Territorial Cup is a big deal out there, but it's definitely nowhere near as huge as the Iron Bowl game. ASU fans are pretty chill when it comes to football because they're not a big football school. No reason to be hostile when football isn't the expectation. Basketball and baseball, that's a whole nother story.

What possible reason could ASU fans have to be excited about basketball? The last time they were in the sweet 16 was '95, and they have a total of 2 tourney wins since then.

Big Game James Harden!!!

But yeah I always put baseball first, football second, and basketball third for ASU

It's football and it's not even close.  It's just that ASU has been pretty disappointing over the last 25 years.  It used to be the biggest show in town, even bigger than the Cards.  This is only their 4th 10+ win season since 2000 though.

See a lot of talking heads starting to coalesce around this being a close game, due to have a letdown, underestimate the opponent etc.  Nobody brave enough yet to pick an ASU win. We need to go out and put this team down quick if we can, and be prepared for every single barrel being unloaded on us (4th down gambles, fake punts/FGs, onside kicks, etc).

I to like a good single barrel. Wait, what?

Having 7 million grads and 300,000 students helps too.

(Okay it's not that many but it's close)

I looked this up a short while back.  There are around 650k alumni and either 183k or 153k enrolled students.  There are 57k at the Tempe campus.

Texas has 580k alumni.  Enrollment at Texas is around 52k, with 42k undergrads.

Follow links for more details, but these numbers are from the universities.  ASU has 70k+ students in "digital immersion,"  which is code for "online classes."  Fwiw.

It's almost like you haven't thrown PFF grades around this site as "evidence" to support whatever opinion you may have on a particular subject.

I view things like PFF and QBR as just a singular data point. Both have their merits and flaws. What people do them is their own choice. The great thing about them is people tend to shit on them when it does not support their opinion and love them when they do.

To put the aggy stuff to rest, here's why they aren't any version of aggy in the slightest, via Wikipedia

Tldr; no stolen valor or fraudulently claimed titles

Quote

In 1970, ASU finished their season undefeated after defeating North Carolina 48-26 in the Peach Bowl. Poling System (1935–1984)[56] recognized ASU as the No. 1 team in their polling, securing ASU's first National Championship voted by a major poll. The AP and Coaches Polls did not recognize ASU as the National Champions that year, but respectfully ranking ASU 8th & 6th in the nation.

In 1975, ASU finished an undefeated season, by beating No. 6 Nebraska 17-14 in the Fiesta Bowl. ASU was ranked No. 2 in both the AP and Coaches Final Polls. (ASU received 5 of the 63 votes from the AP poll for the No. 1 ranking). Despite the AP and Coaches Polls not picking ASU as No.1, ASU was recognized as the No. 1 team by multiple major selection polls including Sporting News, and [57] The National Championship Foundation. ASU was one of only 2 teams to finish undefeated that year (1975 Arkansas State Indians football team being the other).

ASU does not officially claim either National Championship.

And that’s saying something given that no one in the Valley gives a shit about ASU football. They struggle to fill a 50,000 seat stadium with the nation’s largest enrollment in a metro of nearly 5 million people.

ASU has a 1970 claim too they don't use.  Also about 2 or 3 minutes from winning in 96/97.

The "Sleeping Giant" shit is annoying, but it's there for a reason.  ASU could turn into a monster if it ever got its shit together.

Michael Crow only cares about printing as many diplomas as fast as they can be printed. Athletics will never be a focus as long as he’s in charge.

Bottom line on the aggy stuff is that the U. of Arizona is the land-grant school anyway. UA doesn't feel like an ag campus in the way others do, which may be part of why we want to saddle ASU with that load.

Arizona is an exception to the general rule that the land-grants are "State U." and the traditional liberal-arts colleges are the "University of" in most of the states where there are two major universities (Kansas, Iowa, Okie, Washington, Oregon, North Carolina, New Mexico, Mississippi, etc.). Florida is a another exception. And then you've got the states where the land-grant goes by another name altogether (Clemson, Auburn). And, of course, the A&M anomaly.

An all-time great road trip song. I just learned that was his first hit after always thinking it was Copperhead Road.

But to keep it in the realm of football, I also learned that, at least according to the AI, he has never played a football halftime show.  I suspect that may be a good thing, regardless of how great a show that could be.

That's what I would want, but I doubt that will ever happen.  The Rose, Sugar, Orange, and Cotton bowls won't let it happen.

+fiesta +peach = "NY6"

however i don't understand what agency they have going forward

sure, they have "brands" but the CFP is a separate corporation owned by the 10 FBS conferences + domer

the rose is the only one that actually still plays in the stadium namesake of the bowl

the other 5 use stadiums they don't own

it's like the guys showing up in peach jackets after we beat clemson to invite us to the peach bowl

they are an anachronism - a vestige of another time and place - namely, the 20th century, which is rapidly slipping below the horizon

how exactly are the bowls going to stop the CFP LLC (again, owned by the conferences) from removing the bowls from the playoff equation?

they have zero leverage

the conferences and disney control the landscape

the bowls could be delisted in the next contract and there is nothing they can do because they have no standing and they add no value

CFP LLC can sign venue deals direct with the stadium owners/operators

the bowls have zero say in who plays where or when - they are now logos and grifters in colored jackets - they're done

advertising corporations are taking their seat at the table in place of the bowls

I mean this is what you want if you’re ASU. Can’t blame those guys one bit for that.

I really disagree. Why give the #1 defense in the country extra juice? Yes of course our guys will want to win anyway, but “no one can stop me” is dumb. Under promise and over deliver. His players are chirping like they’re Muhammed Ali and yet they haven’t earned shit

Dillingham thinks he'll be the next Saban because he's Dill.

i remember watching Arizona State struggle with Texas State early in the year on a Thursday night.  i couldn't have imagined we'd be playing the Sun Devils in the quarters. we should cover pretty handily.

Wondering about quarterfinal attendances everywhere. Current TickPick all-in get-in prices

Peach Bowl - $33
Fiesta Bowl - $52
Sugar Bowl - $52
Rose Bowl - $158

the logistics are all fucked up

we would sell the place out but $1200 basic economy roundtrip?

ain't nobody got time for that

pedder travels well...  but phoenix is a 5-hour flight

pedder/byu should have been scheduled ad-hoc for the dome in st. louis the afternoon of pedder/smu

texas/asu: sun bowl (far enough south it doesn't have to be indoors, otherwise coin-flip tempe v. jerry)

fosu/oregon: minneapolis us bank

domer/uga: st.louis again is fairest option

every year there will be straight-seeded matchups where the stadium choice is obvious and could be decided 11-12 days in advance and give the largest number of fans of each program the chance to get there

then there will be matchups that are just too far apart that no finagling with the site will deliver a result either side would like, i.e. pedder/smurf in minneapolis is closest to being equidistant, but is still too far to drive each way in 1 day and requires a long flight just like phoenix for tonight's game

I still don't understand why he talked all that shit about being better than Quinn.

Even if it's true, which is debatable, you're the one going against the best defense in the country.  Say that stuff to your teammates behind closed doors, but I don't see how saying it to national media can help your cause.  You're not getting into our secondary's head and you might just make an ass of yourself.

"Maybe we'll win by 3 touchdowns."

We saw this song and dance with Clemson.

  1. Matchup announced
  2. Initial reactions range from "Texas slaughters them" to "Texas wins comfortably"
  3. Talking heads start saying "well actually..." to position themselves as contrarian and present a dissenting opinion as part of the natural news cycle
  4. More talking heads start parroting the possibility of an upset
  5. Prominent talking heads give airtime and credence to the idea that the plucky underdog actually is pretty damn good and identify Texas as a team vulnerable to an upset
  6. Fans of both teams start buying the media version of reality.  Texas fans start shitting themselves in fear, underdog fans start believing they actually have a chance
  7. Gameday arrives, Texas wins by 2 touchdowns and covers.

6a.

On our 26, 4th & 6, 1:16 left on the clock, clemson's chance for a score and onside/hailmary miracle ended when klubnik/moore could not connect on a 4th & 6; we barely covered in the most competitive game of round 1.

We got the first down.  Refs fucked us and it was obvious on the review.  Keep lying to yourself though.

When were the Fiesta, Sugar or Peach bowls ever played in a namesake stadium?

Couldn't say regarding Fiesta or Peach, but the Sugar Bowl game was played in what was named Tulane Stadium although I always heard it called Sugar Bowl Stadium. Super Dome or Superdome was built in early 1970's, opened I think in '75. I saw the 1970 Sugar Bowl game - Ole Miss and Arkysaw. Ole Miss won and the MVP was some guy named Archie Manning.
