Came here to say lunges, squats and core exercises can fuck off.

10 weeks back at it with weights and resistance training, weight room and HIIT with a trainer 2x a week to go with tennis 2x a week.

yesterday was the first work out where I felt like crap the whole time, no endorphins, honeymoon phase over.

fuck lunges, squats and core exercises. Hate with the heat of a thousand suns.

This made me laugh because I can do lunges, squats and core exercises all day without issue but I've been playing tennis with the girlfriend and I say fuck tennis.

Tennis fucks with my knees. Well, that and I am terrible at tennis.

Wait, wait . . . “girlfriend?”  Don’t you mean “sugarbaby?” What’s happening?

Yeah, it's been about 6 months and slowly evolving. Apparently we both have attachment issues so we are comfortable with things progressing at a snails pace.

1v1 pickleball is a lot more fun and less intensive, but still provides a good workout. I’d give it a shot.

Muscles get stronger faster than ligaments. And since you’re new(ish) to working out, your muscles are building strength that your tendons and ligaments may not be ready for, which could increase the risk of injury.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to add some variety to your workouts. Isometrics and static holds, work your muscles in a different way and build your ligaments and tendons. Bodyweight exercises and  calisthenics develop balance, body control and overall proprioception (awareness of your body in space) This will keep you in the gym while letting the rest of your body adapt and catch up to the gains your muscles are making.

As middle aged men there’s a lot more facets to strength than lifting weights in the gym. Building balance, body control and proprioception allows our bodies to incorporate our strength and muscular gains into a literal armor that will protect us as we age.

Good luck and keep on keeping on!

Yep, biggest reason that I work in one session of yoga during my week, I've found it's been pretty good for keeping/improving my flexibility while hitting the weights the other 3-4 days a week I'm in there.

Also as a single guy I can't say it hurts that there's about a 4 to 1 ratio or better most classes.

HALP!

okay 12 weeks in, bad ass, HIIT/weights/hard tennis x2 a week, going up one more weights session that will end up 5 days a week and then I’m back to my early 40s with a flex day where I’m active but not working out, and only one day where I blah out. 3 sets of everything, personal trainer etc (she will help with my next question).

so it’s all great right?

UGH, I cannot stop eating, I’m fucking ravenous, like stuffing my face and still hungry.

i gotta get a hold of this - what’s the deal? What’s the plan? What’s the way to not gain 20 fucking pounds here?

last time around I was 10 years younger so it wasn’t as big of a deal weight wise. This time I’m in trouble.

How much weight you gaining?  Are you sure you're gaining weight at all?

muscle weight don't care about and I'm not sure how much is that. weight gain is 10 lbs though, and my waist is definitely noticing as certain active skirts/skorts i wear are getting a tad tight.

trainer said some protein before a work out - like 1 hour before - then protein (example she gave was apple and peanut butter) right after a work out to stave off the ravenous hunger that comes.  basically eat right before and right after a work out.  she also thinks my appetite will calm down in a few weeks. she's less nutrition than work out though, but she's so effing fit, she knows something.

I do this spinach, banana, peanut butter, fig, vanilla, oat milk smoothie and I think I'm going to cut the peanut butter and add peanut butter flavored protein powder. I think I'm going to just ramp up protein consumption.

really am open to thoughts. i'm feeling as good as I've felt in 7-8 years now 12 weeks in. it's amazing. i feel strong, confident, capable, my energy level has sky rocketed and I"m happy. but damn my appetite is like either a pregnant woman or a teenage boy or both right now.

If you’re gaining fat, you need a bigger calorie deficit.  If you’re gaining muscle you’re doing it right.  Kinda gotta answer that question first.

It’s both but the problem is my appetite has taken off and I’m eating more than I should and I can’t eat less I’m fucking ravenous. I’m hoping it settles in and evens out that’s what I’m being told to expect.  I’m going to time some protein snacks before and after workouts to see if that will quiet my appetite. Worked today, had an intense HIIT workout and ate some protein after and I’m still satiated 4 hours later.

Why don’t you eat some carbs that your muscles can use as fuel before you workout and save the protein for after the workout?

Ugh, Day 1 for me of trying to finally get serious about shedding some flab off the mid-section with Summer approaching. It's been a little over 2 years since I got serious about working out again and feel like I've really hit my stride in 2025. Knock on wood, but so far this year, I've mostly been able to avoid getting sick/hurt enough to miss more than a day or two and  been reliably hitting the gym 5-6 times a week. Very happy with where I am muscle-wise, but my core still looks like a 41 year old that likes good food and beer. Really want to drop 7-8 lbs by Memorial Day.

No "didn't have time to make a healthy lunch today, just gonna grab something." No "got up a little later than planned, so only 20 minutes of cardio today instead of 30+"....etc.

192 this weekend.   30 lbs since I started.   Two more pounds I’m gonna start weight training a bit instead of just cardio.   Push-ups and chin ups were depressing with the extra 30 pounds.

i’m hoping once I start weight training that my ancient metabolism will start sucking up a few more calories.

I'm pretty sure I won't be any sort of inspiration or encouragement to you, but I've never been able to do chin ups and i'm stuck at 6 push ups (3 sets) max. that's all I can do. those two exercises are total bullshit.

For pull ups just get your grip shoulder width or barely a little wider. Yeah your lats won’t get as huge but it’s well worth the lesser strain on your shoulders. I don’t think anyone in here is trying to be a competitive bodybuilder anyway. I’m my heyday I could do about 20 solid ones in a row, now I just stick to about 10 or less and do more sets of them. Push-ups I do sets of 50, hands basically under shoulders if that makes sense, and make sure your elbows are about 45 degrees and not straight out to the sides.

Start with assisted negatives for pulls ups. You'll get there. They are a great, functional exercise.

As far me, it is time to start cutting. I've been slowly upping weight the last year to 175. Although I think I have a bit more muscle than the last I reached 175, I don't really like that the scale has been steadily moving up despite what i thought was a pretty well controlled diet and 5 day strength training regime. Goal is to get back around 165. Stupid beers and getting older I guess.

I know you're doing a natural thing, but I have some suggestions on staying full.

This will form a gel in your stomach and slowly release:

This is just good and the MCTs seem to help me stay full:

I mix both of those with my oatmeal in the AM with chia seeds.  CLA and  Berberine also work.
