Winter Weather 2025 - Arctic Blasts or Sweaty Ass?

I drove from Brazoria to La Porte at 10 AM this morning. 288 to bw8 to fairmont. Lanes were mostly clear,  l ice still on the sides, a few places in the lane closest to the center had some ice. The merge from 288 to bw8 was the only place I had regrets. Was the weirdest drive I’ve ever had in Houston with all the white everywhere.

I left work about 630p. Roads were clear except an ice cube or 2 against the medians.

I don’t know where you’re looking, but Houston doesn’t show to get below 33. And most of the roads are clear, so even if the temp gets low there isn’t anything to turn to ice.

I guess Apple Weather updates pretty regularly. Looks like it’s shifted back to a light freeze. Thanks.

Apple weather is pretty terrible, imo.

Multiple lanes across the Southwest Freeway have been temporarily closed due to damage caused by snowplows that were clearing snow from the roadways.

They should have hired this guy:

I remember when I moved to DFW area from New York after living in NY for 10 years and living with their winters, and I saw all of the raised reflective markers for the yellow and white lanes on roads.   I thought well, they don't have any plows or need for plows here, because a plow would just rip the road apart.  I guess Houston forgot that.

So.....how are the long term forecasts looking for another arctic outbreak?

Because I've got a bunch of goddamned plants in my bathroom that I'd like to get back out on our deck, but can't do so if we're gonna get down into the 20s again in another week or two.

Just dry that shit up and smoke em.

I kid. Yeah, my office looks like a damn botanical garden. Most can go out tomorrow so that is Leg day for me.

The herbs are easy.  My wife's giant lemon tree, which a) produced great lemons this year, so we're happy with it, and b) is already starting to blossom, needs to go outside and get good sun, air, and some sexy group pollinator action.

Mandarin, avocado and olive trees.

Get them out manana. Rain and dappled light is the forecast. Perfect for that transition to Hellfire summer. Of course, they will be coming back in within 10 days.

My Key lime tree needs friends. What variety are your avocado and Mandarin trees? (I assume you need a couple avocado trees to pollinate.)

Hass and forget the Mandarin. I don't grow for fruit, just love plants and grow a lot of odd shit. Starting over. Lost 90% of my plants during the big freeze.

Ha. We also have an avocado tree. Started from a pit by my daughter about 7 or 8 years ago. Will likely never produce but I'm determined to keep it alive like Leon's plant in The Professional.

Man I could never move to somewhere that has more winter than Austin.  Somewhere in the tropics is in my future, ideally.

I'm probably moving to Colorado (Denver/Boulder/Fort Collins) in the next 12-18 months.

So, wish this life-long Texan luck in the next Surly Winter Weather thread.

We’re getting snow!

Okay so only the tops of the peaks are, but I have always found this to be pretty cool, even if it’s not a rare event. Mostly it’s just something we were never taught to associate Hawai’i with when you learn about it growing up elsewhere.

I feel like we are always good for one last blast of winter.  Sometimes it comes mid-February other times even March.  But it will come.

Always be wary in Central Texas planting Tomatos before Easter. Old farmers advice.

I remember February of 1996 or so.  One day, we walked to lunch and commented that it was downright hot...and it was, we got up to 99 degrees that day.  3-4 days later, we had to cancel depositions because nobody could drive anywhere because we had an ice storm.
