I'm curious what sport(s) he ended up doing in college, and where did he go (if you care to disclose)?  10.4 sec 100 m is a high D1 T&F number, and would be close to medaling in the SEC.

DM sent.  He is well aware of the track times, etc.  It is his first love.

We get wrapped up in the 4* and 5* that we forget that they are all pretty much 50/50.

One bored Sunday I went back thru all the 4 and 5 star stats over many years and 4* was a 50/50 hit rate. 5* was 75%.

We're mighty thin there, though.  I don't know anything about Niblack's relationship with Sark, but it seems likely he'd get more action next year.

I’m glad he’s gone. Name sounds too much like nickelback

of the top 7 favorites - Ohio State, Alabama, Oregon, ND have a big question mark at QB as of right now.   Manning, Stockton and Allar are already set as starting QBs for the other 3.

Ohio State and ND could both be losing their DCs (to OU and the NFL, respectively).

Ohio St, Alabama and Oregon have the same heir apparent situation as we do we are just more familiar with Arch.

You assume. Texas won’t be shopping in the spring for a QB. All of those schools still could. We only have actual games started by Arch, versus those 3

Genuinely, why would Texas spend a cent of NIL money on a Jared Zeno-type QB?

You aren't getting someone like even a Chandler Morris or Devin Brown or Alex Orji or TJ Finley or even Parker Stone (lol) - they all want to play.

If the goal is to go get some rando old QB to basically come in then flip to a GA after next year, and that guy plays a single meaningful snap next year Texas is already turbo fucked and you might as well play Owens.

. . . and Owens was pretty impressive in the spring game.  I'm not suggesting that would translate to live fire in the fall, but I don't think we're desperate, either.

He wasn’t arguing for another QB if you reread it.

There has been zero discussion around needing NIL money for another QB in the spring portal. I’m guessing they feel fine there, given that.

DT, WR, IOL, PK and RB could all get attention. DT for sure.

Thank you.  Texas, Georgia and PSU will NOT be portal shopping a spring QB - they know what they have, with QBs who have actual in-game reps as starters.

Ohio State, Oregon, Notre Dame, Bama - could easily see all of them grab a spring portal QB.  So I am saying those 4 are not "settled" on a QB yet in the way the other 3 are.

Oregon does not Dante Moore, but he wasn't very good at UCLA in his one year.

Maybe he's developed tremendously in the past year, but I think starting Dante Moore could be a disaster for Oregon next year. He has very limited mobility compared to Nix/Gabriel and looked terrible, even by freshman QB standards, at UCLA. He has a subpar arm but nice touch in the short game, which at least is a good fit in the Oregon offense. It will be fun to monitor the post-spring QB market from the sidelines, as I think you'll see some desperation from at least two of the schools you mention.

That's a room with talent, but it's a completely unproven room and the biggest question mark on the team IMO outside of "Can Arch be the man?"  This position group is even more unproven and inexperienced than the TE group at the start of the '24 season, which is saying something.  Fingers crossed that someone like Washington can step up and be something of a revelation like Helm was this past season, but at this point we really don't know if any of these guys will be able to perform (esp. in terms of run blocking) at an acceptable level.

DT/NT is the biggest question mark. Relying on 2 transfers, neither of whom were great at Purdue/UNC, will likely be a big step back from the last 3 years. The incoming freshman class will be elite down the line, but will need at least a year for S&C before being SEC ready.

We're getting two more DT transfers, FYI. Big spring window coming.

Will Austin Novosad see the field up there?

If you mean Shaw and Brevard, those were the 2 I was talking about. Shaw was a blue chip that hasn't developed well, issue could have been Mack's staff/scheme so potential may still be there. And Brevard is a 0/1 tech, so he won't be an every down player. Only other returning player is January. Bo Davis really fucked up interior DL recruiting in 2022 & 2023, amazing how Baker came in and immediately pulled the best class in the country

Umm, it wasn’t Baker that made it happen.  January played in the Ohio State game btw.  I think we will be okay.  The early returns on Terry is that he will play and he will play early.

Because these are their returning starters

WR1 WR3 RG FS

They might also get back off WLB1 and CB2, aside from that everyone is gone. And they'll be starting a true sophomore at QB with 12 career pass attempts

This. Owens will be a very servicable back up. The kids is much more polished than these one dimension washed QB's. Orji is awful.

No position is more important than QB. Julian Sayin has 5 completions on 12 career attempts.

Lanning hasn't bothered to develop a QB, yet. I doubt he starts next year. Moore had surprisingly little work this year for an undefeated regular season team, only 8 passes attempted across 4 games.

Downs is a technically sound Safety. He’s not the best player returning on defense in college football. The guy was not a disruptive player in numerous games and had a whopping 2 picks for 7 yards and .5 sacks in 2024.

Texas has two defensive players returning that were far more disruptive last year alone.

I’d take Downs in a heartbeat, but #1 in all of CFB is going too far.

Hills is also returning. They like him as a developmental player that will contribute in the rotation in the future, albeit not necessarily in 2025. He’s worth actually counting as a returner though.

As to the guys Texas landed, they would have both been pushing to be in the rotation this past year. Shaw lost a bunch of weight and got serious and had a decent year. If he stays on the trajectory he’s on for a contract year, he’s not just helpful but an asset. They prioritized Brevard, so that should tell us something.

I am not as bullish on landing two DTs in the spring portal as others are, but they’re going to try and there is dry powder.

Is this supposed to be the Texas off-season thread? I hope Texas is using the same training system as Jayden Daniels. Explains a lot about his performance at LSU and in the NFL so far.

FCB...  Damn another injury for Vasek 😬

Report: Texas edge Colton Vasek to undergo shoulder surgery

Jan 26, 2025

Texas Longhorns rising redshirt sophomore edge Colton Vasek is set to undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder, according to a Sunday report from Fuck Chip Brown of Horns247.

It’s not a longterm physical setback for the 6’5, 260-pounder, who played with a brace on his shoulder in 2024, but it is another one for Vasek following a back injury that kept him from seeing the field as a true freshman in 2023.

Vasek arrived on the Forty Acres from Austin Westlake as a member of the 2023 recruiting class after a high-profile flip from Oklahoma to Texas, an important head-to-head win for the Longhorns over their Red River rival. In the 247Sports Composite rankings, Vasek was a top-100 prospect nationally and the No. 16 edge and brought a championship pedigree to the Texas program by winning back-to-back state titles while 71 tackles with 53 solo stops, seven tackles for loss, 14 sacks, 19 pressures, one fumble recovery, and one forced fumble as a senior.

The back injury slowed down Vasek’s development, but he did emerge as a fringe rotation player as a redshirt freshman, playing 81 snaps in 10 games on special teams on the kickoff return, punt return, and punt coverage units, as well as one snap on the field-goal block team, and 65 snaps in seven games on defense, primarily in blowouts, although Vasek did play six snaps in the Cotton Bowl loss to Ohio State.

On defense, Vasek recorded seven tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, six total pressures, and two defensive stops, flashing the potential that made him such a coveted recruit.

With Barryn Sorrell exhausting his eligibility as the starting Jack end for Texas and Justice Finkley transferring to Kansas, Vasek projects as the primary backup for his high school teammate, rising senior Ethan Burke. Early enrollee Lance Jackson is also expected to compete for playing time at the position.

Yeah, DL is going to be fine. I don't think we will see much of a drop-off. January will be improved. We will probably bring in the tOSU guy and Shaw seems to have turned a corner. Brevard is a zero technique and will play situationally. We will miss Norton, Collins, and Broughton but those guys aren't as irreplaceable as Sweat and Murphy were. The biggest issue is that we have gotten nothing out of DL recruiting in 2022 and 2023.

Personally, my concerns are at corner, interior OL, WR and TE. Considering we had an inconsistent offense last year, the loss of talent at WR, TE, and the offensive line is troublesome.
