Maybe I’m wrong but I think Texas or Ohio State will beat ND or Pedo St.

I mean, I feel the same way, but you don’t know how injuries and shit will shake out in the semifinals. But on paper, the winner of the Cotton Bowl should be the favorite.

James Franklin’s shitty big game rep should not be overlooked just because his path to the CFP finals would be a meh SMU team, a G5 and ND.

Sure they have a chance.

Every team left has a chance. Feels good to be on the final 4. Now if we can just put together a 4 quarter game on both sides of the ball

We won't, but it's a nice dream which I would like to share. Sark hasn't made half time offensive adjustments all year and he's not starting the next game.

We have to hope our D keeps it close and we get a couple quarters of Michigan Quinn. Oh... and our special teams isn't required for points and doesn't bend over AGAIN on a fake punt. Cause there is nearly a 100% chance OSU is going to run one.

Yeah, people who weren't alive or following sports will never really understand the build up of Texas vs USC. I believe it remains the only time in history #1 and #2 held those positions all year and their met up with 3 Heisman candidates/winners in opposing back fields.

100% Spot on. The most hyped game ... by far.

Everyone knew Texas and USC were head-and-shoulders-and-torsos above all the other teams. No other teams even close.

Plus, something that will never be duplicated is the combined winning streaks of USC and Texas. USA was riding a 34-game streak, while Texas had won 19 straight. A combined 53-game streak!

Plus, an entire season of sheer on-field electricity from VY and Reggie Bush, two of the most electric players of all-time.

Plus, California and Texas, the two most populous states. Mythologies and stereotypes: Hollywood vs Big Oil, etc. Big-time celebs galore. Guaranteed a massive audience for the title game. That audience size may never be duplicated, for all the reasons above.

And what's most amazing ... the game not only lived up to the hype. It FAR exceeded it. Perhaps the greatest college game of all time.

Except social media didn't exist then.  And every big game is the biggest game EVAR!!!!!!!

Think Cotton Bowl is de facto NC game.

Yeah Penn State has no chance beating either of these teams. UGA beat Texas twice but without a QB that may be a tougher task.

Please God beat Ohio State, they can not win it all, and a ND/O$U championship game would be so disgusting to watch.

People are going to be taken back a bit at the ability of Georgia's back up Gunnar Stockton. He broke the HS records of some pretty well known QBs both running and passing namely Trevor Lawrence and Deshawn Watson. He's the son of a good college player and has been in the Georgia system for a while. Smart has known him basically his entire life. He doesn't have the name recognition of Texas' back up, but he's got an impressive HS resume. Does it mean he'll perform, no guarantees, but I certainly wouldn't say that Georgia is "without a QB"

Buckle up for a lot of articles just like this: “No one is stopping this Ohio State team”IMG_6233.thumb.png.99d573fe6a6d3fbaf47353c213b92d2f.png

I think winning a game like last night was akin to Texas eeking out the victory against Nebraska in 2009. Sometimes you play like shit but you survive and advance. Texas will be ready. Every game is it's own season, just because OSU beat Tenn and Oregon by a lot does not mean they will beat us by a lot. They have been very inconsistent throughout the year. If we can get a few stops early they will start to really tighten up.

Most UGA fans prefer Stockton to Beck.  Some of that is backup syndrome, but there is a palpable disgust with Beck's fuckery this year.

Yeah.. Beck's play has been pretty hit and miss this year at times. When you add that to fucking a social media star 10 and driving a Lamborghini it's gonna generate some hate.

Yep. How many times has some 1 seed played like shit and eked out a 3 point victory in March Madness and everyone is like oh man thy are cooked in the next round and then come out and kick ass.

Every game is different.

This is true for Ohio State too. Last 2 games they’ve looked insane but they’ve also had some real clunkers this year. Some people on this board are acting like they’ve dominated everybody all year.

This is a hard game to predict because both Texas and OSU have insane talent with the ability to step on their own dicks. Both teams going to show up or is somebody gonna have another meh performance? Inconsistency of both teams makes this a weird game.

I'm not even saying OP is wrong because tOSU/Texas is a wet dream semifinal for the Mouse, but when it comes to most hyped/viewed games ever people still don't understand how fucking ridiculous Texas/SC was.

Lets dig in to the numbers since 1998 (this isn't including 2023).

https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/college-football-playoff-ratings-bcs-history/

First - I want to set a bar to compare it against. The NFL is obviously king and its typical numbers blow everyone else out of the water. Going back about 30 years, however, the NBA Finals are actually an interesting data set that proves fairly analagous when comparing the highest rated games between both spots (NBA and cfb) - granted - on average, cfb does much better.

The biggest single-game NBA contests we've seen since Jordan's 2nd 3-peat run are as follows:

2016 game 7, Golden State vs. Cleveland - 15.6 rating (a massive number that the NBA Finals game-by-game is lucky to get half of these days)

2013 game 7, Spurs vs. Heat - 15.3

2010 game 7, Celtics vs. Lakers - 15.6

2000 game 6, Lakers vs. Pacers (LA's first Finals appearance in a decade) - 14.8

Those are all numbers that the NBA would kill for and isn't getting anymore. The most watched Finals series of all time was 1998 (understandably) and it did absolute monster numbers culminating with an absurd 22.3 in game 6.

The College Football Playoff has actually rarely seen games get above a 10 rating (rating being what % of viewers are tuned in to that channel). You can go back to the link I posted to see that.

The first iteration of the CFP in 2014 did really well, in part owing to some huge brands being involved. Ohio State/Oregon for the title in particular was a killer and put up an ad agency's wet dream with an 18.6. The two semis also did well - each sporting around a 15 rating.

Since then it's been a mixed bag. Alabama tended to carry good ratings - with a 15.0 in the title game in 2015 against Clemson and peaking with a 15.7 in the title game against Georgia in 2017. Outside of that, the highest rated games have been LSU/Clemson in 2019 with a 14.3 and Clemson/Bama in 2018 with a 13.8.

No other game im recent years has done better than a 12 rating (granted last season's data isn't on the chart).

Some of the best BCS title games did around a 17 or 18 - including games like Texas/Bama in 2009 and OU/FSU in 2000.

All that said - you ready?

Texas/SC in the 05 season did a TWENTY ONE POINT FUCKING SEVEN. No other game since 1998 has even come within a point of a 20 rating let alone blew the top off by almost 2 points.

It was just as watched as Michael Jordan's - maybe the greatest American athlete of all-time - FINAL Finals game to secure a 2nd 3-peat in 1998.

Could something ever surpass Texas/SC? Theoretically, sure, but it would take such an absurd amount of combined storyline and hype and drama to even crack 20 again.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

Agree 100%.  And I’ll add the venue is/was unlike any other in sports, perhaps the Masters is an apt analogy.

The Rose Bowl is a character in the story.  Pasadena , the fact that VY had a record performance one year prior.  All that you mentioned is spot on plus add the Rose Bowl, the grand-daddy of them all.  If it was the fiesta or cotton , it would not have contributed to the build up like the Rose Bowl, for that given game, given all that USC was about for a decade in that town.   Remember LA was floundering sports city while the Trojans were running herd on the cfb landscape.

May the best team win but I just want fucking consistency by refs calling penalties especially holding.

Spot on. 100%!

No doubt, USC was the rock star team in LA. I have several friends and cousins in the Southern California area: Some are USC fans, some are UCLA fans. I had phone calls with some from both camps before the Texas-USC game. Most agreed that Reggie Bush could have a big game.

But all were all wondering just what the hell VY was going to dial up! ESPN was hyping Trojans as possible best ever college team, but UCLA cousins said there was under-the-radar murmuring in So Cal football world about whether USC could stop ... or even slow down VY-Texas offense.

-- Trojan cousins admitted they were very fearful of VY factor. Like no other player they faced in the 34-game win streak. They saw what he did in the Rose Bowl the year prior. They saw that 45-13 wipeout of OU (who USC wiped out the year before) and the 70-3 demolition of Colorado in Big 12 title game. So did Pete Carroll and the Trojan defense.

Frankly, it seemed like there was some fear (not cowardice) and panic by USC during last two Texas drives. Especially after that 4th down stop by Texas.

Fear and panic like: "Oh Shit!!! ... Here comes fucking Vince Young" !?!?!??!

The rest is history. "4th and 5. National Championship on the line....He's going for the corner ...."
