Eight or Nine Game SEC Schedule

The CCG is dumb unless there are divisions. And there are none.

I don’t care if there are 8 or 9 conference games, but I want to play a top tier non-conference home/away every year. Non-negotiable. Need a game as high as Ohio St, USC or Michigan but not lower than a Wisconsin, Stanford, or Nebraska. It just adds so much to the excitement for the season.

As for the minnow games, you need at least 3 of them to get young guys into games and work on concepts. They should not occur in November. That’s always been silly.

Playing 17 games at the college level is a lot. Too much. I remember being physically destroyed at the end of my 11 game high school schedule. Mentally too. Luckily I had a cheerleader gf who took good care of my “spirit”. Here’s to you, Heather, wherever you are.

This. SEC CCG was a rematch. B1G was almost a rematch.

There were a lot of scenarios where the SEC CCG could have been a rematch between Texas-aggy, Bama-Georgia, etc.  So fucking dumb.

If they want to keep 8, then any FCS game shouldn't count as a game to the committee.

9 scheduled conference games.  Anything less than 9 is a loss.

Need consistency across all conferences:  CCG or no.  Just be the same across the board.

I was wondering how quickly the novelty of playing SEC shit programs would wear off and be replaced by the realization that it's the same as shit Big 12 programs every home schedule except in different uniforms with even shittier visiting fans.

Have to admit, 3 months was faster than I figured.

The difference is the premier Big 12 programs were basically us and OU.  Yes, occasionally we got some highly ranked Big 12 team like OKST, ISU, KSU, Baylor, TCU, but they were just annoying as fuck to play, period. Not even rivals. And most of them were "good" only when we were bad.

We always met the only other program on the same prestige footing as us away from home.

Texas has hosted Georgia in year 1 and will eventually get to host Bama (as a conference foe), Ole Miss, Tenn and LSU.  And getting to host rivalry games again against Arky and aggy.

The shit will always be the shit, but the cream of the conference will get to be seen by UT fans at DKR, finally.  The teams that aren't just good because Texas sucked, but good in their own right.

Stanford has been awful now for 6 seasons. I'm not sure they ever really turn it back around to make that game worth scheduling.

But I get what you mean - at least one fun OOC blue-blood or T2 every year.

I think the visiting fans thing is very case-by-case. Let's not pretend like Tech and TCU weren't part of the last iteration of the B12.

I remember the Bama fans being fine in '22. I didn't have any problems with the UK fans this year. I didn't hear about anyone having problems with the UF fans.

Arky, Georgia, aggy? Well, sure.

4. SMU (103)

5. Indiana (102)

6. Notre Dame (101)

8. Georgia (97* could drop a spot if Army beats Navy)

9. Arizona State (94*)

10 - TIE. Ohio State (90*)

12 - TIE*. Tennessee (89*)

12 - TIE*. Army (89 - TBD)

14. Miami (87*** could rise a spot if Navy beats Army)

15. Clemson (80)

16. Alabama (77)

17. South Carolina (76)

18. Ole Miss (74)

This could use some tweaks, but it's reasonably fair. An undefeated P4 team should have the most points by far. No points are deducted from Penn State, SMU, Texas, or UNLV for losing their CCGs, but bonus points are awarded to Army, Boise, Oregon, Georgia, Clemson, and Arizona State for winning theirs.

I think it would also be cool and chaotic for teams who qualify for CFP to have the OPTION to swap places with any team that it won H2H series against (this year, that would have allowed:

  • Clemson to avoid Texas in Round 1 and travel to Happy Valley (assuming Ohio State didn't exercise its option against Penn State, in which case Clemson goes to Columbus)
  • Ohio State to move up to #6 and force Penn State to host Tennessee instead of SMU, setting up Tenn at Penn State and SMU at Ohio State
  • Ohio State to strategically move down to #10 (forfeiting home field) to visit South Bend, setting up Buckeyes at Domers and the Vols travel to Bloomington
  • Georgia could also (in theory, and it would make zero sense) sub in for #5 Texas or #9 Tennessee.

Coaches and ADs would get a certain number of hours to exercise or decline their swap options. This would create greater in-season incentives to win games, especially big OOC games like Ore-Boise, and in a CCG rematch (Tex/UGA and Boise/UNLV come to mind) a team that lost in the regular season could strip the winner of the swap option they'd won.

It would give the talking heads almost too much to discuss.

I think all of these can be true…

1. There is a “loss bias” that causes CFP members and poll voters to assume a two loss ACC or B12 team is comparable or better than a three loss SEC team.
2. The SEC has more teams that are a threat to beat a really good team than the ACC, B12 and even B1G, and so a three loss SEC team like South Carolina is probably better than a two loss ACC team like SMU or a two loss B12 team like BYU.
3. The SEC should drop FCS teams and play a nine game league schedule, allowing a regular intra conference rotation and multiple annual rivals.

I think the solution can come in 2026. The SEC agrees to a nine game league schedule, ESPN agrees to a bigger media payout and the CFP expands to 14 teams with the SEC guaranteed four spots.

I have no issue with all 3 SEC teams being behind SMU. SMU lost by a last second FG and played 2 P4 teams in their OOC, losing to one of them who went on to win 10 games. Ole Miss lost to two bad SEC teams, Florida and Kentucky. South Carolina got destroyed by Ole Miss 27-3 then they lost to Alabama. Then Alabama loses horribly to OU, 24-3. If you can't muster more than a FG against an opponent, that tells me you're not a playoff team. South Carolina had probably the best case given how great they played the final 6 games of the season but then you're tossing out 2 head to head losses. Frankly, if you can't be over 10 wins then you only should be in if you win the conference championship like Clemson did.

Guaranteeing multiple bids to a conference is so stupid and anti-competitive that I'm sure it will happen.

For fuck's sake if Ole Miss beats shitass Kentucky OR Alabama beats mediocre Oklahoma OR Alabama beats mediocre Vanderbilt OR Ole Miss beats mediocre Florida OR South Carolina doesn't get completely fucked by the refs against LSU then the SEC gets 4 teams in. Instead of rigging the playoff maybe have your teams not blow 4 easy chances and also maybe don't try to predict what teams will be good and fuck yourself by influencing an early game.

Fundamentally there is never going to be a way to ensure that all qualifying teams took equally difficult paths to the playoff. Some teams will have had it easier than others, and other teams would have qualified if their paths had been as easy as the path that a qualifying team had, but this is true in literally every competition where the goal is a championship to be earned through postseason play. There's weak divisions in the NFL and NBA, there's groups of death in the World Cup, there's whatever UIL district the Friday Night Lights team played in back in 1987, and there's whatever UIL district allows a team that went 0-10 to make the playoffs and lose by 80+ points.

Knowing all this, I still think CFB is still at an exciting crossroads, because for the first time we can say that any team that completes the season undefeated has a chance to compete for a national championship. Army would be in the playoffs if it had defeated Notre Dame.

That's unprecedented, and I appreciate it. We can still do better.

My hope is that we move away from relying on committees and computers and instead formulate an objective, fairer way to determine which teams qualify for the postseason tournament. I'm okay with using committees and computers to seed the qualifiers after they've qualified, and I think there are some cool ways to reward teams for having scoreboard over other playoff teams (like swap options), but other than for seeding purposes I don't like committees. In fact, I have my doubts that SMU would have qualified if it were a school from outside DFW, where the committee convenes.

We're definitely headed in the right direction though.

that makes no sense in reality. in the sec years before texas and oklahoma joined in which the conference had 14 teams, the aggies played georgia 1 time total. putting aside the cross division rival matchups with south carolina (which they played 10 times), they played georgia and kentucky 1 time. they played tennessee and vanderbilt 3 times, florida and missouri 4 times. how in the world could that be called a rotational system?

Probably you are counting the 2011 and 2012 bridge schedules with your numbers as well as additional games added in 2020 and that the rotation ended 2 years early because of expanding to 16.

Florida, like Georgia, was scheduled to play A&M just twice during the 2014-2025 rotation.  They played in 2017 and 2022. A&M was also added as a bridge schedule game in 2012 before the rotation was put into place and as one of the two additional games added on top of the rotation in 2020 to go to a 10 game schedule

Georgia was scheduled to play A&M in 2019 and 2024. They only played 1 time because the rotation was ended 2 years early.

A 12 year rotation to play just 2 times sucks no matter how you slice it. UGA/A&M just stands out because the rotation ended 2 years early plus they never were added during the years pre- or post-rotation or COVID.

One reason I really want us to go to a 9 game 3/6 rotation.

Well I watched them play us and I don't think Lagway is that huge of a factor given we would've utterly dominated him as well. Ole Miss lost that game because Dart was Dart and Lane always has those stupid games in him.

And yes, I know Clemson was beaten by South Carolina. That had no say in why South Carolina didn't get into the playoff over Clemson or wouldn't have gotten in if SMU had won.

Sagarin says Florida was the 20th best team in the country, playing the fifth toughest schedule. Florida played four top 10 Sagarin teams, and went 1-3. Florida was a good team with a ridiculous schedule. Playing at home, Ole Miss is just a small underdog.

SMU went 0-0 against top 10 teams, and 1-2 against top 30. Clemson went 1-1 against top 10, and 1-3 against top 30.

Correct.    Of course Bama will point out Mercer is fairly decent FCS team.   But still…..

Disagree.

I'm not a fan of the ccg’s for a lot of the reasons above but Texas should not have won the conference championship for having only one loss and not playing Tenn, Bama, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Mizzou or Ole Miss

results and the final sec rank of our sec opponents:

L2, W6, W10, W11, W12, W13, W15, W16

We’d (rightfully so) be losing our shit if someone played that schedule and was given the conference championship while we beat that team and had to play two additional teams in the top half of the conference

W1, W3, L4, L8, W10, W14, W15, W16

Sure but the options were SEC, Big 10, ACC, or PAC12 (RIP). We weren't staying in the Big 12. You can say the same for all of those conferences. For every Michigan, Ohio State, Clemson, Florida State, USC, and Oregon there's a Purdue, Rutgers, Wake Forest, Boston College, Washington State, or Arizona that would've been meh to play every few years. There's a lot of meh in every conference.

Army didn't just lose to Notre Dame, they got destroyed. That is why they weren't in the playoffs. We don't know the world where Army lost to Notre Dame in overtime or something. They might have made it in if that had happened, we don't know.

Josh Pate pointed out that hes heard some backend convos amongst Big 10 and SEC folks that if those 2 conf get promised 4 teams each in say a 16 team playoff... they are looking to kill the conf championship game, but giving value to the TV partners by having two play-in games for the 3rd and 4th seeds of the conf.

in other words, standard tie-breakers for the conference champion and 2nd place.  Those 2 teams get an automatic bid to the CFP.   then the conf regular season 3rd team plays the conf reg season 6th team to earn a spot. Same with the 4th/5th teams playing each other.

that way there are 2 final end of year play in games ESPN CBS/Fox  can broadcast for the 2 big conf, plus the other conferences having a CCG to determine who gets an auto-bid (but obviously not a guaranteed bye if those still even exist).

College playoffs require a subjective element. There are too many teams with wildly different schedules for a pro sports objective type playoffs.

Or regional conferences that each determine their own champion with any notion of a national champion left up for fun debate.  Nah, that would never work.

Say what now?  So a fairer objective formula that will be calculated only by a bunch of guys using pencil and paper?  Sounds cool, where do I sign up to be one of those guys?

I think a point system makes the most sense, as long as it doesn't too heavily weigh the preseason rankings. I'm hesitant to use the concept of "strength of schedule" because I believe it suffers too much from a feedback loop, but I acknowledge that teams whose SOS is in a top percentile should get a bonus of some kind, which I tried to do with the 1-25, 26-50, 51-75 cutoffs. It's tweakable.

I also hesitate to weigh margins of victory too much. Often it says more about flow of the game than it says the relative strengths of the two teams.

Eight scheduled conference games, but with a flex week on Championship Saturday.

Top 2 teams go to the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta.  Both teams get an automatic bid to the playoffs.  Then the 3rd place team plays at home against the 6th place team; the 4th place team plays at home against the 5th place team--winner gets an auto bid.

This structure may already be in the works.

And then for funsies--have all the other teams play.  The 8th team at the 7th team, and so on.

The 16 at 15 game is to avoid relegation to the ACC.

This point system would yield rankings of:

  Reveal hidden contents

1. Oregon (124)

2. Texas (107)

3. Penn State (106)

4. SMU (103)

5. Indiana (102)

6. Notre Dame (101)

7. Boise (98** could be tied with Army if it beats Navy)

8. Georgia (97* could drop a spot if Army beats Navy)

9. Arizona State (94*)

10 - TIE. BYU (90*)

It would give the talking heads almost too much to discuss.

i modeled this a few years ago will see if i can find it

It seems obvious to just split into east/west divisions along the Mississippi/Alabama border. They'd be about as close to even as you could hope for, and all the major rivalries would stay intact. 7 divisional games and 2 cross divisional, so you play everyone every 4 years. Not perfect, but there is no perfect solution with super conferences.

I don't expect any conference to stay 16 teams in size. I can easily see Clemson and FSU joining.

I was wondering how quickly the novelty of playing SEC shit programs would wear off and be replaced by the realization that it's the same as shit Big 12 programs every home schedule except in different uniforms with even shittier visiting fans.

Have to admit, 3 months was faster than I figured.

Florida > tech

Arkansas > Baylor

Kentucky > TCU

Vandy > Houston/cinci

Mississippi state > Okie lite

Georgia > all of em

aggy more fun to play than k state or Iowa state or any of em

especially now they’ve watered down the conference so bad, the SEC is just better every week.
