Some dumbass in Port Arthur bundled up his 6 month old and used him to “shovel” snow off his car - with the license plate visible, in a TikTok video.

Honestly, if it was a 2-year-old or older toddler it would have almost been cute. Questionable, but no big deal.

But guess whose wife happens to be the on-call manager, and guess who is going to have a CPS investigator at his house as soon as the streets clear?

For F'n real?

Overkill. This is the kinda shit my dad would have done with me in the 70s (with a cig in his mouth) and nobody would have blinked.

But man the outrage machine is in high gear.

my best guess at the end of the day was about 10 inches of snow.  it continued to snow for about three hours after the birdbath picture.

Edit: at 7 AM this morning it was 17°.

The one thing I miss about growing up in the midwest is sledding.  By "sledding" I mean "sliding down hills on whatever you could find".  We used actual sleds, toboggans, saucers, inner tubes, carboard boxes, whatever, and it was always a blast.  You'd go out for hours and get absolutely drenched, then come inside and whoever's mom would have hot cocoa ready and a roaring fire (or maybe a space heater).

I never landed a mom.

I knew those volcanos were tall, didn’t know how tall, I just thought snow is still rare, didn’t realize they had it all the time.

We were on first international flight to arrive at IAH after it opened today. It was eerie seeing customs like this. Usually a fucking mad house.

Fraser, CO.  In the mountains near Winter Park.

My sister-in-law used to live there.  The cold there is no joke.

Fraser, with an annual mean temperature of 38.0 °F (3.3 °C) (or 34.8 °F (1.6 °C) based on another station in town) is one of the coldest incorporated towns in the lower 48 states. It can and does get frost year-round, totaling 287.3 nights under 32 °F (0 °C), rivalled only by towns in northern Alaska and Bodie, California,

A freeze has been recorded for every single date of the year, one of the only locations in the entire United States to hold that record.[12]

I've got a 2 story detached garage, office/apartment with a full bath upstairs (tankless water heater), utility/fish cleaning sink downstairs. Insulated garage door. Turned the water off at the meter last night, heated the bottom of the garage with one side of a dual propane heater on low (kept it at about 55 degrees).

Turned the water on at the meter at about 9am and just got water back on in the garage at 12:30 pm. No burst pipes, but single-digits had me worried for a bit.

I pulled out my cooler contraption with the reptile heater bulb that is somewhere over 100° like I did two years ago. (pics above)  When it was 21° outside - it was was 37 where the cooler meets the brick - and I have to think it’s 5 to 10° warmer inside the cooler because I lined it with reflective thermal insulation.

Anyway, for the recent sneaux days I did not wrap the pipes and I did not leave any faucets going at night.   When I woke up at 7 AM it was 17.   I turned on the water in the kitchen (which is the farthest place from the water inlet) and I had no problem.    The thing works great.

If I lose electric power, then yeah that would all be a waste of effort

Correct.  We sit at the bottom of the valley, like the bottom of a big bowl.  The really cold air just settles to the bottom.  On really cold days, it's 15-20 degrees warmer up on the hillsides than down where we are.

How are the road conditions in Houston? We’ve been ordered to go in tomorrow, and it looks like it’ll be below freezing for 7 solid hours before I drive in.

A lot of their decision making is based on what HISD and Katy ISD decide to do (terrifying). I get the feeling they thought the weather would be fine this afternoon, the weather shifted, and we’re looking at another hard freeze tonight. I know they want to get back to normal, but this seems unwise.

Multiple lanes across the Southwest Freeway have been temporarily closed due to damage caused by snowplows that were clearing snow from the roadways.

They should have hired this guy:

I was out and about running errands this afternoon and the roads were fine. Mostly dry with some puddles and standing water here and there due to our stellar drainage here in the Bayou City.

I drove from Brazoria to La Porte at 10 AM this morning. 288 to bw8 to fairmont. Lanes were mostly clear,  l ice still on the sides, a few places in the lane closest to the center had some ice. The merge from 288 to bw8 was the only place I had regrets. Was the weirdest drive I’ve ever had in Houston with all the white everywhere.

I left work about 630p. Roads were clear except an ice cube or 2 against the medians.

I don’t know where you’re looking, but Houston doesn’t show to get below 33. And most of the roads are clear, so even if the temp gets low there isn’t anything to turn to ice.
