South Korea's president declares martial law - WTF is going on?

OK, catching up and don't know that area much. President is unpopular. Doctors are striking. Pres says fuck that, my way or the highway and invokes martial law. Military barely moves. Opposition said fuck that, voted it down. Military still did not move.

I can remember the massive riots/protests that went on in Korea in the 1980's and this does not look like it is there yet. Yet.

Does this impact the price of kimchi at HEB?

Do yourself a favor and go to an Asian supermarket or an even bigger favor and make your own.

Moments after South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced he would lift the martial law people outside the National Assembly celebrated, the AFP news agency reports.

It adds that Yoon says martial law troops have withdrawn after the National Assembly voted to block his imposition of military rule.

The jar I have in my fridge is from MT Supermarket, got it last weekend.  The selection at H-Mart is incredible.

But may have to learn our own if S. Korea goes all Mad Max.

I have made it, not hard. Put a game on, cut up veggies. Wear I live spices are sometimes hard to find and as Brisket will tell you the furthest north I will go in Austin is the Posse East.

Lol.  I was not questioning your kimchi method, good sir.  Though, due to the timing of posts, it would appear that way.

I was questioning why the President of SK would go to the trouble of declaring martial law before backing down so soon thereafter.  Was it a test to see where the military stands?

Why not both?

And I think the military said um, nah. Does not seem like he had the grounds to do this. Shit, looked it up and last time declared was after the President (and former General) was assassinated. This seems like he was pissed since he could not push through his vision/legislation.

It seems like the kind of thing you'd at least want to give your most friendly general a heads up about.

So weird.

Hey man, I don't drop the turds, I'm just pointing to them floating there in the punch bowl.  Drink up if you want, no skin off my nose.

You think I’m drinking up?  You haven’t been paying attention. I’ll still be able to navigate through life nonetheless.

I mean....unless your kimchi supply gets cut off abruptly.  Then shit gets REAL.

You live in a tent?

Actually, in a few weeks I will be.

Decided to sell everything and live the nomadic lifestyle for a while.  I work remotely anyway, so why stick to only one place?

This is just S. Korea returning to some OLD habits.  35+ years of peaceful civilian rule is good, but S. Korea was under military rule for decades before that.  "Functioning Democracy" is historically a pretty fresh thing for them.  And old habits die hard.

And yeah.....the global trend towards hard right/corrupt authoritarianism in formerly democratic states is a thing.

It's funny because, if anything, Brisket is underselling it (at least as far as South Korea goes). Global trends aside, that country is deeply fucked up beyond all recognition. Most of the men behave like the worst American incels, there is an all out gender war going on over there that makes our petty squabbles over minor things like *pfft* abortion and shit look minor by comparison. They made the "too small" (finger-pinch) hand gesture a literal hate crime because men in South Korea got so upset about it. If you're interested, go look it up, it's actually fucking wild.

They live in what is probably the most hyper-capitalist country on the planet with a modern progressive veneer that barely conceals an incredibly oppressive caste system that would make any Japanese person blush. They're literally teetering on the brink of all out civil conflict at all times, with the constant threat of invasion from the North, and everyone tries to pretend things are perfectly fine most of the time. When that powder keg explodes it's going to be epic, and not in a good way. The Ben-Hur remake kind of way.

Throw in the stress of a rapidly shrinking/aging population. One of the lowest birth rates in the world.
