I rewatched the entire Georgia game so you don't have to

Ever since it happened, I've been puzzled by how a seemingly pretty mortal Georgia team came in to Austin and beat us by double digits. I wanted to refresh my memory on what happened, and understand what it means for our rematch tomorrow. So I bit the bullet and rewatched the entire thing, taking a lot of notes. What follows is a drive-by-drive recap and my takeaways.
First off, here's the game on YouTube:
Spoiler

1st Half Drives:
Spoiler

Georgia drive #1 - 15:00 1st quarter - GA 25 yard line

  • Two poor throws by Beck on 1st and 2nd, and it's 3-and-out. So far, so good.
Texas drive #1 - 14:00 1st - TX 13 yard line
  • Georgia's punter booms a 55+ yarder to pin us back. The punting game will be a big theme in the game.
  • Two quick throws for a 1st down, then a quick throw and an edge run by Wisner for another 1st.
  • A horizontal throw and a run up the middle go nowhere to put us in 3rd and long.
  • 3rd and long from the Texas 39. Protection is good but absolutely no one is open down field. QE ends up checking it down but it's incomplete anyway. It's possible he could have scrambled for the 1st, but not a given IMO.
  • A short punt gets a decent roll.
Georgia drive #2  - 10:39 1st, GA 17
  • Mukuba makes a tremendous interception on 2nd and 4 after pressure from Trey Moore, to give us great field position.
Texas drive #2 - 9:51 1st, GA 42
  • 1st down is a double reverse flea flicker but no one is open so QE checks down to Wisner. The throw is slightly behind him but catchable. If Wisner can catch this he has a TON of room to run, probably 30+ yards.
  • 2nd down we give Quinn a good pocket but he checks to Wisner for no gain. We then trade offside and false start penalties with them.
  • 3rd and 9, incomplete pass to well-covered Moore. Punt into the endzone, of course.
Georgia drive #3 - 8:19 1st, GA 20
  • First good drive of the game for either offense - Etienne up the middle for 20, and Beck passes for 20 and 15. Georgia flips the field.
  • Barron intercepts Beck at the Texas 5 yard line after a poor pass that the WR tipped. Beck gonna Beck.
Texas drive #3 - 3:33 1st, TX 5
  • 1st down is the patented Sark drive starting deep shot to Wingo. It's underthrown a little and falls incomplete but the CB interferes with Wingo.
  • 3rd and 6 at Texas 27: a corner blitz comes 100% free and nails Quinn from his blind side, causing him to fumble. At first glance I thought this was on a poor pass protection decision by Blue. He steps up into the line to block an oncoming LB. On replay, a stunt by the right side of Georgia's DL and the LB coming through the A gap appears to confuse Majors and Conner. Blue has to step up to clean up their mess which takes him away from protecting Quinn's backside. The broadcast shows a shot of Sark looking really pissed. Good pressure design by Georgia.
Georgia drive #4 - 1:40 1st, TX 13
  • Georgia takes advantage of the very short field and punches it in on 4 plays, 7-0 Georgia
Texas drive #4 - 15:00 2nd, TX 8
  • A terrific return by Golden (to the GA 35 or so) is negated by a holding call on Warren Roberson. Huge field position swing on this one penalty.
  • 3rd and 7 deep in our own territory: this is the infamous self-sack by QE that has been discussed plenty here. We actually give him a decent pocket and time, but instead of stepping up he hangs back in the pocket and Mykel Williams gets past Banks to grab Quinn's shoestrings. There's no shot in the broadcast of Quinn's view downfield, so we can't see if anything is open. I'm pretty sure that he would not have been able to scramble for the first, though.
  • A mediocre punt from the very back of the endzone and a decent return give Georgia excellent field position again.
Georgia drive #5 - 13:29 2nd, TX 28
  • Our D holds them to a FG given the short field. 10-0 Georgia
Texas drive #5 - 10:45 2nd, TX 25
  • Georgia absolutely detonates a screen pass on 2nd and 6. This looks like Tecmo Bowl when the defense picks the right play. If you're a "we were tipping play calls" conspiracy theorist, this is exhibit #1.
  • On 3rd and 6, Quinn makes an off target throw on a hook route to Bond and it's intercepted, to give Georgia yet another short field.
Georgia drive #6 - 9:59 2nd, TX 34
  • Taaffe misses an open field tackle to spring a Georgia WR for 18.
  • Etienne up the middle for a 15 yard TD after both our LBs bite on misdirection in the backfield.
  • Pretty poor defensive sequence for Texas. Getting winded? 17-0 Georgia
Texas drive #6 - 8:30 2nd, TX 25
  • A horizontal run and short pass do nothing on 1st and 2nd down.
  • 3rd and 11: Georgia brings 6, it's picked up but Blue is overwhelmed and pushed right into QE's face as the rest of the pocket collapses anyway. Quinn sacked.
  • We punt for 35 fucking yards to, you guessed it, give Georgia good field position.
Georgia drive #7 - 6:34 2nd, GA 45
  • Georgia is giving Beck good time to throw on this drive, and Etienne pops for a 10 yard run.
  • Beck throws incomplete on 3rd and 8 to end the drive in our territory
  • FG Georgia, 20-0
Texas drive #7 - 4:43 2nd, TX 25
  • Arch is in the game.
  • A free rusher forces an incompletion on 1st down.
  • We're stopped but pick up a first down on a facemask.
  • False start pushes us back 5 yards.
  • On 3rd and 6, Arch has good time to throw but short arms a downfield throw to Moore. Not sure what happened here. Just a bad throw with no chance.
  • Punt from our own 48 and guess what? It's a touchback!
Georgia drive #8 - 2:55 2nd, GA 20
  • Collins and Lole manhandle their blockers to stuff a run on 3rd and 1. Good defensive sequence for Texas.
  • 45 yard punt with no return
Texas drive #8 - 1:43 2nd, TX 20
  • Arch again, 20 yard scramble on 1st down.
  • Two quick throws to Blue for another 1st down and we're on the move.
  • 1st and 10 at Georgia 49: a defender runs right between Campbell and Williams without hardly being touched, not a stunt or blitz or anything fancy. No idea what happened here. Very poor communication/effort by those two. Defender flushes Arch who is then run down by Mykel Williams, who is spying him, for a loss of 10.
  • 2nd and 21 - Jalon Walker badly beats Cam Williams and hits Arch while in the process of throwing, forcing the fumble.
  • Exceptionally poor two-play sequence by the right side of our OL, after we were actually showing a little life.
Georgia drive #9 - 0:25 2nd, TX 30
  • Georgia does nothing but hits the FG just by virtue of field position, 23-0 Georgia at the half

2nd Half Drives:
Spoiler

Texas drive #9 - 15:00 3rd, TX 45

  • Georgia tries to catch us off guard with a squib kickoff but it's smartly recovered by Gbenda to give us good field position.
  • Wingo end around converts a 4th and 1.
  • Good throw by Quinn across the middle for 25 to Golden
  • 3rd and goal: QE has good time, but throws to a well-covered Golden and it's incomplete. Thankfully there's interference.
  • Two yard TD pass to Bond and 2-pt conversion, 23-8
Georgia drive #10 - 10:57 3rd, GA 25
  • Georgia's drive peters out and they punt from their own 45. Bolden fields it at the 8 but he's tackled immediately. Warren Roberson is holding again to back us up further to our own 5.
Texas drive #10 - 8:08 3rd, TX 5
  • 1st down is a completed deep shot to Golden. It's underthrown, but maybe on purpose? There are two defenders over the top of Golden and throwing it in front of him might well have been an INT.
  • A running play is stuffed on 3rd and 5 at the Georgia 29.
  • 4th and 6, Quinn throws incomplete on a very well covered slant route to Bond. Defender had a better shot at the ball than Bond. Golden is open over the middle but Quinn didn't see him.
Georgia drive #11 - 4:22 3rd, GA 31
  • Sorrell destroys the 1st down running play for a loss of 6
  • 3rd and 9: Beck intercepted by Barron, but it's called PI. Bottles are thrown, then it's not PI, etc, etc. You know the story.
Texas drive #11 - 3:00 3rd, GA 9
  • Completely unblocked Mykel Williams sacks QE on 1st down.
  • TD pass to Blue. Nice throw, nice execution on this play. 23-15 Georgia
Georgia drive #12 - 2:07 3rd, GA 11
  • This is the fucking back breaker. At this point we've scored 15 unanswered and the crowd is back into it. Excellent kickoff coverage stops them at the 11 and the team is pumped up. All the mo is on our side right now.
  • 1st down: run play for 0
  • 2nd down: incomplete pass. Uncalled hold on Mukuba as he gets near Beck.
  • 3rd and 10 from the 11: Georgia WR puts a sick move on Muhammad to get open. We bring 5 but Georgia gives Beck time. Complete for 21. Absolutely soul crushing.
  • The very next play is a double reverse flea flicker for ~45.
  • Etienne plows in on 4th and goal from the 1 inch line to make it 30-15.
Texas drive #12 - 11:59 4th, TX 20
  • Nice completion to Golden and a targeting call move us down the field quickly.
  • QE overthrows an open Wingo from the Georgia 45 on what would have been a 30+ yard gain.
  • 4th and 1, false start on Helm after Georgia does their all-DL-shift-at-once thing.
  • 4th and 6: Mykel Williams simply beats Kelvin Banks and hits his arm as he's throwing. Golden is open over the middle.
Georgia drive #13 - 10:23 4th, GA 44
  • Not much, other than a Georgia WR dropping an easy pass that would've been a sure 15+ yard gain.
Texas drive #13 - 9:27 4th, TX 20
  • 25 yard gain to Helm and another Georgia targeting call get us down the field.
  • QE is almost picked throwing to Wingo. Very lucky.
  • Once we get in their territory, this sequence ensues:
  • False start on Cam Williams
  • 1st and 15: QE pressured and throws incomplete. He probably bailed too soon on this pocket.
  • 2nd and 15: check down to Blue for a short gain
  • 3rd and 12: incomplete, off target for Golden
  • 4th and 12: Georgia brings 6, QE throws while backpedaling and it's complete to Wingo but short of the 1st. Really nice pressure design by Georgia on this play.
Georgia drive #14 - 5:26 4th - GA 19
  • 3rd and 4: Collins has Beck dead-to-rights for a big loss, but he herp-de-derps his way through traffic for the first down.
  • Etienne stuffed on 4th and inches.
Texas drive #14 - 2:13 4th - GA 40
  • Just desperation slings at this point. A couple near-interceptions and a jump ball to Helm.
  • Rusher beats Cam Williams on 4th and 6 and forces a bad throw to end the game.

OK, so what did I learn from subjecting myself to this?

  • I thought we were physically outmatched on the OL, but it wasn't as bad as I remembered. A lot of the pressure they got on Quinn was due to intelligent blitz schemes, or miscommunications on our part. They also did a good job of keeping tight coverage and limiting Quinn's options.
  • That said, Quinn did not play well. His interception was a bad throw, and he got away with a couple others. He threw at covered receivers several times. He was responsible for the self-sack deep in our own end, which really hurt us. There were a couple of opportunities for him to scramble for yardage that he didn't take.
  • Mykel Williams in particular played absolutely out of his mind. We had no answer for him.
  • Special teams hurt us and really contributed to the field position difference.
  • I think we got too cute at times with the horizontal passing and running game. I feel like we saw this some against aggy as well. Georgia's defense was too fast to be beaten like that.
  • They capitalized on our turnovers, and we largely couldn't on theirs, with the exception of the 3rd quarter interception. A big reason is because almost all of the turnovers happened deep in our end of the field.
  • Our D can play with them. They had one sustained drive (that admittedly came at a crucial time), and that's about it.
I feel somewhat better about tomorrow after rewatching. A lot of the negative things that we did can and should be cleaned up. We need Quinn to take care of the ball, special teams to not be a net negative, and Sark to not get too reliant on the east-west game, and we'll be ok. I expect that going into a hostile environment at College Station last weekend and coming away with the W will help our guys not feel like the moment is too big for them.
Hook 'em, fuck Georgia, ou sucks, let's fucking go.

But who threw the bottles.

The field position thing was the biggest factor. I think we kill ourselves by running plays at or behind the LOS and then throwing 49 yards downfield (and missing). That leads to far too many 3 and outs. Yes, hitting a quick TD would be huge, but we consistently do not do that.

We need to focus on the next first down until we get in an offensive rhythm. Our mediocre punting just underscores the necessity of getting first downs. Seems to me that we don’t throw nearly enough 5-7 yard passes.

Yep, check out our very first drive in my longcat up above. Our first four plays all went for like 5-7 yards, I think - two quick first downs. Then we go horizontal for two plays and put ourselves in a 3rd and long.

Good god our punting is bad this year. Just comically bad honestly. This roster has no real weaknesses except punting. And it is so bad that it should probably count as 2 or 3 major weaknesses.

How can any opponent be unprepared for the horizontal passing game?

Punter was the one roster hole I thought we had back in August.  Didn't realize Auburn was going to start shitting himself on 40+ yarders.

They have to have the athletes to stop it (or we have to miss blocks). Georgia has the athletes to stop it.

Hook 'em, fuck Georgia, ou sucks, let's fucking go.

Most of the issues you mentioned, short fields for Georgia, sideline passes and checkdowns instead of downfield plays are the result of two issues -- the OL and Quinn.

If the OL cleans their act up and plays with a chip on their shoulder, and Ewers plays with some poise, those problems go away.

Georgia had us scouted really well. And the pre-snap shifts caused a lot of false starts which takes us out of rythm in addition to the penalty yards. They also timed snaps with blitzing defenders around the edges really well and post snap stunts. The other thing is, our OL was backpedaling way too much in pass-pro at the snap, especially Cam Williams. They are taught to do that to a degree to manage the speed of the rush, but at some point you have to engage but Cam wasn't hardly even trying to do so until he was backed up so much it really compressed the pocket -- which didn't help Ewers' comfort in the pocket.

Sark and Co rewatched the tape as well, so they should be prepared this time. If not, they don't deserve to win.

According to the sports analysts during the Aggy game, the OL has already addressed most of those issues. Now they have to prove it against the Georgia DL.

No wonder we struggled with pass protection having 35 year-old 245 lb QB playing at right tackle.

quin needs to find the aaron rodgers path to mobility, not the lamar jackson path. he occasionally flashes it when pushing up in the pocket and he can clearly manipulate a defender in space with his arm/pump fakes. he doesn't have it while in the pocket unfortunately. his feel while processing is like nothing. not sure why its not getting coached up more or why he is flat there or even regressing.

he almost gave 4 turnovers to aggy, but luckily they dropped 2 picks.

best bet in teh CCG and playoff is hoping his ~2 turnovers are somewhat in opportune times and not scores, short fields. fingers crossed beck and his receivers to their stupid shit again as well

this is Sark's fucking kryptonite man. Is he an academic with a pen and pad making all kinds of new motions and shit, or can he be more of a football coach who just keeps taking THE FUCKING 6 YARD PLAY OVER AND OVER AGAIN UNTIL THEY STOP IT.

i also remember wisner i believe running just fine to start the game. I would like to see the pistol and some downhill runs to start. make them stay in their lanes and honor the run.

aggy, OU, georgia, all flowed like rabid animals to anything horizontal. they are all well coached defenses and makes me think they are keying up the texas O to check to that, then attack it. gives me GDGD vibes.

i still have visions of Ced Baxter getting like 8 ypc on Washington, only to have sark do a few 3 and outs without even trying to run again in that 1st half. Put the fucking script down man and look at what is in front of you. makes me insane

Is he, though? Haven't seen anything to point to this. We were about to cruise to a aggy beatdown until Quinn tried to hand the game to aggy on a platter. Luckily our defense is awesome and our run game sealed the deal. When people want to limit Quinn's exposure, especially in the redzone, that tells me all I need to know. A really good QB, you want the ball in his hands when it matters.

The first issue is we were completely out-physicaled. We were not ready for the fight AT ALL. Offensively they dominated us at the LOS. Defensively we got bullied there too. We got no pressure at all on Beck and without looking I wanna say Etienne averaged like 7 ypc. We gave up 7 sacks, 3 fumbles, and like a million pressures. They were playing man a lot and bullying our receivers downfield. Basically the same thing aggy was trying to do sat. Intimidate us and be the superior physical team. The difference is we have now run the gauntlet and found our second wind. We can run it now and we found a reliable back we can lean on. We are also fighting back. When aggy went straight thuggery we shrugged our shoulders and kept playing. We seemed to have shored up the run defense and found our stride with our pass rush. Guys like Trey Moore have started coming on lately.

I think as long as we are prepared for a fist fight we should be good. There will be turnovers. People need to be prepared for that. Georgia is a damn good football team. We just need to win the turnover battle.

Running games can be shut down too. UNLV's 250ypg rushing attack is getting demolished right now. The good news is it's tough to shut down both the running game and the passing game. Whoever our QB is, he's got to have a great game. The playoffs are where Sark earns his stripes. He led Alabama' offense to Nattys. Exciting times! Big fucking games coming up!

Some of the giving them short fields came from not just taking the damn touchback/fair catch on kickoffs or punts.  Two huge holding calls started us inside our 10.  Combine that with a 3 and out and a shitty punt and you're practically giving them points.

Our lack of punting really showed up. A couple of good ones could’ve turned the tables when the game was still in doubt.  Meanwhile the GA punter was hitting laser beams.

Need to fight them to a draw on special teams tomorrow.

There’s nothing that pisses me off more about our shitty ST (besides bolden) than trying to return kickoffs vs ~equally talented teams

Bolden has scared the crap out of me all season long with risky decisions on punt returns -- until Aggy, that is. He played it cool and hope he continues to use sound judgement going forward.

Props for speaking your mind on a sometimes neutral, sometimes positive, and sometimes negative board.

Quinn may still be gimpy, but pretty sure the last outing showed he is not entirely limited by the ankle.

Sark now realizes he needs to play the 1st half the way he played the 2nd half.  IOW, head-out-of-ass.

Wisner and DL.

So he needs to come out against Georgia like he’s protecting a lead with his defense kicking ass? Bold strategy Cotton…

Nothing would make me happier than for Quinn to come out and have a fantastic night throwing the ball. His ankle / brace is solid and the Horns chew up GA in the air. Problem is I haven't seen signs pointing in that direction in the last 4-5 weeks.

What might happen is that our Defense comes out breathing fire and absolutely dominates Georgia's Offense, maybe forcing 3-4 turnovers. That would be a sight to see, and if Quinn can keep from turning the ball over and can make enough plays with his arm to free up the running game (Arch could do the same thing),  we could find ourselves walking away with a solid victory. If Quinn's injury (injuries?) continues to be a problem however, maybe he ought to be on the bench heeling while Arch gets the reps he'll likely need for the playoffs.

I will say this again and some of you are going to say I am making excuses for Quinn. Batted balls coming from the same place are a sign of a lineman who isn't playing with good technique. In football every player watches film looking for advantages or tells in their 1v1 matchup. Linemen aren't supposed to allow a defensive lineman to disengage and jump up and bat balls. Quinn has 7 interceptions and 5 of those are batted balls, 4 of which came from the right side of the line. The 5th came from a free rusher from the nickel spot to the right. I cannot remember a single batted ball coming from the left. That's a pretty telling stat. Why are no batted balls happening left when the ball comes out the same way? Truthfully, pretty much everything bad happens on the right side of the line in pass pro.

How can any opponent be unprepared for the horizontal passing game?

It’s like you MFers never played chess. Coaches don’t run these plays thinking they are going to succeed every time. In fact, they probably know the probability of getting more than a few l, or any, yards is low. It’s about keeping the defense guessing which direction the play is going. Horizontal plays and subsequent motion moves the defense forward and towards the sidelines, opening up the middle and deep passing game for big plays. Against Georgia’s talent, a game plan of running up the middle constantly isn’t going to work, especially with the RBs on the roster.

Some of your takes are completely obnoxious.

Good god our punting is bad this year. Just comically bad honestly. This roster has no real weaknesses except punting. And it is so bad that it should probably count as 2 or 3 major weaknesses.

This is easily mitigated with a 10 yards minimum offense.

Ummm...because Ewers is right-handed and maybe a higher percentage of his throws are to the right side of the field?

Maybe some combination of both?

this is Sark's fucking kryptonite man.

The above answers the first two. I'm no football genius. I had Greg Davis PTSD with the horizontal passing attack that was only somewhat mitigated by them working more often under Sark. Still, I was all, WTF?

Davis prayed for the missed tackle to free the receiver to score. Never happened.

Sark is doing as the Fuccboi says. He is actually setting things up. He is attacking the whole field.

The below seems simplistic, but it's also illustrative.

First play... fake the pass to the flat, hand off to Wisner going the opposite way. Touchdown.

One thing I wish we wouldn't do is to try our fanciest custom play in the first few downs. We usually fuck it up for some reason. Hold off until the offense has been on the field awhile.

The failed deep shots are maddening. Like the horizontal game, you must try them to keep the whole field under attack.

It'd be nice to hit half of them. Ewers dropped a pretty one into the basket against the Aggies. He also made some risky to stupid decisions.

Quinn needs some of that mullet-haired cockiness back. He's done some great things for Texas. Today may be one of those days like he had against the Tide. Hoping so.
