When you understand that perhaps one can make a case that killing someone who ran a machine that kills people for profit....maybe isn't murder...then it's an interesting discussion.

Imagine this guy designed and built gas chambers, for profit, that were used to kill jews.  And then some jewish dude shoots him dead.  Gonna call that murder?  There's a band of circumstances you can consider, some where it's a no-brainer of a justified action, others where it's just plain old murder....and then a big band of circumstances in the middle.

There's a reason that there's been a broad social reaction of "meh" and "what did you expect?" in response to the killing of an exec of perhaps the worst health insurance company in the country.

This is an interesting question. I'd counter with this, do you think that 100% of the people that have ever been murdered didn't deserve it? Have you never seen a documentary about a very abusive person being murdered by a victim, as an example?

I mean, UHC is fine with the medical neglect of millions of people every year.

They built a fucking AI bot to systematically deny claims, and then argued in court that it was legal because the sick could simply go through their multi-year appeals process. Nevermind that many of them have perhaps months if denied care, so UHC gets to simply memory hole all their extracted sacks of capital neglected patients.

Yep.  As a fellow member of the bar, it's hard for me to wrap my head around it.  It's time for me to leave this thread.

If you can't handle the ugliness of American healthcare and understand why the general response to a cold blooded murder is "meh" or even "hooray", then you must be extremely fortunate to never have a family member go through that systemic medical neglect.

Stories like that are why some of us really, really, really believe in The Rule of Law.  It's much better than the alternative.  We -- meaning the people in power, who are most likely to be among the victims of such violence -- should do all we can to make sure that we have a system that provides some measure of justice and a non-violent means of redress of grievances for everyone, so that "Rule of the Gun" doesn't become our substitute system.

You think I'm championing populist violence.  Far from it.  I'd much, much, much prefer that we opted into and built a system so that we could honestly say "violence is never justified, you have plenty of peaceful means to obtain a just outcome."  I'm just pointing out that we have opted into the opposite of that.  That was stupid.  We shouldn't have done that.  We should dramatically change course.

But I know that we won't.  We are pot-committed to our current path (remember, it only gets worse, and there is no bottom).  So, we've opted for a system where violence is inevitable.  Knowing that we've opted into that, it's hard to have sympathy for a society that is now crying "oh no, the inevitable consequences of my own actions."

I am really, really not trying to CR this, but I am thinking of examples to fit this. Sometimes, if it suits your thoughts and beliefs, "murder" is not what you would call it.

A few months ago, there would have been a LOT of people in this country to have been OK with "murder" if a certain bullet had veered a few inches aside.

I'm with you on everything but the "fuck this guy."  Maybe I'll get there.  Maybe it is a true "fuck this guy" situation, and he just went the fuck off.  Want to know more about his story and motive.  I remain in the cautious territory of

200w.gif?cid=82a1493b2723eccnt5mn7dvtv2s

...but we'll see.  Again, if we set up a system that fucks over tens of thousands of people on matters of life and death, and that system functionally has no recourse......if it wasn't this shooter and victim, it was gonna be another shooter and victim.  Create a system that deals out death and is immune to any peaceful means of reform/correction, and you've made a violent response inevitable.

As a society, we've made that choice.  We have set up that system, and built an impenetrable wall of protection around it so that it cannot and will not change by any peaceful means.  Which means we have selected for a system where violence is the only recourse.  Dumb as hell, but that's what we've chosen.  So...

No.  Read my post above.

This situation -- a society where a large portion of people, and growing, sees violence as their only means of recourse, and they have a point -- IS NOT WHAT I WANT.  I DON'T WANT IT AT ALL.  We should STOP choosing to have that society, we should choose differently.

Ok. If we get to a point where UHC, the worst actor by far, changes their behavior, then I see your point. All it takes is an effective politician to change this behavior. Or corporations not choosing UHC for their group coverage because they’re cheaper than BCBS (which we just did, much to my chagrin even though I’m paying less money). It should not take the death of an executive to effect positive change, but alas here we are.

I apologize to you. I misread you and was harsh.

Wait, are you seriously suggesting that the fix to this country's healthcare debacle is to ask large corporate employers, most of whom report to shareholders, to care enough about their employees and push for a change to the current system of health insurance, which themselves report to . . . shareholders? Maybe I'm interepreting this incorrectly, but if you think that's a solution, I can only just sit here befuddled and let out a lot of very nervous and angry laughter.

I think that health insurance needs to be completely decoupled from employment. But that's another matter altogether.

Schizophrenia often comes on in the early 20’s I think?  Dude mighta been just a regular person whose brain just fell apart.  Not his fault there.  Biology.

Eta

Not his fault he came down with a serious mental disorder.  He needs to be tried and convicted of murder just the same.

Whatever happened to that dude here in Austin who was a figure in the printed gun movement then went to jail for underage hookers? Haven’t heard about him since. As I remember he kind of looked like baker mayfield.

Is it the same dude that lives in Thailand and used to post here in the DT every day and brag about all the underage girlfriends he had?

Got it.  So first degree murder now fine and dandy as long as you agree with the political or social motivations behind the killing. Victim not alleged to have done anything illegal?  Fuck him - worked for an evil corporation so he deserved it.  2 kids left without a father?  Fuck them too.  Pathetic.

I have no doubt we'll see some massive hypocrisy from several posters when this plays out under a different set of facts and the killing does not align with their personal political/social belief systems.

In the early 90s, I managed a Worker's Comp program for a UT system medical school. UT-System is self insured. Residents were getting pin pricks. They were filing for AZT drugs. My leadership in Austin were denying the claims and requests. I was hearing from Residents crying about being denied the drugs. I felt like absolute dogshit. For my mental and moral health, I turned down a promotion w/in the group and left for an outside job.

I can assuredly say I will never get shot for selling out my soul to make a few bucks.

So you'll forgive me if I have no sympathy for the former CEO. Consequences sometimes happen, deserving has nothing to do with it.

My internal bullshit detector is starting to go off.

The Pennsylvania State Police release the above photos which would almost have to be from a body cam. So this is exactly what the officer saw.   How does the above photos mesh with the earlier photos and this quote:

https://www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/news/luigi-mangione-altoona-mcdonalds-hero-unitedhealthcare-ceo-shooting/

Quote

Frye, who has been with the department for about six months, and his partner responded to the McDonald's after the 911 call. Frye said as soon as Mangione removed his mask, he "recognized him immediately."

The is no way on Gods Green Earth that you could "recognized him immediately".  Maybe LEO were given additional photos. Perhaps if they had already figured out his name, they might have distributed other photos...Seems unlikely since we haven't heard about that.

I'm now starting to wonder about the 911 call and if it actually even exists.  Will be curious if it even exists.

Is your argument that people whose family members needlessly die or suffer in agony because of assholes like the UHC guy should just lay back and take it? Sorry pal, that's just the system we have, nothing you can do about it. Maybe submit a letter of concern on your congressperson's website?

It seems you have no problem with corporate murder, but blanche at the thought of a citizen punishing a key player in that system. Fuck off with that pearl clutching. It's not murder if it's justified.

For example, UHC was taking in billions in payments for in-home health assessments and care, and then never followed up with care. At least according to the Office of the Inspector General.

It is! They’re labors of love that require some intelligence and craftsmanship which is undoubtedly why you basically never see them used in crimes. 99% of criminals will find it easier to steal one or buy it privately. For him to plan this all out and then keep the smoking 👻 gun on him suggests that he wanted to be caught.
