Makes as much sense as casting Idris Elba in The Dark Tower

Disney really fucked up with this movie about a princess, meant for six-year old girls, that seems to have missed the mark with the middle-aged male football fan demographic.

Which is why the trailer is getting down-voted.  Need a trailer just for middle-aged male football fans that is nothing but Gal Gadot walking around, reading the phone book.

Right, it's all those damn incels, not because the trailer looks terrible. You should go bump the Acolyte thread again.

Oh it looks like ass to those of us who are middle-aged male football fans, it was dumb to go with that hairstyle from the original. I know they could still be working on the dwarf VFX and some of the other VFX between now and the release, but we saw what happened with the train scene in Black Panther - what you sawin the trailer is what you got.

But my daughter and her friends want to go see it on the big screen or watch it when it's streaming, and that's all that ultimately matters to Disney.

They just had a huge hit with Wicked, when the original trailer/posters were causing some people to lose their shit.  It's in the top ten all-time highest-grossing musicals already.

From what I've seen online, people think Rachel Ziegler is really good in it and Gal Gadot and the CGI dwarves are fairly terrible. We'll wait for Disney+.

So I haven't really followed the backstory, but it sure seems like the failure of this film is being very vocally celebrated by a certain... segment of the population.  Without getting too CR, why did this movie become a right-wing target?

It's still around a 2.0 on IMDB and most of the critics are laughing at it.  Just a few of the reviews:

"Lazy, visually repellant" - The Independent
"Exhaustingly awful" - The Guardian
"Disney has trashed its reputation" - The Times
"A strange, hot mess" - Huff Post
"Listless" - ScreenDaily
"Good enough... for TV" - Vanity Fair
"Film has a major identity crisis" - BBC

Oh this movie is very clearly terrible.  I was just curious why some folks seem so happy at this being the case.  No matter, I'm sure I'll still be dragged to see it.

Lead actress hated the source material and gave interviews to that effect

During an interview with Variety, Zegler explained how her version of Snow White focuses on leadership and self-discovery rather than the traditional fairy tale narrative of a damsel in distress waiting for a prince.

"I just mean that it's no longer 1937, and we absolutely wrote a Snow White that's not gonna be saved by the prince, and she's not gonna be dreaming about true love," Zegler said.

"She's dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be and the leader that her late father told her she could be if she was fearless, fair, brave, and true. And so, it's just a really incredible story for young people everywhere to see themselves in."

Zegler referred to the original 1937 Snow White movie as outdated and even suggested that the prince was depicted as a "guy who literally stalks her."

In a separate interview with Extra TV, Zegler reiterated her perspective: "The original cartoon came out in 1937, and very evidently so. There's a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird, weird. So we didn't do that this time. It's an inner journey that she goes on to find her true self and she meets a lot of people along the way that make the journey really incredible."

Can't speak for anyone else, but this has been a long, miserable pattern with Disney of taking established storylines and just dipping them in warmed over kitten shit when there is no need to.  The Acolyte comes to mind.  Everyone was so excited about it, and it was just awful.  Marvels still holds the biggest modern flop as it was a budget of $270M and it made a little over $40+M on opening weekend as this one has.

Then you add in premier cancellations because the studio can't trust that their lead actor will promote the project.  It's not just conservatives, the original casting moved away from "little people" so as not to offend them, leading to massive backlash from the community who weren't being cast.

Sums up a lot of the issues

In addition to "Snow white is supposed to be white, not brown" - Brown-skinned Snow White actress decided to go off script during press junkets and weigh in on the Israel/Palestine conflict, creating a major conflict with her Israeli co-star. She also bad-mouthed Trump and his supporters on social media. All of this while promoting the film. Not smart.

They also removed the white Prince from the story.

Don't have girls, and can't imagine any scenario where I would watch this.  But its been hard not to see this disaster coming.  Not the greatest marketing campaign.

1.  They pissed off dwarfs by making a movie with dwarfs living in a cave (Dinklage)

2.  They pissed off dwarfs by deciding to CGI the dwarfs rather than give acting jobs to dwarfs

3.  Ziegler pissed off people who liked the original story.

4.  Gadot pissed off people by taking a Pro-Israeli stance

5.  Zegler pissed off people by taking a Pro-Palestinian stance.

6.  Zegler pissed off MAGA by saying "may Trump supporters and Trump voters and Trump himself never know peace."

And Mine Train is a B- roller coaster with too long of a line.  Just go do Thunder Mountain in half the time.

It got so bad that Disney outright cancelled the UK premier and the US one was very small and reporters were not allowed to view it in advance - those in social media were limited to reactions only - not real movie reviews in advance.  YouTubers are just destroying it in their reviews and dunking all over it.

It's the original is fucking great, if overlooked, and they didn't do anything stupid with the casting.  They cast Hawaiian's as Hawaiian.  Bubbles is a black man, as he was.  The aliens are crazy white characters(Disney can't NOT do that).

All of this.

It's the same reason Miss Marvel got so much blow back because not only was she saying she's stronger than Thor repeatedly(true or not) she was telling people the move isn't made for them.

Basically telling half, or more, of the MCU fan base "This isn't for you and you shouldn't see it"

Not to get all CR, the first point is right.  Maga assholes hated a non white, or all the pretty, Snow White.

But the second point is wrong.   They literally cast an Hawaiin to play the part, born and raised.  She is dark enough and the character in the cartoon wasn't so dark it should make a difference.

Same think happened with Jasmine when a certain group said "she's not Persian enough" which was just as silly then as now IMO.

All of this is true.  Especially the roller coaster comment.

Honestly if Zeigler hadn't opened her mouth about the story and how "it was in need of updating" the rest might have been overlooked as in other disney movies.

Is this serious?  It only made around $40M+ against the backdrop of a $300M budget before marketing expenses.....vastly under what it was projected and/or needed to make.

I went and googled it, sounds like it was a flop despite being #1:

Despite being the No.1 movie over the weekend, Disney’s latest live-action remake of “Snow White” underwhelmed in its debut, reports The New York Times, citing box office data from Comscore. The polarizing reboot, which drew criticism for its casting decisions and story choices, earned $43 million domestically and $87.3 globally in its opening weekend. Not a happy ending for this costly fairy tale, which cost Disney at least $350 million to make and market worldwide.

It's about context - you can be the highest grossing film when compared to a bunch of lower budget, small films and it doesn't tell the whole story.  They have a massive recapture they have to make just to break even - which it seems as if they are never going to hit.

It's a flop because we're in a time when 87 million dollars worldwide in one weekend is considered bad because you've saddled a movie with a 250 million dollar budget from the onset. How these movies get this out of control budget wise is just beyond me. Looking at the movie I'm trying to figure out where the money went. Is it mostly a CGI budget because Ziegler and Gadot can't charge that much to be in a movie?

Yea that's crazy. I saw the headline "box office number 1" and in my world that just meant a hit. I guess nowadays it's not enough to be #1 because the costs of these movies is insane.

I am in the minority in that I actually like a lot of these remakes, too, so I'll end up seeing this on streaming.

I saw this posted (spoilering it because it's long) which also makes the case for generative AI to save costs:

Spoiler

Unsurprisingly soft box office for Snow White, and it could get worse if admissions drop off from here. With a reported budget of $270m and a reasonably heavy P&A spend, the movie will probably need to make $600m to break even. Six observations:

1. Disney will be happy to cut losses and move past this. This is old development, greenlit during the bizarre cultural era of 2020-21, mired in controversy. It’s about loss mitigation at this point.

2. With that said, Disney needs to stop making these live action remakes. They are tarnishing its brand. I don’t care how much the Lilo and Stitch remake makes at the box office. Disney has traded its reputation as the preeminent home of creativity and “magic” for this regurgitated nonsense. Disney is relying on diminishing assets, and if it continues exclusively producing Marvel movies and live action remakes, it is facing an eventual crisis.

3. This movie is the best argument for generative AI I’ve ever seen. Everything about it, from the grotesque CGI dwarfs, to the costume design and color palettes, to Gal Gadot’s line delivery seems like it was spit out by a semi-intelligent computer. Again, this is dangerous territory for Hollywood. When your creative output resembles the constituent elements of an IP being fed into a computer, remixed and spit out, you are susceptible to teenagers in their bedrooms doing the same at lower cost and with closer proximity to the target audience (albeit without the marketing power).

4. Rachel Zegler is talented and surely has a solid Broadway career ahead of her. However, this presumably spells the end of her career as a commercial movie actor. A substantial part of an actor’s job is to sell movie tickets, and you simply cannot recklessly antagonize and alienate 50%+ of the domestic audience. Zegler’s brand is so toxic, and she is so disliked at this point, that absent a major reversal, any mainstream project she acts in will be collateral damage. Disney is not to blame - she was cast several years ago after being anointed by Steven Spielberg, and nobody could have predicted that she would be so indiscreet or polarizing.

5. Zegler is arguably not to blame either. She is a product of an echo chamber. If you watch back her infamous D23 interview where she labeled the beloved original movie as “weird” (which may live with her for the remainder of her career), there is a level of assuredness in her statements approaching hubris. Why? Because she can’t imagine anyone disagreeing with her. In her bubble nobody does. The entertainment business needs to find a solution to this, because as long as the internet exists, the ideological chasm will only grow.

6. SW is a good illustrator of the five categories of content (link below). It is essential for few, and deferred for many (“I’ll watch it on Disney+”). Maybe Disney is fine with that. It is also category five for some - intentional avoidance and undermining. They want to see it fail, and are seeking to destroy it.

I understand it's significance in film and animation but I always thought the original Snow White was a boring snooze fest.

I think this gets lost in all of the other controversies. It’s an almost 90 year old movie and is not that great anyway.

A remake of something like The Lion King, Aladdin or The Little Mermaid make financial (not creative) sense because the parents of the kids now grew up with those in their home and in theaters. It puts multiple generations in the seats to share something nostalgic for the parents and something fun for the kids. Snow White was locked in the Disney vault (remember that?) for years and the 25-45 year old parent didn’t have access to the movie and grow up with it. My kids have seen it but it’s not an essential text for them, nor me. Dumbo was the other live action remake that didn’t do well for similar reasons.

Its not just nowadays.  Two of the most famous flops of all time - Waterworld and Ishtar - both opened at #1.

These big budget flops often open #1 because the studio has put so much into them.  They just suck and don't have staying power past week 1.

Peter Dinklage comments..

“Literally no offense to anything, but I was sort of taken aback,” he said. “They were very proud to cast a Latino actress as Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.’ Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me. You’re progressive in one way, but you’re still making that fucking backward story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together. Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.”

Spoiler

The day of the the interview’s publication, Disney stated that it wanted to consult with members of the dwarfism community on the film. A day later, the studio changed tactics: It would change the dwarf characters to “magical creatures” created with CGI. And that’s where the real trouble began.

“Little Women: LA” star and producer Terra Jolé said that while she appreciates Dinklage speaking out, his power and privilege also create adverse effects. Jolé said that many little people in the entertainment industry don’t necessarily agree with Dinklage’s take; people in her family auditioned for the Disney film. With his condemnation, she said, Disney made Dinklage the sole arbiter on the topic.

“It boggles my mind that a network, instead of listening to an entire community, [is] listening to one person,” she said. “That’s just how much pull this one person has created in this society because of where he is on the level of popularity.”

Another member of the LP community, journalist and documentarian Cara Reedy, was even blunter in her assessment. “He’s no dwarf hero,” she said. “He does not talk about it. He’s talked about it twice. He pretends like it doesn’t exist. But he has not assisted [the LP community].” (Reps for Dinklage did not respond to requests for comment.)
