are they priorities for transplants though?

Transplant priority doesn't have a thing to do with the underlying cause of the transplant anymore.  It's all based on what is called a MELD score.  Higher the number, the higher the priority.
I've become somewhat of an expert on the subject unfortunately.

Sounds like carbon monoxide.

If that is what is discovered, wouldn't surprise me. We have semi-annual HVAC checks with a local business and several years ago I was having a ton of headaches (no, not for THAT reason) as were some family members and discovered that we had an issue in our system. Fixed it and all was good. Getting that air checked is important.

Seems like Gene Hackman is big enough for us to give him his own thread.  I’m just too lazy.

We should have a conversation about it.

If it doesn’t happen, we’ll all be unforgiven.

Oof. Liver transplant recipient. Apparently those have a high death rate. She was awesome in EuroTrip.

Didn't she play a character who had some organ transplant on a House episode or something?

My wife worked in the ICU unit at Houston Methodist that specialized in liver transplants. Her stories were... unpleasant.

How so?

The reason I ask is that my father in law recently died of fatty liver disease.  He was never a drinker but had a lifetime of eating shitty southern food.  Fuck of a way to go, too.

Anyway, he was on the transplant list but too old (78).  What made the stories unpleasant?  Did the surgeries go badly?

Sorry to hear that. It's been a few years so I don't remember many specifics. But it was one of the premier locations in the world for liver transplants, so they got the roughest shit. Liver patients tend to be incredibly sick, they get very mentally altered, they bleed horribly. And I think usually every organ system gets so fucked by the time they get transplants that it's not like they usually go on to live anything resembling a normal life.

They took care of non-surgical candidates as well. And as you noted, watching someone pass of liver disease, alcoholic or not, is a difficult thing to witness.

One of the two worst ICU deaths I’ve seen was a liver failure (from alcoholism). The guy had completely shut down his liver and basically third spaced blood and fluid into his gut and extremities until I thought his abdomen was going to explode. Dude was bleeding out of every orrifice and ended up “exploding” enough red blood cells to wack his potassium into causing cardiac arrest. Miserable way to die although his ammonia levels had put him into lala land anyway.

My alcoholic FIL died that way 42 years ago (3 months afterhis wife).
Left a bloody mess in his house - from the bedroom to the bathroom.

Damn rip Gene

One of my favorite actors.

Death seems a little suspicious. Wonder what the toxicology report will show. Apparently there were pills scattered about.

Whi died first: Gene or spouse? Did she die days or weeks before and GH was too out of it? I'm guessing one way or the other the dog ate some pills.

I’m speculating and haven’t seen any gossip at all about this, but I bet it’s prescription opiates.  You just don’t see a lot of liver failure, even with alcohol abuse, at such young an age.

It's not the opiates, it's the acetaminophen mixed in with them.

CSB...played Pebble Beach last summer and was admiring all the mansions/beautiful houses along the course.  Get to a hole and on a small peninsula jutting out into the Pacific is the most incredible house I had seen so far.  Ask the caddie who that one belonged to and he said it was once owned by Gene Hackman.  I did also piss on the wall surrounding Charles Schwab's house because I'm kinda classy like that and really needed to piss.

Hackman died of heart failure and advanced Alzheimer’s. Wife had hantavirus. She probably died 5-6 days before him. Damn shame.

Uggh, had something like this (almost) happen to a relative - he had Alzheimer's and his wife became extremely ill and damn near died (covid back in 2020) and he had no fucking clue and just went about his routine as best he could (she normally cooked for him, but he found the cereal boxes and would eat dry cereal, etc.).  It played out over 3-4 days, she was unable to do pretty much anything on her own and was saved only by the fact that when he wandered by on the way to the living room, and she could get his attention, he would bring her water.  Their daughter found her after no contact for 4 days. At times, she couldn't get his attention and he would just go about his day walking just a few feet away from her, and never realizing how much trouble she was in.

Arkansas basketball big man Oliver “Big O” Miller at 54.

https://sports.yahoo.com/nba/article/former-nba-center-oliver-miller-dies-at-54-230947809.html

A Fort Worth, Texas native, Miller was selected 22nd overall in the 1992 NBA Draft after four years at Arkansas. Playing under Naismith Hall of Fame coach Nolan Richardson and alongside fellow first-rounders Todd Day and Lee Mayberry, he helped begin a golden age of Razorbacks basketball, leading the program to three straight SEC regular season and tournament titles and the 1990 Final Four.

First of all, RIP Oliver.  Second, fuck Arkansas and Stroll'n Nolan.  Lastly, it was the SWC, dipshit (Not you Fudge, Jack Baer)

Tracy Morgan Suffers Medical Emergency Courtside at NBA Game

March 18, 2025 by David Jones

Tracy Morgan, a well-known comedian and fervent New York Knicks fan, experienced a medical incident during a game between the Knicks and the Miami Heat on Monday. The incident occurred while Morgan was seated courtside, causing a brief interruption in the game during the third quarter. Morgan was seen in distress and was subsequently escorted from the arena in a wheelchair.

Images and videos shared on social media platforms depicted Morgan appearing unwell at his courtside seat, which was located adjacent to MSG Networks broadcasters Kenny Albert and Walter Clyde Frazier. A fan-captured photo showed a man in a black T-shirt and a black and blue Knicks hat expressing concern for Morgan.

Additional footage circulating on social media showed Morgan being wheeled away, a towel draped over his face, as paramedics and arena staff attended to him. A post on social media suggested that Morgan had been bleeding from his nose and was having difficulty standing.

The incident was also captured on the ESPN broadcast, showing a Knicks towel boy conversing with the referee while attempting to clean up the area. An MSG spokesperson expressed their well-wishes for Morgan, stating, “We hope Tracy feels better soon and look forward to seeing him back courtside.”

Josh Hart, a star player for the Knicks, also expressed his concern for Morgan after the Knicks secured a 116-95 victory over Miami. Hart said, “We hope everything is good with Tracy Morgan, avid lifetime Knicks fan, so prayers go out to him and his health and safety.”

Morgan, a regular attendee at the Garden for many years, is considered one of the Knicks’ most dedicated celebrity fans. He has been a fan since his first game in 1981 and has publicly expressed his unwavering support for the team, regardless of their performance.

The cause of Morgan’s medical incident remains unclear. The comedian has faced several health challenges in the past, including diabetes and alcohol-related issues, which led to a kidney transplant in 2010. In 2014, Morgan was involved in a near-fatal accident when a tractor-trailer struck the luxury minibus he was traveling in, resulting in multiple injuries and the loss of his longtime collaborator, Jimmy Mack.
