it) that links were being heavily throttled, but even with less than 50,000 followers on Bluesky they were getting far more traffic than twitter.

And looking at various starter packs, there continues to be a steady influx of people of all types (should hit 24 million tonight or tomorrow).

Unfortunately, the crypto and AI bros have come over - they realize that Leon was throttling links to their crypto sites, but they are easy as hell to spot and block/mute.

Let's say I want to find/follow the equivalent of SMB Twitter... What do I do?

Go on the BlueSky Directory, scroll down to starter parks, put in search terms, look at lists or follow all.   Lot of Longhorn lists on there but Geoff Ketchum is in some of the starter packs. Easy to unfollow or block him.   You can also search hashtags but your main feed will be only people you follow, not an algorithm that feeds you what it thinks you like.

I've blocked a lotta political stuff already too.  So long as the algo doesn't keep pushing more of that on me, I'm fine with that.

There is no algorithm. It's just who you follow. That's why you may want to follow more people than you did on twitter. There's also a lot fewer post dunks on bluesky than there were on twitter. If you look in the replies, the posts at the top are based on your own settings, too.

So... Twitter had a baby with Reddit?

No, because my feed is not full of AI/bots trying to steer me towards OnlyFans or buying drop-shipped lamps, or “experts” who are rocking a GED.

Also, not as many neckbeards, although they tend to hover around Slack/Discourse because it reminds them of IRC.

This is perhaps the single most annoying thing about reddit. Everyone has an opinion and you're not going to block them just for a shitty opinion in one thread. I mostly browse the local sub for local news but I've noticed a lot of threads in the bigger subs seem like questions to generate training for AI, or users with fake or reposting old posts trying to get rep. Nothing like that on bluesky. It's rather peaceful and straightforward imo. The block button on bluesky, along with using the blocklists, is a beautiful thing.

Conclusion: the number to follow is between 100 and 1000 depending on what you're looking for and who you're following.

It’s absolutely true.  There’s a lot of high-volume posters there.  Because it’s so easy to block or mute, people are feeling pretty comfortable to post likey the used to.  But I also see plenty who don’t post often, so it is true it’s about who you follow.

There is a “Discover” tab/feed that has a mix of people you follow and don’t follow, but it seems like the people you don’t follow that pop up in the Discover tab are still following or being followed by people you follow or have posted on similar topics to you, so it’s not quite an algorithm like we are used to, and you don’t default to the Discover tab/feed anyways.  I usually ignore it in favor of the feeds I have followed.

before I sign up I have 3 questions:
1) as @Underdog stated, but more broadly - are any of you assholes a cop?
2) I got of xittier because of how Elon centric it became, and I'm sure it is MAGA now, how will I know this isn't the case with yet another social media app
3) if I am on bluesky and not X or Trump's platform, will I be brought in for questioning as an enemy of the state?

ahhh - fuck it, floor it - I am in

The main feed is based solely on who you follow. If you only follow Immamac and a few other Longhorn users, then you'll get mostly Longhorns and shitposting.

If you follow 10 people who all post about different stuff, you'll have a feed that is about different stuff.

It's easy to block and mute people/topics and they stay blocked or muted.  Leon and the Blue Checkmark Brigade are not going to invade your feed.

My profile says I will unfollow if you post about politics even if we're in agreement. I don't want to know about the horse in the hospital this time. I like it so far. Easy to curate your feed to make it what you want and plenty of volume. I don't anticipate posting much, if at all.

Same. But I do flame those assholes that pound their chest that they came over from Twitter solely to be disruptive. They seem coincidentally aligned with a single political candidate and his/her agenda—no CR.

I grabbed some of those starter packs and I’m surfing on the “discover” tab.  Blocking/clicking the, “show me less of this,” on the stuff I don’t want.  Trying to let the algo work for me.

I’m not giving up or anything, but this platform has a ways to go.  My feed is mostly IT programmers, gamers and a few homosexual thirst traps.  NTTAWWT, but I’m not in to any of that.

Any good business or sports starter packs?

Have not found one but I am sure your searches are different from mine. I am getting a ton of dogs and cats. None being eaten thank god. but will have plenty of ammo for the Jade and Bevoette thread.

Have you searched the directory of starter packs by keyword?

I posted some sports starter packs in the thread about twitter PSA.

I’m glad I’m an early adopter and it’s good to see the better posters and media outlets going over.  But BlueSky has a ways to go yet.

I’m using the “Discover” tab to let the algo recommend more posters to follow.  It’s getting me…some, but not enough.  Instead it fills me feed with gamers and politics.  I scrubbed my starter packs for gamer and politics posters and unfollowed them. Now I’m clicking, “Show me less of this” on those guys.  Might have gotten a little better?  But not near better enough.

Algo also pushes the occasion kink/pervert stuff.  NTTAWWT, but that isn’t my bag sry.
