Life During Wartime (Naive Melody) (Talking Heads)

the Kinks - "You Really Got Me"  is a glaring omission.

I considered this one. But then again I was struggling to have my list cover a cross section of the rock era and not just the 60s. You could probably make a legit top ten from just that decade. Hell you could probably make a legit argument for 10 from the early 60s and 10 from the later 60s. Sort of crossing the Mad Men divide if you will.

If I made a list in the category "shittiest songs by great bands", about 5 of these would be on the list.

Did this exercise with some friends recently. This is what I came up with:

Top 10 in no particular order

1. Wildflowers (Petty)
2. Let it Loose (Stones)
3. Who (David Byrne and St. Vincent)
4. My Old School (Steely Dan)
5. You Could Be a Star (Prince)
6. He's Misstra Know-It-All (Stevie Wonder)
7. Life During Wartime (Naive Melody) (Talking Heads)
8. Last Tube (Trey Anastasio)
9. Hold On, I'm Coming (Sam & Dave)
10. Atlantic City (The Band)

Honorable Mention

Stay with Me (The Faces)

The Faces were a GREAT band for a few years there.  Just pure smoke.

well, thats just like your opinion, man.   but maybe i misunderstood the category.  if it was pick your 10 favorite rock and roll songs, you probably wouldnt have heard of any of mine.  if it was pick the top 10 rock and roll songs, any list without stairway to heaven, freebird, and hotel california on it is not a legitimate list.  thats just the facts, man.  no debate about it.

Lots of repetition in this list, but this is what I've got, in no particular order:

1) Rock Around the Clock - Bill Haley and the Comets

2) Jailhouse Rock - Elvis

3) Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry

4) Good Vibrations - Beach Boys

5) Like a Rolling Stone - Dylan

6) Hard Day's Night - Beatles

7) Sympathy For the Devil - Stones

8  Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream

9) All Along the Watchtower - Jimi

10) Rock and Roll - Zeppelin

Honorable Mention:

Substitute - The Who

Money - Pink Floyd

Mean Streets - Van Halen

Foot Stompin' Music - Grand Funk Railroad

I'm sure I'll think of others later.

I mean I recognize the competent drum work of Don Brewer as much as the next guy, but no.

Are you sure you want to include Mean Streets on that list?  It's so much newer than the rest of the music; maybe it needs to age-up a little to make sure it stands the test of time.
