What Is The Best Christmas Movie?

I think the bracket has a recency bias problem. No Christmas in Connecticut or the original Miracle on 34th Steet is curious. No White Christmas is criminal.

I don’t really consider The Apartment or Meet Me in St Louis Christmas movies. Most of St Louis is set in the summer.

Way under the radar Christmas classic: The Desk Set. Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn, and 1950’s office Christmas party shenanigans.

It Happened on 5th Avenue, Three Godfathers, Holliday Inn (people confuse this with White Christmas), We're No Angels, Bachelor Mother

Damn.  Finally got around to watching the sequel to A Christmas Story.  Sure, it tries too hard at time, and it's never going to carry the magic of the first one.  That being said, it definitely got a tad dusty at times.  I liked it.

Is it on any of the streaming apps?

It’s on Max. Both are.

We just watched 8-bit Christmas on there, it’s a really solid new Christmas movie aimed at us 80s/90s kids who now have kids. It’s in the yearly rotation.

Thanks! Watching 8-bit now.  Pretty good.

Watched the Holdovers last night. It's honestly one of the best christmas movies and I'm so glad they made it last year. Such a terrific film and it’s somewhat relatable being a history teacher myself. More movies like that please that take place in the 60s/70s.

Terrific film, but I don’t think it’ll make any Christmas classics lists. It’s kind of dark and confronts mental illness in a very direct way. It has some nice moments, but nobody should confuse it with Home Alone or A Christmas Story.

Christmas Vacation in a runaway landslide. Elf is great for an hour, but is (slightly) overrated. A Christmas Story is a great movie and anyone who hyperbolicly says it’s overrated is absolutely retarded. Love Actually is fucking outstanding and we watched tonight but I hadn’t seen in years and forgot about the porn actor scenes. My 12-yo daughter didn’t like that and my 14 yo son laughed his ass off.

Porn actors?  You mean the people standing in for the actors to frame the shots and get the lighting right?  They’re not filming a porn they’re live action mannequins otherwise known as stand ins.

This might be the best take you’ve ever posted on Surly.

I'm guessing most 12 year old girls don't enjoy watching this scene with their parents.

Loved Trading Places, everything except for Louis Wonthorpe’s girfriend, the one who dropped him as soon as he became poor. What was that bitch’s name?

I bailed him out. And broke up with him, not because he was poor, but because he was a drug dealer.  Angel Dust, PCP.

If we are being real I bet most married men don’t enjoy watching it with their wives…..reminds them of things they lose along the way.

She really failed to appreciate Surly Bevo’s distinction there. And here too:

You could have been a good parent and explained it to her.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I'm 45 years old and yesterday was the first time I have ever watched It's A Wonderful Life. I had scene bits and clips.

Growing up my family didn't have a lot of traditions so it was never a big deal in our house to make sure we watch certain Christmas movies every year.  So no It's a Wonderful Life.

Now that I'm a dad I make sure we have traditions for the holiday season.  Many around movies but also other things that we do.

Just because we had a handle on most things yesterday we sat down and watched it. We were gonna watch White Christmas but decided to do this one instead.

I loved every bit of it.  The movie moved me.

It's now a family tradition.

I was sitting next to my daughter on the couch at the end and started tearing up at the end.

She looked over at me and said "are you crying".  I said "a little bit" and she said " you're so weird dad"

So I've got that going for me, which is nice.

It will be there one day soon.  It's too good not to.  It's already on the very top of my list. I'm surprised it didn't get mentioned until page 3.
