Can Texas run the ball against the Ohio St defense?

If Texas can run the ball, this will be a tight game going into the 4th quarter. The offense needs to sustain some drives so the defense isn’t gassed in the 4th quarter.

I don’t think anybody should be called a pussy for being impressed with what Ohio Stste has done the last two weeks. They had the toughest draw in the field and completely annihilated both teams right out of the gate. Shock and awe both first quarters, and the games were over.

i think Will Howard is a spare but there’s no denying the talent at WR and that defense is elite at all three levels. Our two games against the only comparably talented team we played in Georgia don’t necessarily inspire confidence and this Texas team has shown a distinct ability to play with its food and just be generally inconsistent on offense, not to mention our place kicking woes.

That said, I like the intangibles in this game for Texas. Ohio State will hear how invincible they are for the next 9 days. Texas is a fantastic underdog. Texas can hang its hat on clutching up when they needed it most, which they have essentially done all season to varying degrees. Texas has played dominating football all year but the scoreboard hasn’t always reflected the dominance.

Horns are going to have to play their best game of the season to win, and they are a td dog for a reason. But it’s not too difficult to see a path forward to win. Gonna need great db play. Ewers is going to have to be special. If we could get some running game going, that would be helpful. And we can’t afford to lose the turnover battle.

Great post Mitch and I agree.

This Texas team counted out and bet against is the most dangerous squad you could possibly run into this season. Ohio State may be good enough to make it moot but one thing I do know for sure is that they're going to get a fuckin ball game.

We saw flashes of Good Quinn yesterday - I think if we get that guy for even 3 of 4 Qs we will hang and probably beat them.

I think the populace is forgetting and/or underslling how good and how disgustingly talented this Texas team is.

Has anyone seen if we get a Big 12 crew or ACC crew for this one?  I think officiating across the board is pretty much garbage but all things considered hoping it's an ACC crew without the old biases.

PK coached against Chip Kelly as a DL coach for Boise State.
Johnny Nansen has extensive experience working with and against Chip Kelly though.

We really need to let our nuts hang in this one like Arizona State did against us, Ohio State is super tough to come back against.

Going to need like 3.5 a carry from called runs. OSU secondary is a different animal than ASU. Texas is not going to have WRs running open all game like ASU. The safeties are legit.  If there is a weakness it is at CB. Davison Igbinosun has struggled. I would target him. He loves to committ Pass Interference

Cover3 podcast was talking about this game.

They said Texas is the best DL they've faced all year and the only other comparable DL was Michigan who gave them issues. Ohio State is down 2 starting OL but have been surviving because they haven't really faced a ton of talented defensive fronts.

I think our DL can create issues in this game.

OSU offensive line is not very good. Skill positions are ungodly. It comes down to Will Howard. You have to find a way to make him uncomfortable and get bad Will.

The game will be decided in the trenches & which QB decides to make more WTF TOs. We know QE is good for at least 1 a game, can we force Howard into 2 or 3?

Well we know the defense can get the job done. It’s the offense

The way the TX and tOSU game turned out couldn't have psychologically benefited us more IMO

Unit wise, every aspect of the offense and defense got challenged by an inferior opponent. tOSU comes in moderately heavy favorites after demolishing Oregon in a revenge game. The coaching points are going to be very different over the next 8 days.

MASSIVE confidence boost for Quinn. Feels like a turning point. He knows he can spin it in the most important moments. Complacency from Howard and Smith setting in?

Run game got physically demolished by UGA in both games and run game blew up in the games following. Hoping for the same vs talented tOSU front

Defense top to bottom has carried this team all year. Howard + WR magic going to run out at some point and may as well be against us.

(Wish I could say that I feel good about Bert but ran out of sunshine)

Feels like tOSU poised for a letdown and we are playing for each other. Just feels like this team is special and going to surprise us on Friday. In the Cotton Bowl of all places

I don't know if anyone is champing at the bit to know what tOSU fans are saying about this game, but I always like to visit opponents' boards to see their perspective. I know there's a lot of hate around here for all things tOSU -- not for without reason because of the 2005 UT fan experience in Columbus. The posters on this particular board don't come across as being like the Washington clowns from last year.

So, here's a link (click or don't; your decision): https://www.elevenwarriors.com/forum/ohio-state-football/2025/01/152301/on-to-texas-thoughts-on-them-after-az-game

tl;dr: Overall reasonable analysis, except for a couple of blowhard asshats.

I know it sounds nuts but just get this game to the 2nd half within 3-7 either way and then see in that situation which coach can mind fuck himself less. My money is on Sark.

Your money is on us outscoring an opponent in the second half? Interesting.

I agree, especially with the assessment that this feels very similar to the early-2000’s Horns.  The question is whether or not this team can break through “now” or if they are awaiting this generation’s Vince Young to get over the top.  It’s been refreshing to see dominance along the lines these last couple of years after that aspect of the program being almost completely absent after the 2005 National Championship team

can't start a streak without doing something once. why not now? but seriously, I feel like we've been holding a little back all season. very few trick plays, especially on special teams. kinds like we've been playing with an ace up our sleeve all season and have been patient about when we pull it out. or we get our teeth kicked in. one of the two will probably happen.

More it is that I have seen what Ryan Day typically does in big games that are close in the second half and I have seen what Sark has done in big games that are close in the second half and I am betting on Sark to mind fuck himself somewhat less than Day.

For the first time this year, we have nothing to lose

We have a semifinal playoff game to lose.  That's something to lose.  Something pretty significant.

And yes, I understand the meaning of the meaning of the phrase "nothing to lose." But it still seems like an odd comment.

One thing Texas has been pretty good as the underdog, doesnt happen much. Seeing lines approaching a TD. Sark is going to get the play the disrespected card. Fvck, I sound like that ASU twat

Sark seems to coach better or more aggressively when we’re trailing.  That’s the guy we need.  Not the clock killer

Yep. This is the kind of shit we heard non-stop 2000-2010.

National relevancy means putting up with this kind of thing.

Texas is not overmatched on the lines or in overall talent. ASU had the motivation edge and had multiple big gambles work. Even with a ton of drive killing penalties not called on their OL, motivation wasn’t enough to put them over the top.

OSU is elite at the highest profile position: WR. Their running game can be stopped. Their defense is very good but their offense overall displayed real flaws this season. If playoff OSU has fixed those problems, they deserve to be a 10 point favorite. If the Texas Defense is on a different level than Oregon and the other UT, 6.5 is too high.

What's with the "Nothing to Lose" talk?
Nothing to lose might indicate a situation where you've already exceeded expectations, such as AZ State last night.

Texas has not yet exceeded expectations.  We're in the same place we ended last year.  We have yet to exceed last year.

I dont think he turtles as much as people think. 1st down calls in the 2nd half:

Drive 1: 17-3.. pass - Sack

drive 2:  safety. field position, nothing to see here

Drive 3: 17-8

              Run for 2
              Run for 6
              Pass for 8

              Pass INC

              Inside the 10 score TD

Drive 4: 24-16 ... Run - 6 (throw deep on 2nd Down and 4)

Sark did not go into run mode, even when some of us were asking for the brakes with 6 minutes to go (Drive 4). Its not turtling, its just shitty offense

Just an aside. I saw Fozzy bitching about the lack of commitment to the run. He was bitching about how many times he sees Texas throw on 1st down get and incomplete and run on 2nd. Paraphrasing "Everyone is expecting run on 2nd and long. You run it to get to 3rd and medium. That is not setting the run game up for success".
