It's gonna be cold, that seems certain.  However, it looks like it's more moderate than "2021, we all gonna die" cold.

The question is whether it's gonna be wet.

Ain't that always the question?

The models were wildly different in 2021.  The one I used to use to trade natty fymurures was adamant we were looking at a prolonged deep cold.  I spent the week ahead buying food, firewood and other shit because I trusted that model.  Some models are showing next week much colder than what we see from NWS.   He’ll, this past week has been much cooler for much longer than they called for.

This will absolutely change as it is still a week away, but it’s pretty clear there will be another winter storm in Texas next week.

Just picked up my skis from getting waxed and tuned.  5-7" of fresh pow in Austin?  Bring it.

Brings back Covid memories, many boxes of red were drank with nothing else to do.

One of our neighbors was "quitting drinking" and gave us 2 boxes of red wine about a week before Snowpocalypse. We put those fuckers away fast that week.

Not gonna lie that I drank a couple of boxes of Nikolai Vodka during Covid.  Dollars was tight there for a bit

I snowshoed my way to the only open convenience store multiple times that week to replenish booze. Love ya Flag Store.

Heh.  The only "good" that came out of COVID for me, other than job security, was to point out the volume that I was drinking.  I was using the Specs and Twin apps to curbside tequila regularly.  It was easy to see my pattern and hit the fucking breaks before it got out of hand, but I could see how easily I would have drowned myself in that shit.  I think I loaded up on 2 handles in '21.  I don't remember much about it other than being thankful my pipes survived.

That’s a rookie mistake. Everyone on this site had plenty of warning to stock up.

The way this is shaping up Houston will get snow and central Texas will get dick.

Reminds me of XMAS 2004.  I was up in Minneapolis with some -40 degree nights and 2" of snow on XMAS day when I read parts of South Padre island got 4" of snow. WTF.

I grew up in Corpus Christi.  I'd never been to the mountains and had never seen snow.  First time I saw snow was a trip to Colorado when in 2007 when I was 27.

I got married in June of 2003.  Spent Christmas that year in Corpus with my family.  Spent Christmas 2024 in East Texas with my wife's family.  This was pre iPhone, so I was getting call after call from my parents, sister, aunts, uncles and drunk cousins saying how amazing it was to have a White Christmas.  In Corpus Christi.  Meanwhile, I was sitting in the living room with no snow, no TV, no music, and no entertainment with my wife's teetotaling family.  20 years later, and I'm still pissed about it.

For those of us in SE Texas, there is still snow on the table. We won’t know for certain until Sunday really, but it’s fun to imagine. I just hope my business trips gets canceled so I can stay home and throw the football in the snow with my son.

That reminds me about another thing about that trip...we were visiting my wife's brother and his family along with her parents and grandmother. Everybody was cool with some winter drinking except grandma.

I was 37 at the time and had to go to the basement to sneak in some bourbon for my egg nog so grandma wouldn't see...and I too am still pissed.

That old bat lived to be 100, so that wasn't the last time Jiggy had to slink off for booze like a an underaged tennager.

THURSDAY 1/16/2025 ARCTIC UPDATE

I'm seeing more signs that we may be in for a genuine Gulf coast snowstorm over Southeast Texas starting MLK Day and ending on Tuesday. Based on all the data we have now( (plus looking back at similar weather patterns from the past), our part of the state looks to be most favored for snowfall, and potentially a heavy one. BUT!

BUT! (There's always a "BUT!" 4 to 5 days out...)

This largely hinges on where a low pressure center forms over the Gulf of Mexico. If it forms generally east of Brownsville, it is likely SNOW ON for Southeast Texas. That's what the European computer models is showing.

But if it forms closer to the Bay of Campeche, then it tugs a lot of the moisture along with it. There could still be snow, but it would be generally south of I-10 and may miss Houston entirely like the Christmas Eve snow of 2004. That's what the morning run of the American model is showing...but the new run populating right now is coming in line with the snowier European model.

So what happens if the coastal low forms closer to Texas? Then we could be in for a lot of freezing rain, and that would be a worst-case scenario.

What are currently predicting? We are still holding our snow chances at 40%...for now. But if we continue to see things converging toward the European solution, then those snow chances will be going way up.

I'll update you again later this evening after analyzing some more data. Stay tuned!
