Texas vs New Mexico State

I will feel a lot better if they can play like this consistently instead of one time. This is the first win that I’ve felt was not just about talent and hero ball, but also about making smart decisions on the floor. A lot more movement and cuts on offense, a lot more good passes, a lot more assists. Much better.

It’s like night and day. It’s hard to believe this is the same team that was playing UConn the other day.

Like I said in the game thread, it wasn't even about how we played. We just didn't show up. It looked like they were hung over from 6th street the night before.

Mark needs to be a volume scorer for Texas, take some heat off Johnson. Tight battle to see who wins the second half.

They came out to start the game and ran the offense through Mark. I agree that this is our best option moving forward. Johnson will get his regardless, they need to get the rest of the team going early.

Pope is a better point guard than Larry for the starting 5. Larry could play more if he didn’t play so loose offensively and get himself into poor situations.

It was a bad result but UCONN was also desperate for a win.

We'll see how we show up in SEC play. Not super optimistic about this group but I'm not going to totally write them off quite yet.

Mark + Tre Johnson + Kaluma is such a good collection of wings. I’m not sure we have had a better group ever at Texas.

The problem is at PG and Center. Pope and Larry are fine, but they aren’t elite. And you need elite guards at the college level. And center is also really sub par.

Yep that's this team in a nutshell.

I think our ceiling is Tre turning into a March legend a la Melo or AD.

I was at a work event . . . what happened with Tre?

He turned or twisted his ankle dribbling up court. He stayed in for a bit, then went out. Then he went to the locker room and didn't come back. This was in the second half; it didn't look that bad.

Onyema has a history of DNAs and primarily poor and forgettable performances at Texas but he’s in better shape this year and doesn’t seem to be completely dumbfounded by the speed and physicality of the game at the top level… he has been consistently better than Shed in just about every category and should be tossed a start against one of the next pre-conference weak teams we play as a reward and message to both he and Shed about what is expected.

Shed needs to focus on defense (especially how to play the screens) and rebounding basics … him lingering out of the paint for more than a flash out against a guard is inexcusable and his boxing out, aggression and base/balance for rebounds are piss poor for a guy with his resume and size in a big boy conference

These three need to be on the court the majority of the game.  Subbing out Mark at the 4 min mark in the first half should stop

This has been obvious for about a month.

Shedrick's inability to move on the perimeter might be the biggest issue on the team. It leads to defensive breakdowns and problems with rebounding. Onyema has his flaws but he can move on the perimeter.

I still think Vinson has the best potential of our big men.  He has 9.8 +/- for the season vs. 4.8 and 4.4 for Shedrick and Onyema respectively.

I would have liked to have kept Dillon Mitchell on this team.  He could have played small ball center for us and does basically everything better than Shedrick.  He is a better defender, especially on the perimeter. And he is a better rebounder.  This year he is even shooting 3s better than Shedrick.  Of course if he would have stayed then we wouldn't have signed Kaluma - and Mitchell fits terribly with Shedrick.

Kadin Shedrick

Also Tyrese Hunter is a better player than either of our current point guards.  I wish we could have kept him as well.  He has improved every year including this one. I would have also liked the continuity bringing back a couple of guys who were key parts of the program, including during the Elite 8 run.

Jordan Pope

Oh well that ship has sailed. We need to get Pope playing up to his potential.  All of his numbers are down this year and he just looks sooooo passive.  As the point guard he needs to step up and lead the team.  Match Tre Johnson's competitiveness.

Shedrick doesn’t have good lower body strength and is easily pushed to be out of position. He’s going to be an issue all season long.

This is his primary problem. Everything else I think stems mostly from this.
