There have been several mountain lion sightings near Circle C in south Austin going back several years.  Mostly I just see the cougars at the District Kitchen bar and occasionally at HEB with an upside down pineapple in their basket.  But lots of folks have reported seeing them on the trails around the neighborhood.

Of course there are mountain lions all over central texas and have been since I was younger. I saw one myself hunting in the 1980's, and we have one on camera here in Leander in the last two years.  The guys on the Ticket in Dallas keep arguing that there weren't mountain lions up there for a long time but that's bs too. I know multiple folks who saw them over the years.

TP&W keeps track of confirmed sightings by county.

That’s a pretty cool lInk.  Here’s a screenshot of it in case people don’t click on it. 2 confirmed by TPW in Williamson County and another in Blanco County. And a couple as far east as the border with Louisiana.

There's been one running around the north Dallas burbs getting spotted on ring cameras. TPWD kept saying it was just passing thru. Wonder if that was this one. Can't imagine there's a whole whole lot of them up there.

That's Panola County by Louisiana.  Probably sighted in the Sabine River bottoms there.  That's pretty rough country.

Yeah, it's important to bear in mind these are confirmed sightings.

During the pandemic, there were several sightings of one in the neighborhood where I live on the outskirts of my West Texas town. It even made the TV news over in Midland and I vaguely recall a shitty cellphone pic popping up on Facebook of it trotting down the main arterial serving the neighborhood.

Anyway, my county isn't shaded above, so I have no idea what parameters TP&W uses for official confirmation.

Dude fits the cop phrenology mold to a T. Bald as fuck, holding up dead wildlife like a trophy as if he did something impressive, lights on for no fuckin reason at all, "protect and serve" front and center as if it's not a massive joke.

Rookie move.  Waterloo is where they go with the kids for the playscape. District is where they go when the kids are with their dad.

Back in the early 2000s there were several sightings in Lakeway. This was back when they were trying to figure out what to do with the severe over population of deer around there. TPWD set up game cameras on a few of the trails and several on the golf course and said it was likely more than one cat. A guy I was playing beer league baseball with was a Lakeway cop and said they were finding a deer carcass a week on the golf courses out there. I assume they've moved on with more housing density these days.

They get seen between San Marcos and Wimberley. Well maybe they are cougars in training.

I know you could always find them at a Cool River, so it  makes sense.

Just saw this newsfeed. A mountain lion was struck by a Longview police car in Longview.  They had to put the  big cat down. There has been rumors about cats in the area so perhaps this confirms it.

Wife and I were hiking at Enchanted Rock, intending to circle the base of the batholith. When we saw the mountain lion laying atop a boulder, maybe seventy yards ahead, we decided to go back the way we came.

Saw a mountain lion hop over the fence by Hwy 158 between Midland and Garden City early in the morning a few years ago.   One of those things where you do a double take as you see it happening, and it’s gone in a moment. Clearly a big cat and much larger than a bobcat.

That’s badass. I’m heading out for an overnight backpack at Colorado Bend on Tuesday night. There’s a couple in and around the park apparently. Makes hiking at night…interesting.

I am near Lakeway and I have seen pictures posted of what looked like one down at our park and I found a partially buried whole deer carcas in the woods.  Pretty sure we at least had one roaming around this area during covid.

Kind of amusing there's 1 in Dallas and none in Tarrant (panther city).

It is kind of interesting that coyotes, bobcats, and now mountain lions are seen with increasing frequency in pretty inhabited areas.  Might mean conservation efforts are working.  Or the animals are adapting.

The mountain lions in Griffith Park in LA are an interesting story.  Also kind of sad, as they strive to get out of the confines of the park and sometimes become roadkill.

RIP P-22

Do cougars run in prides like the big cats in Africa, or just cruise solo until they find a lone frat boy?

Haha.  Cougars are solo, at least the males, and travel hundreds of miles to find an unoccupied territory or one they can run off the current occupant.  I think females may group together a bit.

We've seen one twice at our place outside of Luling, in Guadalupe County.  Watched one for about 5 minutes one evening gnawing on a wild pig head we had found and set by the workshop.  And seen evidence of him a couple of other times based on dead calves.  Talking with other ranchers, it seems one ranges between the Luling area over towards San Marcos.

I had one walk across the highway right in front of me about 10 years ago.  It walked with a limp like one of its' front paws was injured.  It was fairly close to Somerville Lake in Burleson County.  I talked to the local game warden about it and he said it was probably just moving through the area.  At that time there were several farmers and ranchers in the surrounding counties claiming a mountain lion had been attacking their horses and livestock.  I also had a buddy that saw one about 20 miles from my sighting, about a month earlier.  On another occasion, probably 20 years ago, I saw one at Colorado Bend State Park.  We were camping up under the wall of one of the big bluffs overlooking the park and river, and saw it perched up on the top of the cliff in broad daylight, watching my friend's young son playing on the shore of the river.  That freaked us out a little bit.

Saw one crossing a rural road in southern Gonzales county in the 1970s, saw one run across Hwy. 77 in Fayette county within the last year, both in broad daylight.

Just noticed broad daylight is a popular phrase today.

One time hunting white tail in junction, we were stalking a herd down a creek. Following their tracks in the mud.

We weren't the only ones.

Came across big ass cougar tracks following the same herd.

Hunted from a blind from then on.
