Well, I disagree that there was no way to get off an "accurate" shot.  It was a 500 yard target.  Sniper distance, for sure, but maybe he didn't have that skill.  I honestly don't know if he had something in for Aldean or if it was just garden variety terroristic mayhem.  I don't recall any definitive reports.

500 meters may or may not be "sniper distance."  Green fucking Marine recruits, many of whom have never held a weapon, much less fired one; qualify with open sights at 500 meters.  Dude's background was auditing/ accounting; so he didn't necessarily have the military training, but he damned sure had the equipment to easily pull off a 500 meter shot.

Re: targeting Aldean:  According to his girlfriend, Paddock repeatedly cased Las Vegas Village from different windows in their room when they stayed at the Mandalay Bay a month before the shooting.[16] Paddock also may have considered attacking other events. He had researched large-scale venues in cities such as Boston since at least May 2017[15] and had reserved a room overlooking the August 2017 Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, but did not use it.[17] From September 17, Paddock stayed at The Ogden in Downtown Las Vegas, which overlooked the open-air Life is Beautiful festival that ran from September 22 to 24.[16][8] Paddock's internet search terms from mid-September included "swat weapons", "ballistics chart 308", "SWAT Las Vegas", and "do police use explosives"

By never fired a weapon, do you mean they spend several days learning how to use it and gradually increasing range to learn the fundamentals? Also, unless I’m misreading table 1 of MCO 3574.2M, those green marines could technically whiff every shot at 500 yards and still qualify. Regardless, I don’t care how anyone defines “sniper distance” … a 500 yard open sight hit under pressure is impressive and requires practice.

Range week is...well...a week.

The bigger point is that knucklehead in Vegas was very capable of making a 500m shot with the equipment in his possession. It wouldn't appear he had a specific target in mind beyond the venue in general, especially with regard to Aldean.

Sorry but you are wrong.  Marine recruits ain't gonna hit 500 meters with an iron sight.  99 percent of the world isn't hitting 500 meters with a scope.  My .308 is sighted to 500 yards and that is incredibly hard

Sorry to disappoint, but...

Every Marine recruit qualifies at 200m offhand/ standing, 300m kneeling/ sitting, and 500m prone.  Open sights, and typically, you make up points at the 500m line, but what the fuck do I know?

I assume different targets. I don't think I could see a bullseye at 500M.

It looks like rifle qual changed in 2018, but the 500m line is still involved.    https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/your-marine-corps/2021/02/23/the-new-marine-corps-rifle-qualification-is-here/

All I know is this shit was drilled in our head so much, I can still recite it 35 years later, "Sir, sight alignment is correct when the front sight post is centered both vertically and horizontally in the rear sight aperture, Sir."

Yes.  Open sights.  and yes the targets vary in size for what yard line you are firing from.

Indeed.  500m= 546yards and some change.  It further illustrates the point.

Not a big deal that we need to argue, but you are reversing them.  The US military measures their distances in yards.  You are shooting at 500 yard targets etc.. not meters.

500 yards is 457 meters

In all fairness, anyone that posts on this board probably needs to be on a watch list of one form or the other. But it would be interesting to ask the mods about which posters here have triggered interactions with LEOs, and what the profile of the posted content was.

I would think most, if not all, of those posters who triggered interactions with LEOs are no longer posting. TxTow is in prison, NowThis probably had more than six dildos which is against the law in Texas, etc..

What did TxTow do? I missed that whole thing I guess. Also, who was the weird guy who kept bragging about fucking underage girls in Thailand that was inexplicably tolerated in DT for years?

I believe Txtow was a crusader against tow companies, and got quite a bit of run on surly bc of it, as literally everyone hates tow companies. Then it turned out he was hucking large rocks onto I-35, got arrested, and was eventuall revealed to be a pedophile? THE ARISTOCRATS!

I’ll be there tomorrow for the first of many visits this year. I’m sure it’s going to feel a lot different than it used to. One of my favorite restaurants is just a block from where this all happened. I may avoid it this time. I’m not sure I want to be near there right now. Not out of fear, but it seems disrespectful go by where this happened. Is that wrong?

That’s certainly a valid and reasonable perspective.

Another is that maintaing everyday life invalidates the terrorism/ wingnut bullshit.

Ultimately it comes down to you, and what your feelings are towards it all.

I don't think it's disrespectful to do your part to prevent a place you genuinely liked from going out of business due to this event.

Yeah, I’m leaning towards going anyway because fuck terrorists. I just meant that it felt borderline disrespectful to be sitting at the bar having drinks and making small talk when something so abhorrent happened just around the corner and less than a week ago.

Staying away would be nothing but self-centered bullshit to make yourself feel better. Go back, patronize the businesses you usually do, talk to people like you normally would. Not going about your business as usual would be the disrespectful part.

You’re visiting TxTow in prison?

Edit: Never mind, just caught up with the other posts.

Maybe. Maybe not. We just recently had a thread get ghosted from this board full of posters doing their best to get themselves put on a government watchlist, or at least a door knock. It prompted a reminder from the board owner that the popos can read surly and that the board will comply with any requests for information from law enforcement. I figured there was some more background to that reminder, but maybe not.
