Why we struggle running vs Georgia

That was a bad fumble, but in the middle of 15 straight minutes of assclown dumbfuckery by multiple Texas players.

He's a true freshman. They make mistakes. He can only prove he can protect the ball if he gets the ball again.  On the list of devastating or crucial turnovers committed by our players, his are way down the list.

Agreed, you can’t just sit him. He needs more touches to improve ball security. If you go back and watch, JC25 also had fumbling issues in 2005.

I don’t think the post season is the time to let him try to figure it out.

You’re correct. That’s what Mississippi St, Arkansas, and Kentucky were for. Hell even Oklahoma. This is where Sark being some offensive savant falls short for me. Him, more than anyone should be understanding of learning through mistakes and coaching kids through them. You’re right, it’s too late now. But we’re completely fucked if Wisner goes down. Blue ain’t it when it comes to running the ball.

Juan Davis had so many snaps on re watch.

He was actually stupid wide open on a failed late 2nd Q attempt.   Q clearly doesn't acknowledge him.

But for as many snaps as he got and as easy as we were spreading it out on them, I almost feel we should have tried going Tech on their asses and passing on their asses without any regard until they stopped it.

Just my 2cents after watching the first half again.

I know we are all happy that Davis was able to carve out a role after barely playing a lick his first 3 years, but as often as we find ourselves in 12 personnel, he just doesn't do much. PFF has him as one of the worst run blocking TE's in the country (go back and watch Arch's TD run against A&M and it's hilarious to see Davis with the opportunity to block about 4 different guys and he didn't touch a single one) and we know he doesn't offer much as a pass catcher.

Texas is running everything, which has its benefits, but it also highlights they dont have that go to play.

It mostly means you get fewer reps in practice on each play. Which means your execution suffers.

Sound familiar?

He's very slow (compared to our speed standards)  after the catch as well.

The thing that strikes me about this year's team, though, is how we've got starters, absolute playmakers like Helm and Taafe, who developed and grew into those roles, who were hardly top notch recruits.

When is the last time you remember THAT happening?

That, even more than star rating, is why I'm here for the Sark arc. Guys are going to reach their potential here if they work at it.

On the other hand, this is also where you see those same players' limits. Badly coached talent like aggy? We beat em. Well coached JAGs? We beat em. But well coached talent like Georgia? We're struggling.

And yet, we still could've and should've won the SEC title game. They just got into our heads.

But as for the running game, this is, I think, where that talent gap shows. With a guy like RoJo, or Bijan, or Brooks, we get yards on these runs that Wisner doesn't get. He doesn't have the speed to hit the edge against Georgia's LBs (you really saw this in our game in Austin), nor the strength to get YAC against Georg's front 7.

It's great that we've made a feature back out of a 3rd stringer impressed into service after injuries, but it isn't going to impress the Bulldog D.

From my perspective, I think the “culture” helps tremendously in that the daily competition pushes each player to their limits.  The staff is not satisfied with the status quo either.

Each year Sark has upgraded the talent level.  I don’t think it’s as dramatic as others may think, but it’s pointed to specific things.  Moore for example may not jump off the stat sheet, but he fits this defense and gives great effort.  So where we are is there aren’t weaknesses and individual failures are less apparent.  I’m not talking about perfect roster because those don’t exist.

I love Taaffes success for several reasons.  Helm too as he stuck with it.  Same for Collins, Broughton even though more highly touted.  Hope we don’t lose guys like this in college football due to the portal and overall environment.

Overall talent we can compete with anyone.  We just need to lean into our relative strengths against those like Georgia that have significant talent too.

Also related to the "culture," I think is the fact that even the talented players left when Sark got here were tainted with losing and bad culture, not really their fault.

Now, we've mostly cycled those guys out and replaced them with improved talent with a fresh mindset and improved culture.  Still, they were fairly relentlessly told they were in an inferior conference and lost twice to a UW team on bigger stages, including the CFP.  And basically split with OU, the other perennial national power on our schedule.

And now they're in the big bad SEC where it just means more, and they've done well, but failed the biggest test -- twice -- against an SEC powerhouse in UGa.

A couple of y'all have theorized that the OL basically shit down its leg and underperformed somewhat inexplicably against Georgia.  Could be attributable to impostor syndrome.

So it appears there is some "winnerness" yet to be established among Sark's players.  Smart and Saban had established that winnerness with their talented teams, so there may be less impostor syndrome there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming Sark here.  I think he's on schedule, but establishing that "we will beat anyone at anytime and it will not be a fluke" mentality may not be 100% there yet.

There is a difference. The staff tried to give him a chance vs Kentucky. He immediately fumbled. I am sure if Texas is up 20 in the 4Q on Saturday, he will get another chance. You cannot risk losing a game at this point because you want to give a freshmen another chance.  It’s simple, he will get his next opportunity in mop up duty. There just wasn’t an opportunity to give him in the A&M or Georgia games

I love your delusions. I'd like to share them.

Sadly I'm sold on the @closetojumping reality that Sark isn't putting it in with any qty at this point.

but.. a man can dream.

They also played better defense than we did against them. Georgia only scored 10 points. They turned them over 3 times and got after Beck with 5 Sacks. Ga won the TOP by just about 5 minutes.

lol yeah our defense is to blame

They ran a whooping 22 plays and scored 3 points in the first half and the offense didn’t do jack shit with that momentum and field position.

fuck off with blaming the defense dude our defense is the only thing keeping games close and allowing us to win

He didn't blame the defense. But, it is objectively true that Ole Miss played Georgia slightly better defensively, particularly compared to our second half (with the caveat that we played a completely different Georgia offensive style than they did). Georgia had 245 total yards and 3 turnovers against Ole Miss. Georgia had 252 yards and 2 turnovers against us in regulation. But 80% of that yardage came in the second half. I'm pretty sure if Beck had stayed in the game, our defense does a better job in the second half at limiting Georgia's clock killing drives.

They trotted out their freshman backup quarterback and proceeded to score 19 second half points. There are two halves to a football game. I am tired of you guys dumb ass bullshit. Go look at Ole Miss time of possession. Worse than ours. Ole Miss kicked 4 field goals in the second half. That's it. They held Georgia to 3 second half points. 3! Their defense played better than ours. Why are you arguing that?

yeah it was actually 13 second half points, the last 6 coming in OT after our offense went out there and baby dicked around

when you watch the games it's obvious what is going on, our defense is balling out and our offense is constantly fucking them over.

They come out in the second half and score on our defense and go up 10-6

What does the offense do?

3 and out

Then the defense comes out and gets big plays and stops them for -21 yards and gets us great field possession

Offense gets 6 fucking yards then misses the FG

It's the same story over and over again the whole game, our defense getting the momentum back and playing their asses off, getting stops and turnovers. Our offense sputtering out and shitting own their leg the whole game.

Putting up 16 points in regulation with all those opportunities given to you by the defense is embarrassing and I know you love Quinn so much you just can't fathom that it's his fault but it's obvious dude.

We can't run on Georgia because they aren't worried about Quinn running or extending plays. They will play tough up front and keep everyone else back, and either get sacks or stop the run. Quinn couldn't beat them with his arm, and early on he beat them with his legs a bit but then he got hit once and stopped doing that the rest of the game.

The offense isn't the reason Georgia gained 200 yards in the second half. Come the fuck on.

Yes, it is.

Short drives and turnovers usually lead to more yards for the other teams offense.

They came out and drove the field on the first possession for 75 yards. In fact their three scoring drives were from their 25, 33, and 25 yard line. There were no short drives for points until OT.

Did you watch the game? Georgia went on a 75 yard drive to start the second half. That isn't on the offense. That isn't because of short fields. That isn't because the defense is tired. Then, after we went on a 75 yard TD drive of our own, the defense immediately surrenders  16 play, 72 yard drive that gives Georgia a lead. This is a stupid discussion. Y'all are fucking idiots.

Bro, damn... You expect Georgia to have no drives ever?

Defense mashed for an entire half. Offense did dick.

UGA got a drive to start the 2H. Offense proceeds to do dick. Defense holds. Late Q3, offense finally puts together a drive.

UGA comes right back.

Hell, maybe I do have it wrong. Offense should just stay off the field and let defense handle it. Defense doesn't like long breaks.

The defense played great overall. But the reason it struggled (comparatively) in the second half had nothing to do with the offense. It struggled to address to the QB run combined with Etienne and the Georgia oline upping their game. That's it. You're trying too hard to blame that aspect of the game on Quinn. Not everything bad is his fault.

I'm actually not blaming it on Quinn. I'm blaming it on the offense (mostly slow developing play calling and OL getting pushed 3 yds on top many plays).

Even the mobile QB game was stopped except when it wasn't. Extend a few drives on offense and limit turnovers (and missed FGs which are also turnovers) and the game looks different.

I'm a believer in complimentary football. Offense can make it easier on defense, which is what usually happens this season.

The defense had plenty of rest in the first half. It had plenty of rest at half time before giving up a 75 yard drive. And it had plenty of rest after our 75 yard drive before immediately giving up a 9 minute back breaker of a drive. The offense wasn't to blame for the defenses struggles in the second half. Your point is true generally. It just doesn't apply to that specific game.

We did have two runs that went outside for big yards, that got called back for holding on the wrs. Golden’s seemed very suspect and bond’s was more defensible a call but wasn’t being made consistently.  Those erased big gains into Georgia and also scoring territory and put us way behind the chains.  Difference making calls, both.

The run that Golden was called on should have had an additional 15 yards tacked on for a facemask.

Crazy what happens when you can't sustain a drive and your defense gets a little more tired.

That can happen. But it isn't what happened in our game. Y'all are acting like the offense didn't drive all game. We had the ball for 20 minutes in the first half. Yet Georgia was able to move the chains immediately and consistently in the second half working off QB run. I have little doubt that the defense continues to shut Georgia down if Beck keeps playing. But the backup came in presenting enough of a wrinkle that we hadn't prepared for to let Georgia burn clock. That's what happened on defense. And it isn't like we haven't seen our vulnerability to that style of run heavy game play before. We saw it against Vanderbilt and MSU.  Now, had the offense been better had converting its first half yardage success into points, then Georgia couldn't have relied on the same game plan to play catchup. But that's a separate issue.
