Yeah, DL is going to be fine. I don't think we will see much of a drop-off. January will be improved. We will probably bring in the tOSU guy and Shaw seems to have turned a corner. Brevard is a zero technique and will play situationally. We will miss Norton, Collins, and Broughton but those guys aren't as irreplaceable as Sweat and Murphy were. The biggest issue is that we have gotten nothing out of DL recruiting in 2022 and 2023.

Personally, my concerns are at corner, interior OL, WR and TE. Considering we had an inconsistent offense last year, the loss of talent at WR, TE, and the offensive line is troublesome.

Dt has to be a concern. PFF had Collins had a high PFF grade coming into 2024 season, so there was at least 1 known. He played well and is likely a day 2 guy. Broughton flipped the switch and it going to be drafted. Both of those guys were 5 year players. Texas found depth in the portal. This year Shaw and Brevard set the floor. Texas is going to be reliant on under-classmen to step-up and set the ceiling. There is talent there, but you never know when the light will go on. I think they will flash, but can they be consistent vs the run?

We are probably going to add two more DTs from the portal.

I am sure they want to add 2 more, but that is not a given. It is a very hard position to add. Texas has been forced to bring in portal DTs but has not been forced to start them. This is a position where recruiting is of the utmost importance. There are very few high-end DTs in the portal. The ones you do find generally come with baggage and a high price. I have not delved into it, but I would guess DT is one of the worst portal positions for value. The best is probably WR.

Don't worry! Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant are going to enter in the second portal!

I would say Collins was the one that flipped the switch. He showed flashes of what he could do, but there wasn’t any consistency. Broughton on the other hand was pure development from year to year.

I think people under-appreciated how well he played in 2023. He was very good in limited time. He was being mentioned in the media prior to the season. The question was can he do it with start snaps. There was speculation that Broughton could get buried on the depth chart in the summer.

I don’t think we did but rather what he showed this year shouldn’t have been done in year five. If Collins would’ve played consistently at the level he did this year in previous years, then he could have been gone by his junior year. And I honestly don’t remember seeing a lot of speculation that Broughton could get buried on the depth chart but that could just be me not thinking clearly. I thought the off-season discussion around Broughton was if he could continue taking the next step in his development or would he plateau.

Collins had a lot of talent in front of him. Murphy and Sweat were great in 2024. That is an example of how you would love every position to look.

It's wild looking back at 22 interior. 6 guys on that roster are NFL guys or will be NFL guys.

this run has been pretty insane. I think last year Sweat and Murphy were the top 2 rated DTs by PFF

this year Broughton and Collins were top 5

Well, actually, Collins was before Murphy/Sorrell etc but got jumped. Look, I’m not saying that we weren’t uber talented on the D line last year and the depth carried over to this year. I just made a point that I thought your description of Collins and Broughton should’ve been switched in my opinion. During Collins’ time here, there never was a point where he felt entirely useless. He always showed flashes of what he could become consistently. While Broughton on the other hand had a long way to go to be developed into what he is now. They were stretches where he was a complete liability on the field.

Sweat was 2019. Collins 2020. Murphy jumped him and was a 1st round pick.

I agree about the useless. My point was Collins always flashed. He was consistent in 2023 in limited snaps. In 2024 he proved he could be consistent with starter snaps. Broughton really struggled vs the run most of his career. He played too high. I said he flipped the switch, because I dont think even the most delusional Texas fan would have dreamed he would have the 5th highest grade among all DTs this year. Somehow we are arguing and saying basically the same thing. Just another day on Surly.

My guy, I literally said Collins flashed but wasn’t consistent enough in my first response to you. It was my point the entire time. And you’re right with Broughton, which was what I was saying the entire time about him being developed. The new D line coach being more technical with hand placement played a big factor in Broughton taking the next step in his development. One guy was on a more developmental path, and the other we were all waiting for him to play up to his potential.

FCB...  Damn another injury for Vasek 😬

Report: Texas edge Colton Vasek to undergo shoulder surgery

Jan 26, 2025

Texas Longhorns rising redshirt sophomore edge Colton Vasek is set to undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder, according to a Sunday report from Fuck Chip Brown of Horns247.

It’s not a longterm physical setback for the 6’5, 260-pounder, who played with a brace on his shoulder in 2024, but it is another one for Vasek following a back injury that kept him from seeing the field as a true freshman in 2023.

Vasek arrived on the Forty Acres from Austin Westlake as a member of the 2023 recruiting class after a high-profile flip from Oklahoma to Texas, an important head-to-head win for the Longhorns over their Red River rival. In the 247Sports Composite rankings, Vasek was a top-100 prospect nationally and the No. 16 edge and brought a championship pedigree to the Texas program by winning back-to-back state titles while 71 tackles with 53 solo stops, seven tackles for loss, 14 sacks, 19 pressures, one fumble recovery, and one forced fumble as a senior.

The back injury slowed down Vasek’s development, but he did emerge as a fringe rotation player as a redshirt freshman, playing 81 snaps in 10 games on special teams on the kickoff return, punt return, and punt coverage units, as well as one snap on the field-goal block team, and 65 snaps in seven games on defense, primarily in blowouts, although Vasek did play six snaps in the Cotton Bowl loss to Ohio State.

On defense, Vasek recorded seven tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, six total pressures, and two defensive stops, flashing the potential that made him such a coveted recruit.

With Barryn Sorrell exhausting his eligibility as the starting Jack end for Texas and Justice Finkley transferring to Kansas, Vasek projects as the primary backup for his high school teammate, rising senior Ethan Burke. Early enrollee Lance Jackson is also expected to compete for playing time at the position.

Thats a 4-5 month rehab if I remember from a local HS kid a few years ago. Should be good come August.

New blood is what we need. It sucks to lose Barron, but Kobe Black will be a stud. Arch will be a major upgrade. Our RB room will be awesome with Baxter, Wisner, Gibson, Simon (who is a star in the making), and Stewart.

Offensive Line should be adequate, but we have Goosby, who has shown he can be a force, Baker should do well (according to sources from Bobby and Gerry), we have Campbell back, and Neto will finally get his chance. Cruz will probably take over for Majors, but not sure how well he'll do. I do worry about Hutson, but maybe being older has grown up and understand his weakness and address it. We shall see.

WR's should be dope with Wingo as WR1, Moore as WR2, Butler coming in, and one or both of the frosh are too talented to keep off the field. Both Lockett and Ffrench will see the field early and often

Defense will be in great hands with Brevard and Shaw (Baker will do wonders), Terry will see the field, and if we land the OSU transfer we will be bad mf'ers. Edge is filthy with Simmons and Moore, Burke, Vasek, Orogbo, and Lance Jackson who can be moved from Edge to inside.

DBs will mostly be new, but we still have Taafe, Gilbeau who should take a step forward. Manny Muhammad will be back, Jelani Mcdonald is a force to be reckoned with. Filsame should take a step forward, same with JJR. We're in good hands, guys.

These guys don't really play the same position fyi. Burke/Vasek/Jackson are primarily run stoppers first, traditional 5 techs strong enough to fight off tackles/TE's to set the edge while having the ability to stand up. Moore is the true hybrid. Simmons is a pass rush specialist, but that likely changes as he gets stronger over time. Vasek really wouldn't have had much of a role this year with Jackson(if he's as good as scouting says) enrolling early and Burke still around

Vasek won’t have much of a role because a true freshman is going to cast him aside even if Vasek is healthy, huh?

Okay, then.

Pretty much. Vasek hasnt done anything except be hurt.   Dont want to lose him, but he needs to eat himself into  a DT role or he will get passed by with the incoming FR we have.  Hate it for the kid but the best ability is availability and another surgery takes him out of spring and sets him back again.

When he's healthy, he's shown flashes of what he can do. Unfortunately, he can't stay  healthy, even in summer when he's rested. He's like Ewers, but an edge. But damn if he could stay healthy and do what he's shown, we would be set.

A true freshman that's rated #1 at his position in the country? How did Simmons do last year

Vasek was highly rated out of HS and coveted by big time programs. When healthy, he has put in quality snaps.

Jackson is going to be great, but the whole thing where people on the football board compare the guy to Simmons is already getting old. Simmons was billed as a generational talent as a pass rusher.  Jackson looks great, but generational talent isn’t his projection.

DFW HS coaches compared Simmons to Myles Garrett as a prospect/pass rusher saying he's the best they've seen since. His freshmen season is rare and up there with guys like Joey Bosa, Jadaveon Clowney, Garrett, and Suggs.

Hopefully Vasek can shake the injuries and be productive consistently because he's played well in his snaps.

Without going into details and I’ve avoided this being a discussion, but if we’re all around in about 5 years, maybe I will tell the tale of landing Simmons. In the meantime, folks had to be convinced that Texas could not lose this recruitment. “Sure thing” recruits are extremely rare. People put their names on it is with him and thankfully Texas was able to make it all happen.

This year, he’s going to be one of the highest paid non-QBs in CFB.

I'd love to think we are going to have a 2nd Simmons on the field. That would be a lot to ask and very expensive to hold on to for more than one year, if it turns out to be true.

Lance Jackson is a ride or die guy. He’s like Arch Manning or JT Sanders. If he doesn’t think he’s getting fucked, he wants to be a star at Texas as much as anything. He could have tried to twist Texas during his recruiting cycle and didn’t do so. He’s not a schmuck, but he’s not a mercenary.

While it is a good idea not to take anything for granted, it’s okay to take comfort in terms of where Texas is in every way regarding NIL compared to the field. That doesn’t guarantee any single player, but I’d rather be us than “them.”

Just read the scouting and pay attention to the adjectives. They're paid for a reason, and despite what people may believe, get the physicals right close to 100% of the time

Quote

“First off the bus” prospect who pairs outstanding size, athleticism and effort level to be one of the top EDGE prospects in the 2025 cycle. Measured in at 6-foot-5.25, 270 pounds at the On3 Elite Series prior to his senior season. Has plus length with 34-inch arms to go with 10-inch hands. Excellent weight distribution throughout his frame and looks to be a lean 270. Dominant off the edge as a senior. Shows high level initial quickness. Continued to add flexibility as a senior. Dips his shoulder and bends the edge very well for such a big defensive end. Runs the hoop and finishes behind the line of scrimmage at a high rate. Length shows up in implementing a straight arm move. Has the capability to walk offensive tackles back to the quarterback with speed-to-power. An effective edge setter with his size and strength. Plays with a high effort level on defense. Shows his athleticism as a tight end, with the ability to stretch the seam. Physical as a blocker. Bigger than most EDGE prospects, opening up the possibility that he could outgrow the position. Will benefit from full-time focus on defense once he gets to college. Physical traits and play personality translate to all levels and point to a high upside as a potential early NFL Draft pick.

Quote

Productive, polished pass rusher for perennial Texas powerhouse program Austin Westlake. Stands in at a filled out 6-foot-5, 225 pounds. Possesses average length for an edge rusher despite his height with 32.5-inch arms. Natural pass rusher with a wide array of pass rush moves. Burst and get off are solid coming off the line of scrimmage. Strong at the point of attack. Does an excellent job using his hands to stack and shed in the run game. Much more power than you would think for his size. High floor prospect who will be a significant role player at the next level and has a chance to become a draft pick if he can add quality mass to his frame and maintain his athleticism.

One of these players is a tweener/project, which means limited upside given they were already highly developed coming out of Westlake. The other has elite traits that translate to the NFL level. Vasek's injury issues are likely the result of his frame just not being able to hold up at the position his skillset was best suited beyond the HS level, muscle mass doesn't change skeletal structure

Thanks for the education on how to read $9.95er scouting reports. I’m new at this.

I’m not going to die on the Vasek hill. He’s not a tweener at 6’5”, 225 for Edge in college, though. And that’s also not causing the guy to be made of glass. He may not work out at Texas, but that shit is comical.

Please, elaborate what these injuries are, how he got them, and why they are ultimately tied to his frame's inability to hold up in the college game.

Surely you have specific information and insight into the injuries than what is publicly available - otherwise you are grasping at data points and trying to cram them into a predetermined narrative you've formed based on some 9.95'er scouting reports.  Do we need to pull up high school scouting reports for 5 star busts?  For 3 star success stories?  Nobody is saying such reports don't have a place, but you are making firm, sweeping conclusions based on conjecture.

FWIW, I like both Vasek and Jackson.  Don't sleep on Umeozulu as well.  It is a deep and talented room, and if Jackson emerges it'll be a pleasant surprise.

Vasek had something like a 30-35% pressure rate. He has been good when he is on the field, that is also his issue. The best ability is availability and that is what he struggles with
