2024 Playoffs Round 1: Clemson at Texas

Georgia, a team we just took to OT, beat them 34-3.  Gave up 30+ to 3 unranked teams.

The Georgia game might as well have been last season. Besides, Clemson’s defense kept them in that game for most of the first 2.5 quarters. Klubnik was really poor IIRC.

I get it. But one thing that has been consistent this year is the defense.

Come the fuck on CJ. This is some pussy shit here.

Plus, Makuba should have good intel on Klubnik and their defense for our progrum.

Well, except it wasn’t. They also played absolutely nobody after that until SCAR, and we saw the result of that. They’re improved sure, but we’ve seen what they are and I’m not intimidated by anything in particular.

Their schedule after Georgia was laughable.

App St 5-6, NC State 6-6, Stanford 3-9, FSU 2-10, Wake Forest 4-8, Virginia 5-7, Louisville 8-4, Virginia Tech 6-6, Pitt 7-5, Citadel 5-7.

The fact this Clemson team almost ended up a 5 loss team should tell you they aren't that great.

any intel on the clemson dline and lbs? seems to be the best indicator of sark's out of the box horizontal offense for dummies playbook and if we will get 0 yards per sideways expedition, or 4 yards per.

seems like OSU and Tenn in our bracket are those teams, and ducks aren't.

Well, I'm sure there will be a movie streaming on the Hallmark Channel on Saturday at 3:00 that they can watch instead of the game.

Hope it’s about a small town boy and the slick city girl who’s car broke down just as the snows settled in and she’s stuck for a week and find the true meaning of Christmas and the love she never knew existed.

/I’m 90% sure this is an actual synopsis of something my wife watched

One thing for sure…..

If we get by Clemson to play ASU the defense needs to understand you have to tackle Skattebo by the ankles.

Do not try and tackle him above the waist.

I remember when we played Pitt in the Bluebonnet Bowl back in the 80’s when they had Craig Ironhead Heyward  at running back.

He was 5-11 and 265 lbs. Talk about a bowling ball…..he was more like a fucking rhino running the ball.

I was screaming at the TV because we kept trying to tackle him up high in the first half and he was killing us by turning three yard gains into 8 yards.

Evidently my yelling from Jonestown was heard by Akers at halftime and we started to go for his ankles in the second half and he didn’t do shit.

Skattebo is the same type of runner.

First or second guy there has to go for his ankles.

"Gamer" - dude has lost plenty of games of varying importance, he just still gets sucked off by the TXHSFB honks.

Minnesota - VaTech in the Mayo Bowl is another one, as well as almost every Cal and Stanford conference game.

SMU had actually played Stanford in the Rose Bowl in 1936. But it was our 2nd meeting this season.

Georgia isn't 31 points better than Clemson.

That said - Texas will be fine. Line up and snap the football and Clemson fans are leaving DKR early.

Pretty big and physical but not very fast. SMU worked them on outside throws and speed around the edge.

Our red zone offense has to get better in the playoffs or it will be an early exit for Texas.  Too many damn mistakes on offense.  Sark has to simplify shit on offense and practice it over and over and over.  More targets to motion, and slants/digs/crossers.  Don't call any more corner routes or fades because Quinn can't hit them!!  😡

Run straight at teams and take advantage of the size and strength on our o-line.  The lateral shit with our OL pulling against jawja was just such slow developing bullshit that gave up too many negative plays.

Need much better production on 1st and 2nd downs so we can improve our 3rd down conversion rate -- third and long sucks for this Texas offense!!!

Per CJ Vogel SEC Championship:

Texas had 18 3rd down attempts:

  • 10 needed 9+ yds to convert
  • average 3rd down distance was 11.6yds
  • only 4 were 3rd and short (1-4yds)

Bulldawgs had 15 3rd down attempts...

8 were in 'short' distances (1-4yds)

Only worry for me is that Dabo has coached and won play-off games. For one of his wins I watched the ESPN coaches broadcast. They would all sit there and suggest a safe predictable call and Dabo would be unpredictable and aggressive instead. Kirby  got us twice on trick plays in critical moments in both games.

We have to much talent to have that be the difference but if we play with our food it most certainly can be the difference in the game.

Our special teams haven't been as bad as people think. While Bert sucks and our punter sucks, we don't give up big returns in the kicking game. We also don't have huge negative plays on returns.

I can honestly live with the short punts because teams don't have any return game against us. Bert is the one that needs to get his shit together.

Yea people saying Banks needs to go because of 1 bad K/P year are special. Removing his added abilities as a recruiter he’s been a solid ST coach for awhile now.

This

Our kickoffs have been spectacular.

As you mentioned most of our punts are not returned and we have had a few good returns, including Saturday.

Coverage on punts and kickoffs have been superb.

Klubnik and Ewers share some likeness - elite HS programs, highly recruited, have underachieved at the next level. Both struggle with pocket presence and are prone to dumb throws.

Ewers is a better intermediate thrower. Klubnik throws the deep ball better and is much more mobile than Ewers. Not saying a lot.

Like Ewers, Klubnik is a good QB, nothing more. He won't win / dominate any game. Pressure him, like Ewers, and things can go sideways. He can beat you with his legs so a dimension that will have to be accounted for.

Are you kidding? We beat aggy. At Pyle. At Night. Where no one ever escapes with a win.

aggy would beat Clemson at Kyle Field.

Also, several other teams on our schedule would be a coin flip with Clemson on a neutral field. Man, I don't think people have watched Clemson this year. They aren't bad but they aren't good.

They're a very mediocre football team like the aggy team we beat by double digits on the road.
