Changing kickers is going to be a big deal. Bert has sucked and legit cost us the ASU game from going to OT by missing a very easily makeable centered by quinn for final TO kick.

Let's not forget the other game that he could have won too. Hell, we might have been in the other bracket.

That whole targeting discussion drives me crazy. If it was targeting, then they missed the attempted decapitation of Bond a few plays earlier. If it wasn't, then they got them right. The two calls were both reviewed and the outcomes were consistent. Any notion that the Taafe call tarnished the outcome for one side is fucked. But the media loves an underdog and seems to relish piling on big bad Texas. Embrace the hate.

Here is the rule verbatim.

Quote

Targeting and Making Forcible Contact to Head or Neck Area of a Defenseless Player

ARTICLE 4. No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent (See Note 2 below) with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul (Rules 2-27-14 and 9-6). (A.R. 9-1-4-I-VI)

Note 1: “Targeting” means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball. Some indicators of targeting include but are not limited to:

• Launch—a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area

• A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground

• Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area

• Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet

Note 2: Defenseless player (Rule 2-27-14). When in question, a player is defenseless. Examples of defenseless players include but are not limited to:

• A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass.

• A receiver attempting to catch a forward pass or in position to receive a backward pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier.

• A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return.

• A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick, or one who has completed a catch or recovery and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier..

• A player on the ground.

• A player obviously out of the play.

• A player who receives a blind-side block.

• A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward progress has been stopped. RE 9 / CC F PER ER JEC RE FR-89

• A quarterback any time after a change of possession • A ball carrier who has obviously given himself up and is sliding feetfirst.

The beauty of the rule is that it allows for interpretation.

Based on Note 1, it could be interpreted that Taaffe did not meet any of the indicators.  If there was no question/doubt, then it was not a foul.  They could also reasonably assume that the player was not defenseless in that particular situation.

Based on Note 1, at least 2 of 4 indicators were met on the Isaiah Bond play.  If Bond has laid on the ground, I bet it would have been ruled targeting.

OSU has the pressure on them, like they did with meat chicken at home. Now THEY have to live up to their other-worldly hype, and overcome the intoxicationg huffing of  their own chili spaghetti  farts for 8 days. THEY have to have a great game, THEY are quite capable of shitting down their jorts. Pressure is on THEM.

Coincidentally, the centering of the ball was the difference between Bert making the kick and doinking it off the left upright. But thankfully it didn’t cost us the game, so we don’t have to spend the whole offseason questioning that one play call to center the ball.

Agree, "legal tackle" was where Taaffe was cleared and leading with the shoulder and launching at the head/neck area on Bond was clear to me IMHO.

If we have a 4th and 2, let's hope that means hitting Wingo on a very quick slant and not a predictable and slow-developing run up the gut.

10 points (or more) in the 3rd quarter.

Honestly, they 4th and short jet sweep gave me mixed feelings.

1. Sweet, 1st down

2. WTF, Texas cant just run the ball up the gut on an undersized DL.

If you have not watched Sark’s Cotton Bowl presser I recommend it, he looks as pissed as I have ever seen him. He looks super dialed in and sick but f being told how shitty Texas is.

asked about OSU receivers and I am paraphrasing but he basically said “going to be tough matchup and I hope we have guys that can cover them” in a super terse, intense manner.

I think Sark is treating this like championship game. Especially given playing OSU to start next season.

Ohio Stater arrogance is dizzying. They are acting like a win against Texas and a national championship is in the bag. Hope Sark gets the run game fixed and the team hyped for this game. All the parts are there for a win. Go Horns.

Who is they?  Our mongoloid fanbase?

Not this guy.  I just want to win by a point.  Just win the fucking game.

I wouldn’t use OSU’s Michigan game as a barometer for anything - it is a season outlier more often than not.  But generally you’re right…OSU fans are as shocked as everyone else about the last two games, since the team had never really looked like that all year, even in comfortable wins.  Two games is not enough of a trend to bank on, so most assume we’ll come back down to earth somewhat now.

Is it an outlier? Or are the last two weeks the outlier? The Penn State game, Nebraska, and Michigan games suggest the latter. OSU's offense performed essentially the same in both Oregon games. It was the defense that was the difference.

The offense was actually decent against PSU - consistent and effective.  Closed the game out with manball; Henderson averaged 5.5/carry and Judkins 6.8.  What set us back and made the game close was turnovers - a pick 6 from Will to start the day and he also fumbled going into the endzone to kill another drive.  14 points directly on those two plays.

This is the type of game I expect to see on Friday - good production but nowhere near the same explosiveness as against Tenn and Oregon.  The turnovers are the thing - Howard (or anyone else) gives the ball away like that and I expect we lose.

Cover3 podcast was talking about this game.

They said Texas is the best DL they've faced all year and the only other comparable DL was Michigan who gave them issues. Ohio State is down 2 starting OL but have been surviving because they haven't really faced a ton of talented defensive fronts.

I think our DL can create issues in this game.

Bud Elliott and Tom Fornelli of Cover 3 and a few other national podcasts I listen to are all saying that Ohio St is running a totally different offense from what they ran during the regular season. One of the PFF guys believes they're running a lot of the stuff Mike Norvell ran at Memphis and Florida St. It just so happens that one of the Ohio State offensive assistants or off field coaches was a former assistant under Norvell. If what they're theorizing is true then it would explain why the Buckeyes are having so much disproportionate  offensive success compared to their regular season.

Seems completely impossible.

Sure it didn’t help that the first three questions were from some Ohio St homer, Chip, then Bohls.

They were sure they would roll Michigan too.  Remember when Nebraska made that revenge video in 2010?  Overconfidence doesn’t work well vs Texas.

Need some help from the ball knowers in here. Is this an RPO? The way the OL doesn't fire off the ball it makes me think there might be an option for Ewers to pull it and throw? Am I wrong there? Not criticizing anyone if so, just genuinely curious. I finally found a few minutes to sit down and start looking through the ASU game.

It might be. Bond is the only one who looks like he kinda sorta might think he'll get the ball, but an RPO is typically one read. Moore and Golden are just decoys either way. Bond could just be selling. The OL is zone blocking, I wouldn't necessarily say they aren't firing off but they could be trying to make sure they don't go downfield immediately. But that's also just kind of what zone blocking looks like from that angle.

From my model:

Ohio State is the #1 team  - Texas is number 2.

Ohio State is the #1 defense  - Texas is number 2.

Both defenses have been consistent all season.  OSU is 5th in defensive consistency and Texas is 13th.

Neither defense has been tested thoroughly.  OSU is #133(!) in defensive confidence while Texas is 121.

-

Ohio State is the #4 offense in my model.   - Texas is #11.

The Texas offense has been tested thoroughly and ranks #3 in offensive confidence.  OSU is mildly untested at #78.

-

The model has Texas +5.5, so mostly agrees with Vegas, but it expects a low-scoring affair.

My model is NASA missile launch grade and it has Texas putting an alligator skin boot in their ass and showing their insides some style.
