Nah, I don't think @ztejas deserves to be lumped in with those freaks. We don't get along or agree most of the time, but he's not a bad faith shitposter like those two.

I need you to understand that my Texas fandom isn't a choice - it's a fucking disease. I was born into this. Molded by it. I went elsewhere for school but this shit will never escape me.

Your path is more straightforward. Mine is paved with the likes of Charlie Strong and Tom Herman.

Can someone let me in on this Amy Grant stuff? I don’t listen to Christian music because I’m not Christian and I think it sucks but I know of her because she grew up in Nashville and went to Harpeth Hall and Harpeth Hall is the same school that my Texas roommate’s sister went to. It is a private all girls school in Bell Meade. Anyway, I don’t know her background story that you guys are referring to.

Tell me you’ve never worked as a roadie and have never shacked up on the road with a Christian pop singer who received Grammy nominations for song and album of the year in the early 90s, while she was having problems with her husband, and it just so happened that she had passed through several towns where a string of arsons and attempted murders took place that involved a rival musician without telling me you did, and where witnesses described the main suspect as a woman in her 30s running around with a man who looked to be 10 years younger than her.

That kind of experience would have cemented in you the notion that a well-paid law firm can easily shut down any questioning from police and deflect blame elsewhere.

All I know is one of my best friends was obsessed with her. She was his second big crush. (First one was Kim M. who worked in the Karmalkorn in the Selma Mall, look on their works, ye mighty, and despair!) Dude was bad gone. He finally got him a New Orleans girlfriend who looked like her. Then at his accounting job his crooked bosses and crooked "friends" pressured him to do dishonest stuff, and he snapped. Started hearing demonic voices, couldn't work. But then he had a second act, because he had plenty of Alpha left in him-- he became President of the Hearing Demonic Voices Society, and would travel the country leading meetings and helping people.

But then the alcohol got him. I'd get a call from some shitbox motel on Southside and go take him a sandwich, He'd be sitting there, skinnier than I last saw him, a couple of empty handles of vodka and one almost full that he'd just give to me. I'd take him to the hospital, a rehab, sometimes my house for a meal. Repeat in a few weeks. Dude was never fat and he turned into a stick. We had a falling out after I bumbled a "scare you sober" attempt. Last time I saw him was at a 4th of July party. Got a call saying he loved me. Then he died in a Bessemer halfway house.

I drank free vodka for a couple months after that. Drank it straight, out of coffee cups.

While we are exchanging CCA tales, I had a friend once offer to set me up as Jaci Velazquez’ plus one for some function she was attending in the RGV at the beginning of her career.  I didn’t accept, as I recall I was trying to capture the attention of a fellow lifeguard at the city pools at the time and because as a good Campbellite youth I had no idea who she was.  Metallica and Sublime was fine, fun secular music but Christian pop was frowned upon and also sucked.

Just wanted to drop by and confirm Joe Rogan is a meathead that peaked on News Radio. I think he spent too much time hanging with Andy Dick.

Having met the entire cast and enjoyed a dinner at Phil and Bree Hartman‘s house, I can confirm that Rogan is a meathead.  But his meat headedness has nothing to do with the insane dumbfuck that is Andy Dick.    If John Lovitz thought he could get away with a hit on Andy, he’d be a dead man.

He deployed to Afghanistan with the 25th Infantry Division. His Troop Commander during the deployment, Rich Groen, posted to Twitter that he was a good soldier who did his work with “care and precision.” He served in their S1 shop, which is the personnel section of an Army unit that handles pay, administrative management, and mail among other tasks. He was not a line combat trooper and its likely he probably only left the base for mail convoys or other administrative missions in support of the unit.

___

He had remarried in 2017 but was divorced in 2022. During those proceedings he had sent an email to his ex-partner’s lawyer where he wrote that he could not make payments on the house they owned, saying at the time he was $27,000 behind in payments.

He went on to disclose that he was $16,000 in credit card debt and that the three businesses he founded were profitless, one of them losing $28,000. The records say that he's a father of three and was ultimately ordered to pay his last wife $1,353 a month in child support.

It appears Jabbar last worked for the large consulting and accounting firm, Deloitte. They hire many veterans and support numerous government contracts. He served in a "staff-level role" since being hired in 2021, a spokesperson for the firm confirmed to ABC News. His title at Deloitte was "senior solution specialist.” Multiple reports say his salary was $120,000 though I have not found a confirmation of that.

Doubt he ever left the wire.

Deloitte is massive. A senior solutions specialist is mid range corporate support. Maybe on a contract. 120K is upper mid. Not out of line at all.

What is odd is a lot of these companies make you shut down any existing companies due to potential conflict of interest, etc.

They have government and commercial contracts. Houston was/is one of their support hubs. But they have offices everywhere.

It had to happen. So that you learned.

Me my missed moment was not meeting and hanging out with a friend-of-friend's folksinger daughter 5 minutes before she hit it big on college radio. Suzanne Vega. That was back when I was a cute young tadpole not an old toad.

Doot doot doot doot, doot da doot doot, doot dot doot doot doot da doot doot.

For better or worse, for a lot of marginalized minority communities, churches are one of the few social institutions they've got, particularly when the religion In question is nearly as ethnic as it is religious, e.g. Jews and Muslims.  So, those churches wind up advising their congregations on more than matters spiritual.

I generally abhor mixing politics/government and religion, but I am a tad more understanding of it for these types of churches and the communities they serve.

I still hate it though.  In this particular case, it's not a 501 religious exemption issue, though.  But as long as black churches preach politics, that's going to be fairly untouchable.

Seems like the Vegas guy may have really been an accident. Dude was apparently a big Trumper. Seems to me there's a decent-to-strong possibility he was also an Elon fan, rented a Cybertruck because he thought they're cool, and was planning to go camp in the desert and shoot off a bunch of fireworks. Then the Cybertruck caught fire because, well, they just do that sometimes, or perhaps fumes were leaking from the camping fuel he had in the back and ignited.

Of course, from the "it was intentional" angle, he is divorced.

That one held together for all of about 5 seconds.

The Vegas suicide seems to me to be about the public feud between Musk and a faction of MAGA over immigration. If this statement crosses a line, then we need a CR thread.

We don't need a CR thread. We just need you to post less.

No Cloakroom, so I'll tread lightly, but I just heard that the incoming Border Czar believes that there is, in fact, a terrorism connection with the two attacks in Vegas and New Orleans.

He details his Intel here:

Something about the way this tastes makes Tom Homan want to clear his throat. There’s a message to the suspect’s movements that really gets his goat.

So I assume the folks who rented these vehicles aren’t getting them back. I wonder how that call to State Farm goes.

If there is any coverage to the vehicle it is likely through the rental service. Their personal auto is going to public or livery conveyance exclusion that shit.

And who can forget her rendition of The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late) with Alvin and the boys?
