Weather is looking like it's gonna be around 32 all day in DFW and then plunge and stay cold for a while. Looking like it's gonna be icy as hell up there, wonder what all will be disrupted

when I lived in Washington state, it was a section known as the banana belt, or the Tri-Cities (Tri-Shitties).   The mild winters usually had the temperature hovering around freezing. Which led to the common occurrence of snow melting during the day, turning into water and then freezing hard once the sun went down.  “Black Ice” was the term for it, and you would be driving along only to hit a large section of highway that was a skating rink, and good luck hitting your brakes or trying steer out of it.

Stay safe people

Already about 4 inches on the ground in WiseCo. Drive from DFW wasn't bad, just idiots that were going slower than they needed to. OMG, it's snowing! There were a couple spots that could have been blizzard worthy if the wind was blowing.

I’d rather have to deal with the inconvenience of someone going slower than maybe necessary.

In two days it will be the five year anniversary of someone driving too fast for road conditions killing two Lubbock firemen and a Lubbock police officer working a previous wreck. A month from tomorrow will be 11 years since a Dallas fireman working a previous wreck was hit and killed by someone driving too fast for road conditions. The second leading cause of death for fire and police, behind heart attack, is involvement in a vehicle collision. Not fire. Not a meteor. Not a bad guy with a gun or knife. I like my job, but I’d prefer to not die doing it unless it’s necessary.

Yep, everyone with a 4x4 thinks it's the magic cure.  Sure, it can help you start, but not stop....and AT/Mud tires on snow & ice are dogshit.  I was crossing a small overpass once near Sherman in a 4x2 truck with no weight in the back.  Did a complete 360 and never touched either side of the guardrails.  Thankfully nobody was around as I obviously cleared both lanes, but damn.  Sobering to say the least.  I also remember the days before they lowered the gradient on Ranger Hill.  Half the state would get stranded.

The difference between snow and ice is traction. Just because the road is white does not equal death. See every state up North.

Then again, we don’t have a set of specially designed studded snow tires sitting in the garage, waiting for this type of weather.   when I lived in Washington the state patrol required all vehicles to carry chains over Snoqualmie Pass from November to April.     They have chain checkpoints - and if you don’t have them or don’t put them on, they send your ass back home.

Today it's 41 years since Van Halen released 1984.

Every state with mountain roads has chain laws. They also get 2-3 ft of snow an hour on the passes. We get 3 - 4 inches a day, like my ex-wife.

right right right.    I was just adding to the comment that people up north manage, and was just putting out that people up north also have studded snow tires and chains.

Some do, some don't. It's all about knowing your limitations. Snow socks work surprisingly well.

Yep.  Family is WA state deal with this all the time.  Hell, they were cutting x-mas trees yearly for a while in the mountains and had to gear up to do it.  Brother's big Dodge always gets punked when my dad and his little '09 Tacoma jut snakes it's way up the trails that the bigger trucks can't manage.

Ran a few errands.  Full size Tundra with slightly oversized Cooper ATPs on it.  No reason to even engage 4x4.  No real weight in the bed.  It's just slushy.  No ice.....yet.

Didn't slip and slide or have any issues overcorrecting except when I purposefully gunned it to scare my sassy little daughter.

The worst part of driving in snow is not being able to see the lanes or the edges of the road.  Unless it's really wet and slushy, it doesn't toss the vehicle around much.

You guys are lucky that the ditches never fill up enough to make it impossible to discern where the shoulder drops off.

I'm not sure what you mean by "up north" but studded tires and chains are rarely used around here.  Snow tires are common, but that's just a different tread profile.

That’s only because the meth heads steal them. (I keed….I can say that because I used to live in Sioux City.)

Actually, I was mostly referencing my time in Washington state, but it’s probably more accurate to say ‘in northern mountain states’

8-9 inches of snow in the Panhandle.  It's been a minute since we've had this much.

Predictions varied widely from 2-12 inches.  I hope we have enough toilet paper...

Hopefully it keeps Tech fans out of United Supermarket tomorrow.

Lubbock barely got a dusting of snow and should be clear, especially by tomorrow.  Students are back.

The USA should be ready to go for the Cyclones.  I hope the team is too!

Safe travels if you are coming in.
