I am doing 20,250 pushups in 2025

I set a goal in 2010 to run 1000 miles. I made it like on Dec 27 or so, but I pushed through some nagging injuries along the way and honestly my knees never fully recovered. Moral of the story is listen to your body and don’t be a slave to the goal.

I had a couple of years in my 40s where I ran at least 2 miles every day of the year.  I needed that kind of thing to make me run, but it was still pretty stupid.  The first time, my legs just hurt like hell by about March and I kept going through it.   Also had several days where I ran at midnight and ran during a really bad 6am thunderstorm in Omaha on the first day of the CWS.

I hate math, but I know that 10/day is 3,650 (confirmed this is not a leap year). I encourage Imma, because this is an awesome goal; BUT the average started at 55.5, and has already crept up to 56.3 to reach the goal. and 10 a day keeps pushing it higher.

Do you plan to finish the year doing 200/day in December? Before I tell you this isn't attainable, can I ask when you think you will do 50 in a day?

You got this, Imma!

I do 100 pushups minimum every day - usually 2 sets of 50. But a few days a week, I will do 200 - usually in sets of 70, 60, 40, and 30. I have done 100 at a time but prefer the lower number sets. I focus on form so never had any issue with my shoulders. And yeah, I do pull ups and other upper body weight work as well but I find that push ups are a really great overall upper body and core exercise.

so you can't really get to doing 100 pushups by just doing it, you have to set them out, so when I get to 15ish pushups solo I'll add a second set of 5 for a while till I get to 25/5 then do 25/10 then 30/10 then 30/15 then 45/15 then 45/20 then 50/20 then 50/25 then add a third set and do it that way. You can't just endurance train by being a psycho and blasting out as many as you can.

Because of that this becomes relatively easy from a goal perspective and chasing 100 pushups in a single go is the buildup. If I get to 50/25 by July 1 that's 13500 and if I averaged 35 (25 + 10) till July 1 that's 6300, that alone gets me the goal without even continuing after the 100 which I'll be upping the sets every 3 weeks or so by 5.

If it takes longer to work my way up to those numbers I've got plenty of padding.

In my boot camp class we used to occasionally do the pushup countdown:  alternating with a partner, each does 25 pushups, then 24, then 23 etc. down to 1.  It’s 320 pushups altogether.  Try that a couple times a week.

I did 3 pull ups today and it was enough.  I pulled up to Shipley's for breakfast, pulled up to DQ for lunch, and finally pulled up for a Snickers ice cream at the convenience store on the way home.

Lmfao.

I did 10 last night and 10 this morning. Feeling pretty good. About not missing a day yet.

20215 left.

Will probably bump up to 11 for the next 3 days after week 1 then 12 etc till I feel comfortable doing 15. Then I'll stay there for a week or so then push to 20. Same. Once I get to 25 in a row I'm gonna add a second set of 5 or 10.

Doubled to 10.

20235 left.

Easing into it so I can knock out 50 at a time. Then I'll go push to get to 100 at a time.

At tailgates next season I'll do them in front of everyone or you can join me.

That's the ticket. Double the number every day. In a few months, you be doing, what, 200 or so a day?

when you do 10 in a day, as you say, are you doing them in a row?  if you can do a set of 10 you can easily do another set of 10 a few more times in a day.  I read what you said about your strategy but cranking out a couple more sets a day will get you there quicker and if you can already knock out a set of 10 you're more than capable of doing it.

Yeah exactly. The hard part is doing a set of 25 then eventually 50 then eventually as many as I can.

Good move to post your resolution and give follow-ups. There are probably a few folks scoffing at what seems like a small daily number, but anything is big when persistence over the long term is the way. Keep it up.

Got my right knee replaced Dec. 4, so I'm curious as to when I'll be able to do a single damn pushup. Did my left knee the previous year at the same time and I started doing pushups again around May if I remember correctly. The pain in my knee was substantial at the time but not unbearable -- and a good reminder as to how much of your body you use on a pushup.

Five weeks in as of yesterday and can drive short distances without issue, walk a half-mile to work, take stairs if needed. Lots of seemingly trivial and repetitive exercises, mostly laying down, in that time. They get tiresome.

Did my first squats (assisted by straps on the wall) with no issue at PT today. Probably should have been doing them sooner.

I'm ahead of the curve, especially considering the state both of both knees when replaced. Fell two degrees short of the goal of 120-degree bend on Tuesday and took a perverse pleasure in having my therapist push down on my knee to bring it to complete flatness during inclined leg presses the same day.  Hurts when she does it (no pics, rules I know mumble mumble), but when it makes the day-long stiffness and soreness noticeably diminish later on, it's a lot easier to take.

Ran across this piece yesterday and it's got me thinking that pushups, sit-ups and other floor exercises need to be on my agenda sooner rather than later, but it may still be weeks rather than days.  Just getting onto and off of the floor will be major accomplishments with reconstructed knees and disproportionately long legs.

The push ups are just the start. As you get more fit, you'll add other exercises with it. My guess is that by the end of the year, you'll be doing 100 push ups as part of doing 100 burpees in under 15 minutes.

Keep it up. The growth is exponential.

What's the o/u on how many days (or pushups) before shoulder injury?

Why the fuck are you guys going on about a shoulder injury from pushups? The o/u is infinity there's no reason to hurt myself to do this. If it doesn't feel right I'm not gonna push it.

Years ago I had a New Year's resolution to be able to do 100 push-ups in a row.

When I got up to 70 I tore my muscle. It took a couple years before I could put on a jacket without pain.

When I realized that PT tests were Pass/Fail, I think I maxed out at 65 and called it a life.

Sorry about your muscle. I somehow managed to gimp up my own right shoulder (not doing pushups,) and finally the only thing that cured it was working it back and forth against some glorified giant rubber band. Went from a year of pain to almost normal in about 3 weeks. I love that glorified giant rubber band.

Because the shoulder is a super tight joint with a lot of muscles/ligaments involved. When someone does a shit ton of pushups or any other exercise that strengthens one of those muscles and fails to do anything to strengthen the opposing muscle, that creates an imbalance that causes impingement in the shoulder. It’ll feel like overuse, but that imbalance has pulled the ball of the joint out of alignment in the socket, thus the impingement.

It was an important lesson learned. I was probably 30 years old at the time and it never even occurred to me that I could injure myself.

Aren't push-ups like the perfect exercise? What "opposing muscle" are you not strengthening by doing push-ups? Done correctly you are basically engaging your entire body.

And @immamac stick with it dude. I'm tired and drunk but I saw this thread and hopped out of bed and fired 16 off.

I could stand to be in much better shape - there aren't a lot of better ways to do it.

Rear Deltoid, Trapezius, Latissimus Dorsi get nothing from a push-up.  Rows and pull-ups.

Plus the fact he is 50lbs overweight(his estimate).  That's significant load on the shoulders, repeatedly.   35 isn't old, but is sure as fuck isn't 18.

What the guy above me said…a good rule of thumb is to balance a pushing exercise with a pulling exercise.
