Directed by Alex Garland, as his follow-up project to Ex Machina, which is a masterpiece, IMO.

I love SciFi in general and am very tolerant of it from a critique standpoint, so I'm not a harsh judge - with that in mind, I loved this movie and thought it was fantastic. One of my favorite aspects of SciFi is using crazy, alien, unearthly things to bring about thought on human issues - something this movie had in spades.

Props to the casting director for assembling that particular team of hot ass chicks (Jennifer Jason Leigh more so back in the day, but I have a soft spot for her form 80s work), but this movie had it all from a SciFi perspective: intrigue, drama, a threat emanating from beyond our worldly realm, tension based on the unknown, great casting, great cinematography. It left you wanting to know more while also doing an adequate job explaining while also leaving enough to the imagination to set your mind free to wonder interesting bullshit - a triple threat.

I've read people's beefs and they seem to come from two angles: it was confusing (which even after only one watch I strongly disagree with), and that it varied from the book (who fucking cares, it's not the book, get over it). Not saying those are 'wrong' as critiques but there's my feelings on that.

Anyway, while there are certainly many ways to explain the contents of this movie, this was my favorite potential explanation and something I didn't really pick up on during the movie, but now wholly agree with:
