You won't find "decent" built-in sound. It all sounds like shit.

For something easy, samsung tv's paired with samsung soundbars. Once hooked up, they act as one unit with the tv remote. Once you set it up, that's all that will need to be done.

Honestly it would be easier with a roku box vice the "smart" part of tv. Their UI's are typically terrible, especially for the olds.

If they also have cable, all they have to do is change the input. If they're going with something like YoutubeTV or Hulu Live TV, then no need to switch inputs at all. (And the roku remote will turn the tv on/off and sound up/down just fine, so still only 1 remote needed.

Well, fuck. Got a dead pixel in the middle top center. Guess it’s warranty time. Furk.

Dude you fucking cursed me. I have the Hisense short throw. Dead pixel top center as of Sunday. I bought it off of Amazon in 2022. Probably not under warranty any longer.

Well fuck, that sucks the fat one.

I’m not real sure how to truly describe mine. It’s not “technically” dead as in “not lit up”, but it’s more a group of pixels still rgb and not mixed. Far enough back it looks like a big white pixel.

So dead in operation.

Thankfully not even a year into 4 years of coverage. (2 standard, 2 added at purchase, and feeling better about adding on now.)

The first stuck pixel showed up in mid December, about 3 months shy of 3 years. A couple of weeks later, a second stuck pixel showed up. Last night, a 3rd. What the funk is going on Hisense? Based on Google search results, I'm nearly certain they're going to tell me that I'm SOL because I bought it off of Amazon, which they consider an unauthorized dealer.

Did they commit to sending one?

I decided to get off of my ass and email Hisense today. It would be pretty miraculous if they decided to do anything but I figure I should try. Doesn't seem cool to not stand behind a failing product that cost 3400 bucks 3 years into its lifecycle.

They did. About 4 weeks ago they said it would be 4-6 weeks.

I’m thinking of hitting them up again next week. Get a status and prod them along a bit.

And now a 4th dead pixel. What in the hell.

I submitted a ticket through Hisense's contact us form on Tuesday, it wasn't really an email. I have not heard anything and I did not get a confirmation email or anything so now I'm wondering if it even went through. I guess I'll follow up.

Looks like I’ll be following up too.

Switching gears…

Damn. You never notice how much shit out there has deep, booming bass until you get a decent setup.

Murder porn, cheerios commercial, whatever.

I mean, really?

Also reminds me I need to pick up those svs isolation feet.

The isolation feet work really well.  I've got them on my SB-16 Ultra

Thanks for that. I need to get some on the way. One of these nights I’m going to forget to turn it way down.

Good to know they work as advertised. Not that I currently doubt svs, mind you.

I had a dead line of pixels on my Hisense a few years ago.  They were very responsive and, after a few weeks, I got a replacement.  But before that, they sent someone out to take a hammer to the screen of the old one so there was no chance of it being resold.  It was a process, but I got it replaced.

The swap begins today, provided UPS doesn’t wreck on the way here.

Been getting a little spoiled the past 8 weeks, working from the couch on my laptop.

Back to the cave tomorrow though.

That’s ridiculous for a 2 year old TV. Hopefully that’s still under warranty and you get a replacement.

3 years, and it's not. Hisense told me to pound sand and sent me a list of shops locally I could take it to for service on my dime. Amazon was no help, either. I've got a scheme cooked up. Will report back later.

Unless that's the first two frames of Star Wars, yeah, no bueno.

Sucks, but it's just a cheaper-to-replace situation.  I'm hard pressed to splurge for much these days.

Not full HT just main living room TV w/ a Denon 2.1 SB and Apple 4K streamer, but was able to convince Mrs GOTJ to divert some funds from the main bedroom
/bathroom remodel to replace our 7 YO LG OLED that had developed some burn in plus the infamous green blob. This was a very high end OLED at the time of purchase (it was installed in our CEO's satellite office; turned on twice in 18 mos). When the site relocated across town it was given to me as a "thank you."

Picture was excellent, but the image burn & green distortion was becoming increasingly noticeable over the last 6 months. Disappointing for a display w/ maybe 5 years total use by two of us. Viewing only. No gaming.

Pulled the trigger on a Samsung QN90D Neo QLED lastSunday. Will arrive Fri. I'll live w/ the less than perfect black levels of QLED vs OLED for longer life span. Hoping that the Samsung dashboard & Smart landing page can be easily deactivated so it just powers to the input the A4KTV box will be connected to and Mrs GOTJ doesn't notice any change in UI.

Those cock sucking mother fuckers.

The “replacement” just died. Splash screen pops up when you turn it on, then it goes dark. Not a drop of light coming out.

5. Fucking. Days.

Busted out the old one. Good thing I was out of tape and had to get some, or it would have shipped back today. Luck on that part, but I’m so fucking pissed right now.

Paid $4k for my 2015 Sony 75 FALD display and still works flawlessly. Near OLED black levels. I have browsed some upgrades but just not warranted at this time.

i had previous failures with cheaper sets, and Sony’s mid to high tier of sets has come down in price significantly.  Worth it IMO.  Mattress/Couch/TV get the most non appliance usage in the home

My 2008 Samsung full-array LED ran just shy of that and still is rocking along and looking good.

Same brand ~ 2008 in our bedroom.  It's still the best picture in our house.  (We haven't upgraded from traditional LCD tech yet.  I really don't like replacing working TVs.)

Any of you guys do Ultra 4K blu-rays? I have a pretty decent Blu-ray player but it's definitely outdated now. I was all set on streaming 1080p to 4K movies until I saw some that had either bad audio or mixes that made them hard to listen to without jacking the volume up to absurd levels. It's mostly anything on Max which is most of the WB catalog. We have an Apple TV 4K unit but the audio can be compressed or mixed terribly.

Now I've gone to purchasing Blu-rays on the cheap since the audio quality is incredible and you can get most for under $10. Would stepping up to 4K blu-rays be worth it? I don't have Dolby Atmos or 7.1. Watched the blu-ray for Pulp Fiction over the weekend and it looked and sounded great. Not sure the 4K would be that much of a step up. Or would it?

I bought into the whole UHD disk thing a few years back, but stopped at around 20. It just really depends on the movie and how the transfer was done. Some look identical to their 1080p BluRay release and some look better. https://www.blu-ray.com/ and Reddit have hundreds of threads discussing which UHD is "worth it".

I only have a few of the most recommended, like Blade Runner 2049 and the newest Avatar.

I remember when SACD came out.  I bought a Marantz CD player that could play that format.  I purchased several duplicate discs and started to get the nagging feeling they weren't any better.  I had a friend run a blind test on me, and yep, I couldn't hear the difference.  That doesn't mean there weren't any differences, but my aging ears undoubtably damaged by a few decades of Marshall amps and rock drummers couldn't identify whatever difference existed.  Beware of "improvements".

Had these on my sub for about a week. They definitely help and are worth it, but it’s not a 100% fix. Maybe 70%.

Still impressive and worth it though.

Ya know, fuck all this.

Let’s move on to replacement #3.

Why?

Replacement #2 decided it doesn’t want to keystone (fine adjust via software) the image.

Get it wide enough, and there’s a 1/2”+/- overhang at the top on the wall.

Won’t move a lick.

Contacted support rep. At this point it will either be another replacement attempt, a replacement with the “top” model, or a full refund. Not sure which will happen, they're working on it.

Guess I better go check out the competition. Which sucks. When these work, and apparently I’m some sort of outlier case, the picture is stunning. That’s why I got it.

But damn. Maybe don’t send a refurbished unit as a replacement.

I would counter with if you're talking about 2.0 SACD to 2.0 CDs over RCA stereo cables, sure they're going to sound the same. If you have a system that can process DSD audio, there is a difference as most of them have been better mastered than the old redbook. DSD files are what Sony went to for a lot of their catalog since the master tapes were breaking down. The real plus originally of SACD and DVD-Audio was getting 5.1 audio for albums that were traditionally only in mono or stereo. It was able to separate the channels so you were getting different bits of audio out of each channel in your 5.1 setup. The 5.1 SACD I have of Roxy Music's Avalon is 10X better than a 2.0 version. Same with other SACD titles like Sea Change by Beck that were done in 5.1. That same option is now available in blu-rays that come with remastered versions of things like the Beatles and Pink Floyd. Sounds pretty damn good in 5.1 or Dolby Atmos.

Are you saying certain music sounds better in 7.2 than stereo?

Not necessarily better since stereo is how you're always experienced the music but it's definitely unique and can be very enjoyable. It all depends how it is mixed. It can pull more content out of the original recording because you're getting parts or instrumentation that were pushed down in the original stereo mastering. It gives you more of a dropped in effect where you're feeling like you're in the mixing booth or they are performing in front of you.
