Watching ESPN (the Peach Bowl) in Germany?

Recommended Posts

So, we have to do “second Xmas” over there this year, due to kiddo travel issues. We will be at a friend’s house on New Year’s Day, and would love to watch the game there.

My spectrum app won’t work over there, and I tried to test it out using my VPN (NordVPN), and the app won’t let you log in through that VPN.

Anyone know a workaround that actually works? Am happy to download and pay for some other app that grants ESPN access, but I suspect that I’ll need to use a VPN ultimately, because unless it’s a native app over there, it won’t connect.

Or…is there a VPN that works for these purposes?

Methstreams is easy.

From a reddit

Spoiler

know this is really old now but just for anyone if curious I use Nordvpn and have never had any issues with ESPN+ detecting it as long as you make sure you delete history and cookies before opening up ESPN if you turn your VPN off. Once the game loads you can turn off VPN and open more games including whatever you just chose for your location. I will say it is a little finicky in that my blackout team is in Tennessee and only setting VPN to New York will work. If it's detecting try different states and may get lucky like I did but you will have to delete history etc each time as it's stored

Are you wanting to watch on a laptop or cast to TV?

Was hoping to watch on a TV, but my plan was pretty basic: run an HDMI cable from my phone to the TV.

Not sure how it works overseas, but can’t you just use the ESPN (after validating your cable provider info) or Hulu apps if you have the ESPN/Hulu/Disney bundle?

Why are you messing with your spectrum app? Just watch it on the ESPN app.

During the OU game I was in Brussels. I used Tailscale VPN to create a VPN with my computer at home. I then used Moonlight, which is a remote streaming software primarily used for gaming, and connected to a Sunshine server I have running on my home desktop. This allowed me to stream my desktop, including YouTube TV from my laptop or even cell phone in Brussels. I connected my laptop to a 65 inch TV at the hotel conference room we had. It worked awesome. Other remote desktop connections have higher latency and lower refresh rates, making them poorly suited for this. Moonlight/Sunshine is based on Nvidia's technology for remote game play and works amazing.

Remote desktop connections like over a VPN get around the various protections the streaming apps put in place. It is also possible to spoof the GPS on your phone and combine that with a VPN to get access to streaming services, but many of the VPNs are known by the streaming services and get blocked. My way gets around all that because as far as the streaming service is concerned, you're connected from your home computer.

Happy to walk you through it. It is fairly simple to use once set up. And it is absolutely free.

They don't have streaming rights overseas. Other services give you partial access to different content depending on the streaming rights they own.

That....is a lot.  Being that I don't have a desktop at home.  HOWEVER, we do have a VPN for the office, which I think routes me through our home office.  I'll check on how that will work.  If that works, great.  If not, Immamac has offered me a workaround, will talk about that with him some more.

Really hope I can make it work, as I even bought some Longhorn gear for our German friends, and told them I'm hoping to introduce them to a American tradition -- watching a bowl game on New Year's day.

Fair. You'd just need a computer (laptop or desktop) setup at home. I know it sounds like a lot, but it is really maybe 30 minutes of setup. Tailscale is a super easy and flexible VPN software. Happy to walk you through it if you want to try, just DM me.

If your work VPN lets you connect to a remote desktop (our office uses Citrix for this purpose), then you can likely run YouTube TV or ESPN in the browser of the remote desktop and it should work fine. You might have to turn off hardware acceleration in the browser settings of the remote desktop (if it is on, the screen will just show black).

Or, you know, trust our resident caveman.

Almost all CFB games on ESPN/ABC are on YouTube and without trouble. Something makes it hard for Youtube to take these down cause of Youtube TV.

Not sure how the TNT games were for the first playoff weekend.

I wonder why that’s true for CFB but not the NFL. Those get taken down rather quickly.
