2024 Playoffs Round 1: Clemson at Texas

Clemson is physical? Maybe at times on the DL, but they’re either penetrating or getting uprooted when they play better teams.

As long as we don’t let Klubnik play outside of the pocket, particularly to the right, I’m not sure how they score TDs.
Maybe their third/fourth string RB turns out to be a big time gamer and makes this one a nail biter.

— I'm hearing wide receiver Isaiah Bond(ankle) practiced on Wednesday and might be moving from questionable to probable for No. 5 Texas in a first-ever home College Football Playoff game against No. 12 seed Clemson on Saturday (3 p.m., TNT/Max).

i repped fafo because while good news, we have the tools and technology to win this game without him and we need full bond to go all the way

Or……So long as there is no backup quarterback involved.

I believe Sark with 2 weeks will come up with more wrinkles.

Sarkisian had a week to implement an easy wrinkle against Georgia - some Manning snaps, mobility and a possible read-option, after seeing Georgia get torched in the previous week with that look. Didn't happen.

Hope you're right.

the mind of sark should have quite literally a dozen doozies in the deep cuts section of the playbook

stuff run in the bubble in spring they can dust off in a given week's practice

jump-pass / chest-pass stuff like we've seen the last couple of bowl games

Why use a package like that for a game that would be nice to have, instead of a game where your season depends on it.
Arch getting banged up by running the ball 5 times against Georgia makes him unavailable in the event that Quinn gets hurt again in the playoff.

Their fanbase thinks our defense is very overrated.  They are in for a rather rude awakening.

Yep. They will be lucky to get to 20 points.

Clemson’s offense has been bad against even just good defenses. They have been god awful against great defenses.

Georgia (10th): 3 points and 3.6 YPP

Louisville (35th): 21 points and 4.5 YPP

South Carolina (6th): 14 points, 2 turnovers and 6.1 YPP

SMU (18th): They scored 31 but 14 was off of short fields and they only averaged 4.4 YPP. And that YPP was with 3 passes over 30 yards.

Texas is first in defense per F+ and there’s a huge gap between the top 5 defenses and everyone else.

All sights are on the Clemson Tigers this week.

Texas has been on the practice field resuming their normal practice schedule with the first round of the College Football Playoff looming this weekend.

A couple of quick practice nuggets for the Longhorns.

***

– The Longhorns have practiced at 3:00 p.m. each day this week. Of course, that is the time of kickoff at DKR this Saturday for the Clemson matchup. I look back to the spring where Steve Sarkisian would switch up location and practice start time to break the monotony of practice, well this is the opposite essentially.

Texas practiced a day at the Denius Fields this week as the field at DKR underwent CFP preparations which included new paint on the turf for the first round of the Playoff.

Regardless, making sure the Longhorns are used to the lighting at the stadium and the routine of getting up for football at 3:00 p.m. were of the utmost importance.

– Steve Sarkisian mentioned this week that QB Quinn Ewers was out of the ankle brace. Take this for what it is worth, but I was told this is the healthiest Ewers has looked in a week of practice in a couple of months.

– LT Kelvin Banks still has a heavy wrap on his ankle for each practice, but was taking first team reps on Monday when we were allowed to see 10 minutes of practice and has continued to work with the top group since.

Trevor Goosby is being kept warm as you would expect.

– I did hear Isaiah Bond was starting to get back into the practice action. Bond was sidelined Monday with his ankle issue that occurred during the SEC Championship Game. Bond is attempting to give it a go against Clemson, but I cannot sit here for certain and tell you he will be a large part of the game plan given the play of Matthew Golden and DeAndre Moore, and also the limitations of the ankle itself.

– Of the transfer portal entrants, it remains to be just Tia Savea and Justice Finkley who are on the field for the Longhorns in practice so far this week.

Clemson YouTubers break down how Clemson wins this game;

Key takeaways:

  • Texas is terrible at running the football. They will easily shut down our run. (with one of the P5's worst run defenses, lol)
  • Don't be fooled by Texas motion - stay disciplined (as opposed to teams that prefer to play a completely disorganized, make-it-up on the fly strategy)
  • TJ Parker will easily have around 6 or 7 sacks, whomever he is
  • Texas has no film on Clemson's offensive replacement players so they should have big games (I have to admit that is an original take)
  • Texas hasn't faced a QB who can run like Cade Klubnik and he will have a big game on designed runs
  • Texas hasn't played a team as physical as Clemson so the refs need to LET THEM PLAY
  • Clemson has all the advantages and will win a close one

how’s this gonna be close if Clemson has all of those advantages?

The only one that might make sense is the 4th one if Hill knocks Klubnick out of the game. But does a backup RB run through a different hole or something on the same play call as the starter???

Yes, Clemson can win this game. They can win if Texas gifts them multiple turnovers, Texas continues to put themselves in 3rd and long because of penalties, the ref's decide to screw Texas. Any combination of those could screw Texas, but it won't be because of those stupid shit reasons listed.

Clemson is a top 5 team in the country at forcing turnovers (three behind Texas). That's what scares me the most. We're a very turnover prone team. Texas has to keep the ball and convert drives into points moreso than they've done in more than a month to win. The offense has sucked ass since Florida, and that game needs an asterisk since they were missing so many players.

No big deal but the Florida team wasn’t missing a bunch of players that weren’t already missing - the qb was the only one different that affected the game. In fact I think they had a few guys back that weren’t already missing to that point - carry on

Yeah despite the pretty large spread I keep seeing person after person, and podcast after podcast, talk about THIS is the upset that's going to happen.

That Texas will turn that ball over and that's all it takes.

Except for the fact Texas, even with turnovers, moves the ball up and down the field, and the defense is still legit.  So I don't see how Clemson scores 24 or more that'll be needed to beat texas.

Not worried about the defense at all. The offense and st is our issue so if we decide to punt we need to be at least at mid field, no Quinn turnovers would be a gift for Christmas, and if we can somehow muster up 24 points we will win. I got it 24-10 Texas.

I was definitely in that camp. Then I saw some of  IT’s Clemson review. Waddlington was talking about how the biggest issue for Clemson is busting coverages. they tend to play a lot of man in the secondary. Given their youth it may be tough to put new stuff to confuse Quinn, because it may end up confusing the secondary more. I’ll assume he is correct there. IF Clemson has to be generic vs Texas. I at least like Texas’s chances to put up pts in the opening script and the 1st half

I was assuming and still hoping something like this would / will be the first thing Arch does in the Red Zone. I don't care whether he jumps or pushes it, or flips it or tosses it, I want to see him headed for the line, drawing all thirteen defenders and hit Gunnar or Wingo behind errybody. 1st and goal, worst case. Now run the exact same thing. I see DC's shitting their shorts.

Clemson needs to keep their airplane engines going because after 60 mins they'll be on their way home.

See if you can do a shot of tequila every time we throw the ball behind the line of scrimmage. The goal is not to throw up before the end of the game. I don't think most of you could make it.

Or just try not to die

So we sit Blue and Gibson for the game. Now we're cooking with Sarin

Mafah has an injured shoulder that needs surgery after the season. One good pop from Hill, Simmons, or Lefau and he's done for the game. Dabo is either an idiot who's playing a guy who needs surgery on a shoulder where he plays a position that he literally has to use his shoulder, or...no, Dabo is a moron.
