I was listening to the Ikard-Lehman podcast, where they were discussing OU’s pro day.

-don’t worry so much about the number of NFL scouts that showed, they said- you need a top QB and Edge rusher to get a bunch of them.

-a lot of comments about players I rarely heard of during the season “maybe they get invited as a camp body, and anything can happen after that”

- after discussing how much they like CB Woodi Washington as a person, they noted that his times would be good for a DT prospect

- a lot of comments about players physically looking better now, than during the season. Is it possible that Schmitty, demonstrably better than Madden as a S&C coach 20 years ago,  is demonstrably worse than Becton, now?

Becton is the best in the business, so yes, he's behind.

Sorry if I missed any sarcasm.

No sarcasm. More than anything, amazed that they have fallen so far behind.

S&C is a science, and the very best are lifetime students, constantly trying to learn more. Madden wasn’t, and maybe Schmidt isn’t.

I agree. I think Schmidt has hit a wall. He's 62 and is still doing stuff from the 90s or early aughts, while Becton (I'm not sure) is in his 40s. That's a pretty big gap when you think about it. Becton is constantly evolving, while Schmidt thinks the old ways are better. Like you said, he's more like Madden.

I dont know enough about either of them to comment however, if someone isnt looking deep at the medical and hard science of nutrition, workout regiment and recovery cycles, they are fossils. That shit occurs at the non-pro athletics of marathon, body competition, iron man, weight lifting and well, pretty much every sport on the planet. I struggle to understand how anyone not in the medical/science fold of S&C still has a job in P5 college football outside of extreme also rans without any money.

Posters on Sooners Illustrated aren't big fans of Joe Jon Finley as the TE coach. They have a thread right now talking about how former highly rated TE prospect Davon Mitchell is now clocking in at 275. He's "shaping up to be more of a blocking TE", per some of their sunshine pumpers.

"He's only 18!"

"He'll lose it by the summer time!"

"He's really carrying it well!"

Schmidt and JJF have a history of swelling their TEs up to unhelpful sizes, per some of the haters there. I haven't tried to verify further.

I found the spoilered post below to be both insightful and hilarious (as a Texas fan). Kanak at TE cracks me up. The hagiographic tale of his turn from solid Clemson commit to OU signee, tearfully apologizing to Coach Dabo for having to go with his heart and begging Coach Vegetables to take his top 100 ranking and let him sign with his first class in a painful act of betrayal to Coach Dabo for both of them - what a guy. Whispers of "Coach BV's next great All American LB" could be heard on Norman podcasts and in coach/booster gatherings. Now? 7th string TE. hahahahahaha

Spoiler

Joe Jon has 8 players in his TE room. Mitchell is one of six players that did not take a TE snap in a game for OU last season. With that many new options to put on the field, one would think that performance on gamedays for the TE group has to go up this fall. Even if Mitchell can't run routes and/or catch the ball, his size suggests he is going to be an asset to the offense as a blocking TE.

84 Davon Mitchell TE 6-4 275 R-Fr. York, Ala. (Los Alamitos [Calif.] HS)
81 Will Huggins TE 6-6 262 R-Sr. Lenexa, Kan. (Pittsburg State University)
44 John Locke Jr. TE 6-4 252 R-Jr. San Antonio, Texas (Louisiana Tech University)
86 Carson Kent TE 6-4 244 R-Jr. Milton, Ga. (Kennesaw State University)
18 Kaden Helms TE 6-5 238 R-Jr. Bellevue, Neb. (Bellevue West HS)
22 Trynae Washington TE 6-4 233 Fr. Midwest City, Okla. (Carl Albert HS)
12 Jaren Kanak TE 6-2 230 Sr. Hays, Kan. (Hays HS)
19 Kade McIntyre TE 6-3 220 R-So. Fremont, Neb. (Archbishop Bergan HS)

@Constant @Pdawg88 @kilroydos and any sooner I am forgetting, what are y'all's thought about JJF and the TE position at OU right now?

I remember when Jackson Arnold was the truth and we were going to get to know it. Also, Burks was a revelation who was going to be next great 1st round WR out of OU. That feels like years ago, man. Or 8 months ago, whatever.

On the Ikard and Lehman podcast a few weeks ago, they were talking about Mitchell's weight.  Ikard came to OU as a TE originally before moving to center.  He said "Be careful, my man.  Just a few more pounds and you're going to look down and see the ball between your legs."

I laughed.

He’s robbing the university and has been as long as he’s been a coach. He is a joke. The TE room is as bad as I can remember, including the 90’s. Plus he looks like a complete dip shit so it’s hard to take him serious at all.

I'd certainly feel a lot better about the situation if any of the TEs had either performed to expectations or improved in any marked way over the course of his time in Norman.  But other than that, great dude, no notes.....
