How do I make good iced coffee

Parliament

Recommended Posts

As per usual, Parliament has resolved to get less fat.  A big cause is the cream and sugar in the copious amount of coffee I drink.  So it's time to go black.

Hot black coffee is fine.  Good if you convince yourself of it.  But I'm thinking iced coffee for later in the am.  Can just pour my dripped Folgers onto ice, but I know the F&D ballers here will have good ideas.

I have a drip coffee maker, but am willing to upgrade to a percolator.  Buy Folgers and Dunkin ground coffee.  Don't wanna buy a grinder.

Cream and sugar are out, but I'm game for skim milk.

Pouring hot coffee on cold ice waters it down some.  Not a deal killer, but what are the workarounds?

Mix the ground coffee with the water in a large container. Cover and allow to sit at room temperature for at least 12 hours or up to 24 hours.

2Line a fine mesh strainer with cheesecloth and set over a pitcher or other container. Pour the coffee/water mixture through the strainer, allowing all the liquid to run through. Discard the grounds.

3Place the coffee liquid in the fridge and allow to cool. Use as needed.

then just pour over ice

I recommend an actual old-timey percolator for making coffee. We hit on this after eventually breaking all other, more "advanced" devices. Much smoover coffee.

Also, maybe try making cafe de olla. Basically boiled in a cooking pot with loose grounds, and some cinnamon. You scoop it out with a ladle.

These two take a little time. Just start em up before you get in the shower.

Then, yeah, I guess put em inside something cool, and you're good.

When I got super into cold brew I landed on the Oxo cold brewer:

Wirecutter reviews: https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-cold-brew-coffee-maker/

Now that I've had kids I end up just buying the HEB cold brew concentrate. Easy and I can do my 50/50 split with water and maybe a little of the sweatener below.

Make sure it's the concentrate not the pre mixed stuff that looks almost the same.

To echo what everyone has said, cold brew >>>>>>>>>>> iced coffee for me.

I'm lazy so I would buy the coffee at heb, grind it there then make a batch.

Whatever you do, do NOT drink straight concentrate because it will fuck you up in a very not good way. Not even kidding, avoid at all costs.

Gotta strain it or you’ll be chewing it at the end or spitting out grounds

Buy this thing, let sit in fridge for at least 12 hours. Technically that’s cold brew but that’s better than iced coffee anyway.

My wife likes an occasional iced coffee, but she loads it up with creamer.  She bought one of those Stok bottles at Costco, and I wash and refill it with a stout pot of home brew, let it cool and refrigerate.  Heck of a lot cheaper than $6 a bottle, and with as much crap as she puts in it she doesn't complain.

Fara coffee hits a pretty strong value point ($/lb).  They carry it at HEB.  Buy an inexpensive burr grinder.  Get a French press, grind on coarse, test the amount of ground coffee you need to hit the best flavor profile you're looking for.  Win.

This is the methods that I use.  French Press makes it easy.

This is all you need - it's a mason jar with the filter: https://www.amazon.com/Coffee-Pitcher-Stainless-Filter-Lemonade/dp/B0C2QK5SD8/ref=sr_1_9?crid=4OFT2F506G86&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.pJ-nTHRzfRSUknXXUVlqUkyhI0cYKmuq6rXXqBJ6VGobvJ6hoHNhWMCX4vTplo_LRXVhc_5cGmTrLsdRRl-pv2pCFWwoniQp5a4SlNkD5JRSbKrthHfrQwzptoyx3QcuF7qZkdCFqmSD0U9QlVUE6oQV7Ow84SepTiRNWK7rP3bF_GMAKxrL1iKO1ifPNsKkMQMKabS2gdch98ekM7XSnMZ_eAsi3eactxwDDnIJO_mRjLrg0O7YrG1Q60ExqNm7KEUkxg06kls6FUg3ezOuKJysFDZMnXKwo2_KSWNOBg8x-eTdVivijZBU1bSXIPGT6KYGYd11YmxT5l2Uz8AeofDZOVhOL2OVrghmgVND1FUF5t0WJRRAlJjX-5JVwY3vNEb7FU6gHLDzLS6Rct3i2wgyQZOL8Rx7KzBeBOF0DfFFKmfnnTFgsptKgB-Q_91_._tlcnr90CV-vgdc3egu5wQFN__tk7zw4j3wEhySeP4A&dib_tag=se&keywords=cold%2Bbrew%2Bmason%2Bjar%2Band%2Bfilter&qid=1735576432&sprefix=cold%2Bbrew%2Bmason%2Bjar%2Band%2Bfilter%2Caps%2C85&sr=8-9&th=1

Go to the grocery store and buy a big bag of decent coffee beans.

Any decent store should have a commercial grinder by the bulk coffee.  Grind the whole bag on the coarsest setting they have. You don't want the grind to be too fine.

Put the filter in the jar, fill the filter with coffee grounds, fill the jar with water.  Put the jar in the fridge for 24 hours.

Keep the coffee bag with the remaining grounds in the freezer until you're ready to make another batch.

Take the filter out of the mason jar when you're ready to start drinking.  Dump the grounds.  The concentrate in the jar will make quite a few cups of cold brew.

Mix the concentrate with skim milk.  The milk should provide enough sweetness and you'll figure out your ratio soon enough.  I typically do about half concentrate and half milk.

This method results in coffee that is much less bitter than brewing hot coffee and then letting the hot coffee cool.

None of this straining stuff

Grind your beans, put them into a cheesecloth square, tie off the cheesecloth so it looks (and acts) like a big tea bag (lol). Steep coffee in a big pitcher of water like you were making tea, place in fridge for appropriate amount of time and presto! you have cold brewed coffee without fiddling without straining.

Then if you’re feeling up to it, get something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Royal-Nitro-Coffee-Maker-System/dp/B07SB2K1C6 and now you’ve got your own nitro cold brew. The upshot of this is it gives you all the wonderful creaminess without having any actual dairy.

Yup, any number of methods to soak the grounds in cold water for 12-24 hours. I can't imagine Folgers would taste good at all, but I doubt you need a grinder and fancy high price beans either. Sprouts has a pretty good collection of beans which are way better than the mass produced stuff but not as costly as the craft stuff. They often have at least one on sale at any given time as well. You can use their grinder too and it will still be better than preground mass produced coffee.

You peasants keep buying what you're buying.

That's cute, I only drink coffee that is pooped out by Indonesian forest cats.

That's not iced coffee; that's cold brew.

For iced coffee... I just put ice in a mug and brew espresso over it. Top-notch every time.

UPDATE

I chilled the Folgers that I have, added plenty of skim milk and poured over ice.  It is palatable.  Gonna upgrade coffee brands, as I see the bitterness of the generics really comes out when you cool it down.

Will run on this and confirm I can stick with the resolution.  Give it a month and I'll get one of those cold brew pitchers.

Thank you for your advice.
