I remember the good old days when the only rumor about Rod Stewart was about his semen drinking adventures.

How the fuck did that get spread before the internet so widely around the country that even kids in small-town elementary schools first heard about it on the playground?

Myself included.

Right before dying from eating Pop Rocks and then drinking a Coke, Mikey from the Life Cereal commercials told me that Rod Stewart had to get him stomach pumped

EARLY 80s even.

Damn the Rod Stewart thing is a blast from the past. I was in the 7th grade in '79-'80 and I remember hearing kids talking about it and thinking "What does that mean, how is that possible?"    Young me didn't know about a lot of things.

It turns out that the rumor originated with his former publicist, Tony Toon, who started it as revenge after Stewart fired him. In an interview with British GQ, Stewart elaborated that Toon told the tale to a journalist, which is how it had spread, and that he'd never considered suing for slander. Stewart also shared that he fired Toon because Toon had been sharing a room with the young son of Stewart's then-wife Alana Stewart, "brought a bloke back" to the room, and accidentally awakened the boy, who saw the whole thing. Finally, Stewart pointed out that if the rumor were true, one of the sailors would have, well, surfaced by now and confirmed it. That's a good enough "reason to believe" Rod if ever there was one.

Or maybe that is just the PR damage control story.

This guy next to me at the bar is swearing Rod Stewart just died. “Per Facebook”. I need surly to confirm. I have some 50+ 75+ year old women to console if so.

In case people are interested:

Acclaimed actress Linda Lavin, widely recognized for her role in the CBS series “Alice,” died on December 29 due to cardiopulmonary arrest, with lung cancer identified as the underlying cause.

Similarly, the Atlanta rapper who just died, died in his sleep due to cardiopulmonary arrest - his wife claims that he didn't do drugs, but that is awfully young to have a heart attack without mention of an underlying medical condition.

A guy that lived down the street from us who was an avid tri-athlete died in his house from a sudden heart attack.

In 2016.

Had a friend from high school die suddenly of a heart issue at 37. The autopsy discovered he had a congenital heart defect that had previously gone undiscovered. This was 2019.

I remember first hearing about it with one of the New kids on the block.

That one was actually true, and it happened to every member of the group.

Yeah, that is the likely scenario outside of health issues like drug abuse, obesity, diabetes, High BP/Poor Cholesterol levels…

I was playing basketball at Tulane and a late 20s AA had a heart attack on the court. We gave CPR immediately, an ambulance was there within 5 min, and the guy still died with undiagnosed congenital heart issues. Not relevant, but my buddy had his backpack and watch stolen while we were giving CPR.

It's mentioned in one of the crash threads too.

His death further shook a tight-knight figure skating community already reeling from Wednesday night's crash of an American Airlines flight and an Army helicopter outside Washington, D.C., that killed everyone on board. Two teenage skaters, their mothers and two former world champions who were coaching at the Skating Club of Boston - where Button also skated and which he remained close to the rest of his life - were among the 14 people killed from the skating community.

The trophy room at the Skating Club of Boston is named in Button's honor, and the club has hosted the Dick Button Artistic Figure Skating Showcase, which is designed to promote the beauty and innovation of skating as an art form.

The same way all of the jokes about the Challenger blowing up did, the ones about what shampoo did the astronauts use, what does NASA stand for, etc.

I was in a rural area when it happened, and to this day I don't know how that stuff spreads unless it's a bunch of dads talking to friends/relatives in different parts of the country passing those jokes on, and their kids hearing it or they tell their kids. I remember hearing and telling the jokes on the playground, and how forbidden it was (the teachers were coming down hard on kids and one even got paddled for teling the jokes).

5 or 6 years ago, I brought it up in my high school graduating class's Facebook group, and along with myself, quite a few of us were in different parts of the country from where we went to high school, but a ton of people knew those jokes.  I wondered if it was some kind of thing where later somebody like Andrew Dice Clay told the same jokes on some HBO show or something and some got wind of it that way, but everybody was like "nope, I remember hearing it on the playground and passing it around".  And for most of us, the jokes popped up within weeks of the crash.

I didn't know a lot of things either - I remember asking my dad why there were a bunch of sailors inside of Rod Stewart, and him looking at me and asking what I meant and me responding with something about some older kids saying he was full of seamen.
