It's not a stretch to think this guy bought gun private party to use for murder or bought/fashioned a suppressor for a different gun.

If so this will be very easy to trace, assuming it was not smuggled into the country.

How would you trace a homemade suppressor?

My money is on this guy not being a pro, I think he doesn't give a shit, but at the same time he's not a complete moron and would like to get away with it.   total guess.  Time will tell, or perhaps not.

I am working under the assessment offered upthread that the gun was a BT bolt action integrally suppressed handgun. The video is 100% compatible with that assessment, including the shooter working the bolt. But we could certainly find out that that was not the weapon used.

fair enough.  My point was it could be fab'd  something like a Ruger Mark IV with a homemade suppressor.

I can't make out much of the gun in that video other than it's black, the barrel is long, and he appears to be racking it.

He completely ignored that lady witness that was standing right there and let her run away. Would a “pro” do that?

A pro knows that woman will not be able to provide a single bit of evidence not already captured on video. And he positioned himself with apparent knowledge of the camera angle, another sign it's a pro. A pro does the job without concern for the plebians. Not to mention killing an innocent bystander can bring a lot more heat than the target alone.

As noted, the shock of it all generally makes an eyewitness worthless for meaningful leads. Do the job and quietly walk away and they'll be remembering the wrong height and hair color before you've turned the corner. /pro tip

Agree that the video is not totally clear, but if you watching the racking motion in the video and compare it to the motion used in the youtube video on the B&T, it is virtually identical. He tilts it and racks it every time he shoots it. Could be failure to cycle an autoloader based on using subsonic rounds, but the racking motion would generally be different. I think that Brian got it right earlier. We'll find out eventually.

Do pros take their gins with them to dump later?  Shouldn’t they be using a clean gun that they can just drop at the scene, or is it still worth hiding/ditching elsewhere instead?

I don't know these things, but if he had a similar gun in his bag and then dumped the one used in the shooting, it seems like it could really fuck up the investigation if he were to be caught.

That shooter is a cool character under pressure.   The stereotype is someone doing this out of rage would probably panic after the first jam.

CRAZY shit.

Seems like maybe a dad who lost a child due to denied claims. This is right out of a  John Grisham novel.

I had no clue this was going to end up being such a big deal when I did the OP. Very unique to see what appears to be a professional hit.

If it's a pro, then it could be any number of things besides a disgruntled patient, although it could be that as well.  Might have owed the wrong guy money.

I follow @DGlaucomflecken on socials for medical humor, and he regularly trashes insurance companies in general, and UHC specifically.  He's an ophthalmologist that survived a sudden cardiac arrest, and afterwards his insurance company denied charges from the intensivist who they claimed was out of network, even though the hospital was in network.  Not like he had a choice which intensivist treated him when he was unconscious.  He proceeded to crucify them on social media.

Not sure he has the Surly brand of dark humor to address this development specifically, though.

Another detail I just remembered - he created so much negative publicity for the insurance company they made it go away by forcing the physician to write off the hospital to pressure the intensivist to write off the charge.  As a physician himself, that just made him even more mad, because he knew the guy had a valid right to be paid for services rendered, but the system had everyone involved by the short and curlies.

I take this back. Watched the video a few more times and this is certainly not "virtually identical". Appears his racking motion in more in line with a semi-auto that is failing to cycle.

The suspect was last seen entering Central Park, according to officials.

this is how I see it as well.  doesn't look like the twist motion in the videos.

Certainly a pro or well trained shooter who pulled this off very calmly.  A civilian doing this over a some denied claim or death of a loved one would be emotional and want to face him while he was shooting him on the ground, yelling at him exacting vengeance.  So to me it’s a pro.

cool as a cucumber. Dressed in a common morning outfit.  Supposedly waiting near the hotel and then ent up behind him.  One in the shin, the rest in the torso.  Kept his brass.  Walked down the street and hopped on a e-bike Likely into Central Park, change the hoodie, and head out.  A suppressed weapon with subsonic ammo would hardly be heard in the general din of nyc.

Probably because the Gambino Family moved their health plan to UHC and got a big premium increase and higher deductibles.

wife said he said to her he was getting “threats”.  I’d be looking into his love life first.  Maybe he was going to trade her in on an upgrade.

Racking talk not going away, but if this was a pro, I think that he would have the right hardware setup to cycle suppressed reliably. He has to cycle it for every shot. If its a bolt action, pro; semi-auto failing to cycle, amateur. Who knows.

NYC has had a gunshot detection system for at least a decade. Using a silencer and a subsonic round probably gave the shooter an extra minute before cops were rolling.

Interesting that the above graphic says he got on a Citibike.  I assume those aren't free. The only time I've rented a bike required me to download an app and validate my phone number.  Either he's stupid and will be caught before the end of the day, or he thought it through.  It's not really rocket science: A prepaid burner phone,  a fake gmail,  and one of the anonymous gift Visa cards.

It's fun to speculate but I would push back, for now, on jumping to the conclusion that he's a "pro."

He had calm demeanor because he had probably accepted his own fate at the time he planned this all out. He expects, and maybe even wants, to be caught. Most likely he has taken his own life, and there's going to be a manifesto of some kind.

It's a $2300 gun and subject to ATF approval to purchase. Assuming he didn't get it off the black market (unlikely imo), we're talking a few months on the waitlist and jumping through the ATF hoops. It is probably a relatively easy purchase to trace. Can't imagine there are a lot of these in circulation, niche gun, limited imports.

Why would someone want a manual cycled hand gun?

Same benefits of a revolver.  No identifiable brass that can be tied back to the pistol.  In this case, sub-sonic 22's are basically an empty shell case with the primer providing the gas pressure.  It's enough to fire, but "normal" semi-auto's won't cycle the round and it can jam inside the gun.  You also have sound concerns.  The cocking of a revolvers hammer and the striking of the firing pin.  The cycling of a semi-auto bolt is actually not all that quiet either.

Just saw this, see my post above about the problems with using 22 sub's in a semi.  They don't produce enough pressure to cycle another round and that's exactly what it looks like is happening in the video.  Not seeing him pick up his brass, was this stated as what happened?

Police report 3 casings and 3 unfired 9mm rounds found at the scene. I think this supports the notion that the shooter was using an semi auto with either a homemade can (as @locodos suggested) or some other sub optimal set up (no nielsen device).

See 4:10 mark

I mean, making a can is insanely easy nowadays if you don't care about your dog getting shot. With 3D printing, or even just press forming sheet metal, you can make baffles with very very little effort. It's not like mufflers are classified technology

Just saw this.  He's manually ejecting each round into his left hand.  Not sure why the pistol didn't eject them automatically?  Watered down hand loads?  It obviously was a hit, just not sure if it was a disgruntled dude or a pro?  He sure seemed calm and collected.  You can practice for years at the range, but most still get the yips in high-stress settings.

Correct.  Three live rounds found and three spent cartridges.  Live rounds seems weird?  A "pro" seemingly would be better prepared, but man that dude was calm and collected in the video.
