totally off topic, but how was living in Warsaw?  And how hot were the Polish chicks?

I loved Warsaw, it’s a really tough call whether I enjoyed living there or in Prague more.  A lot of expats and foreigners are rightfully charmed by Krakow but Warsaw is just much more livable and real.  I enjoyed living with Poles, I found them generous, funny, big-hearted, and romantic.

I think Polish and Slovak women are the most beautiful in the world. Sort of a cultural anecdote— I knew one of the people from the H&M department store who opened the first branch in Warsaw. They followed the template they had used in Moscow for inventory, etc. Hard to believe but Russia was once seen as at least an equal target for expansion as Poland.

They opened and their numbers weren’t as good as they hoped. They brought in some Polish women and quickly realized they needed to lower hemlines a bit, bring in more earth tones, scale back the glitter makeup.  Not to say that Polish women don’t turn heads and dress sexy but it’s just more restrained than the “East Euro” image.

I knew very few single guys who didn’t marry a Polish wife and the relationships usually worked out really well.

Son served there with joint operations with Polish forces and had multiple US troops "fall in love" with Polish women and want that instant wedding.  It was insane. From my perspective on the phone this side of the Atlantic it was downright hilarious when combined with pre-existing junior enlisted tendencies.

He too liked the people there and  spoke of the big-hearted generosity.  He was always shooting pictures of beers in 1-liter steins that the locals would buy them.  Just a very good overall experience for him. Boleslawiecz was the closest larger city to them.   On a sad note, but also very, "Fuck you, Hitler!" their base was actually a converted concentration camp that now stands for freedom.  Their work over there was in training the Poles and getting them proficient with NATO equipment.

Oh and thread relevant, beer was a very important part of every day life.

Yeah, the insta weddings would be different but in all honesty a deployment wedding to a girl from Rzesow is much likely to work out better than a pre-deployment special to some townie from Killeen.

10 drinks a day is completely befuddling to me and it’s hard to comprehend that 10 percent of Americans are living that way.  I’m in my forties and this year I started noticing that I would feel like shit after two beers with the grill on a weekend.  I cut it out completely from November through the New Year and noticed a real boost in general feeling.  I won’t stay tee-totaling but don’t plan to go back to even most weekends.

I swing by the “I’m an alcoholic” thread every so often and I have nothing but admiration for all of you taking this kind of thing on and helping others through.

Over the last 3-4 years, I have really made it a point to be a lot more conscious about my drinking. And figuring out what drives me to drink and figure out alternatives. I can easily go a month without a drop of alcohol. And as you mentioned, I felt better overall. More energy, better sleep, more focused and in a better mood. I wake up earlier and much more productive. I hated wasting days by drinking too much, going into a fog and getting real tired. Watching tv shows and having no real memory of what I watched. And as I got older, the hangovers are worse and last longer. The brain fog where it feels like you are going through the motions in another reality gets old. Kind of ruins the day. My concentration and awareness is lower. Too many wasted weekends with alcohol. Also much easier since my fiancee rarely drinks. Previous relationships, my significant other were heavier drinkers and we felt we needed to drink at home, bars, etc. Needing alcohol to have a good time.

I lived with a Polish family in far north Chicago, just south of Skokie.  Eventually I learned how to ask for a glass of water (szklankę wody?)

You ever got to Taste Of Polonia in Jefferson Park?

If not you definitely missed out on some amazing food, fun times and attractive women. I was engaged last time I went so had to keep my eyes focused on the pierogi and kielbasa.

Lots of beer to be had as well.

I don’t want to hear shit about alcohol until I never have to smell weed in public again.  I’m in favor of a two-pronged approach where you’re allowed to do whatever you want behind closed doors, but you are sunk to the bottom of the ocean if you bake in public. I should also be allowed to pour pine-sol over you if you reek and are sitting next to me on a plane, subway, etc.

One of the things that really was not fun about NYC was once it was fully legalized I could not even sit in a park without smelling it everywhere. I was fully in support of it being legal, but one unintended consequence was the entire city smelling like it. When I had first moved there I really enjoyed sitting in the park at Union Square. Eventually I just stopped going to parks altogether outside of one place where you couldn’t smoke anything.

It’s crazy how we as a society had about 25 years where our public spaces didn’t smell like shit all the time from people smoking narcotics and now the places that were first to clamp on obnoxious cigarette smoke just decided that weed is fine. The libertarian just flies from my body when I have to small it in parks and outside buildings all fucking day.  Time to embark on an ostracism campaign like with cigs.

I know I'm an outlier but I put dogs in the same camp.

I was kind of against the cigarette laws as I thought people should be able to do what they want as long as I don't have to pay for their dangerous and nasty habits. The problem was that when I would go to bars in college, I would have to play basketball for hours to get all the congestion out of my chest. Once the cigarette laws passed, I was so much happier not being sick or having to shower after going out to dinner or to bars.

So, now I can go to dinner and eat outside and not have to deal with smoking. However, now dogs are at all places with outdoor seating. They bark, they smell, I'm slightly allergic to them and personally, I think it is unsanitary to eat near them. I especially have a problem with it when it is a nice dining place -like sushi, for example. And it is getting more common, not less. I see dogs inside pizza joints and cafes and other low level dining experiences. I don't think there are that many people who feel like me, but I would rather eat at home than to go to a restaurant that allows dogs inside.

Dogs in restaurants inside is fucking insane, and I love my dog to death. We'll take the dog with us to the beer garden's outdoor seating area but that's it. I don't think you're an outlier wrt/ non service dogs indoors at restaurants.

I don't think I've seen folks just strolling down the street pulling on a J like they might with a cig, but the smell definitely is more distinctive than a dart. When I walk my dog by the apartments near my neighborhood, I almost always can smell something dank if it's the evening. TBH it's surprising that they're not just vaping instead of burning lol, way more discreet

People have vapes and edibles if they just need to get mellow through the day (separate convo).  The demographic blazing all day in public spaces is doing it precisely because it’s antisocial which is why it needs to be ruthlessly suppressed and not humored.

I enjoy the smell of weed. Smells better than NYC smelled in the 70's and early 80's.

I was surprised to be walking down 5th Ave or some such in NYC a couple of summers ago and the two guys in front of us were in full Cheech and Chong mode.

I didn't realize weed was legal on the streets.  That was the only time I came across it, though, for being legalized it didn't seem to be that much of a big deal.

It’s not legal in public, it’s just that assholes don’t give a fuck and police don’t enforce anything. I, too, am extremely tired of it in parks and sidewalks.

I love my two dogs, but I would not take them to a restaurant with me. I know people that do and it’s their choice to do it. In general though I agree about dogs not being in restaurants unless they are service dogs. Those should be allowed without question.

I had to basically give up beer, because I have gout (thanks, Mom!).  Wife and I both started cutting back on hard liqour a few years ago, because we just couldn’t handle the next day.

We’ve been fairly heavy wine people for years,  but she’s on meds and has to cut back. So we are in Dry January. I feel better, but we go to bed fucking early.

I wonder if beer and liquor was forced to print its nutrition facts--like virtually every other food or drink at a grocery store--would it have any affect?

Almost certainly not...McDonald's is still doing just fine, and heavy drinkers probably aren't people super concerned with their health/weight...but I think most would be at least a little surprised how many calories are in an IPA.

Looking at what, 175 or 200 per can? I've honestly never thought to look, but I know I'm not doing anything healthy drinking beers lol

You're comfortably pushing 300-350 in a 16oz 7% beer.

Not that that information has convinced me to return to the hell scape of light/lite beers.

I quit drinking during my post covid fiasco for 5 months, in my 6th month and I’m not saying I’m 100% bc I don’t want to jinx it but I’ve decided to go another 30 days no drinking so in the last 13 months it will be 8 with no alcohol.

I don’t think I’ll ever drink beer on the regular again, the NA stuff is just now getting good. Best day brewing is legit, corona and Heineken NAs are legit. Athletic used to be the one but the big boys are coming on strong. Even the craft breweries are adding NAs too.

wine and scotch are a different story but we will probably ditch the daily bottles and just stock the high end expensive shit for a nice dinner.  I probably won’t give up the twin dollar sale and getting an $80 bottle of Pinot or burgundy for $50, that shit is just too fucking tasty to say no to but I do think my days of a glass or two daily are over.

I also agree that sleep is the big issue - I’m going to put 8pm as last call from here on out.

I've never understood the "drinks per day" metric. I don't drink on weekdays anymore but have multiple drinks on weekends. I honestly don't know how that would spread out on a per day average.

Well, you’d count the number of drinks you have over the weekend, then divide by 7

Oh! And for sleep, wind downs and relaxing - I discovered kava - it’s a whole other thread but along with valerian root, skull cap and others I’ve found an entire chill routine that is not alcohol or weed and frankly is probably beneficial to my central nervous system and brain health. Kava (I use Gaia pure noble kava extract) shows up much like two glasses of wine for me. Leaves me calm and sleepy at about the 2-2.5 hour mark.

all of the herbs I mentioned - kava, valerian root, skull cap - along with others like passionflower, vervain, chamomile, ashwaganda, etc have POSITIVE impacts on your brain health and show up with the chill calming effect we all like with a stiff drink.

hemp (without thc) has similar positive benefits. Clinical dosing of hemp STARTS at 200 mg, if I need sleep in a bad way, 200-250mg of non-THC hemp is money.

also controversial but I have a script for ketamine for anxiety and I use it very very sparingly, like once a month to keep the nueroplasticity going and to have the neuroprotective qualities ketamine provides. Yes it can be abused but it is a substance that has legit science backing its therapeutic benefits, unlike the sham alcohol studies.

I think weed can be in that category too - if you want to have an escape night, alcohol is probably the worst, weed is ok, I just don’t like how it shows up for me.

Damn man, Ostrava is a pretty rough around the edges part of that corner of the world.  There’s still a few places where you can get the Europtrip vibes and that’s one of them.

Half time relaxation techniques that include self pleasure and going down on your wife or her going down on you are probably the highest level of effectiveness and positive benefits on your health that you can get. So next time it’s halftime tell her it’s for your health and if she wants you to live longer she should oblige you.

I had to go to school on brain health the last six months - not saying I’m glad it happened - shit it was safe to say I had a mild “brain injury even - but at least I took the opportunity to learn.  Alcohol threw me back into a neuro relapse with insomnia, anxiety and more, sadly it is poison. God damn though, all of that was a harrowing experience. But I’m doing great and nerve tonics, proper supplements and finding other routes to a chill routine are the silver linings for me.

As for drinking, I handled some personal demons and coincidentally soon found alcohol far less appealing. Handling negative thoughts, behaviors (other than the mortal sin of spanking the monkey) and just respecting myself and others -- since drinking also harmed them to an extent -- has greatly reduced my "need" to drink.

Independent of that, I now feel little to no desire to drink.

I bought "good" beer recently for the holidays and enjoyed it for about half a can. Then it just didn't taste good.

Tying alcohol to cancer -- which most people are particularly afraid of -- will have a significant net positive on everyone's health and mental well-being.

Beer already lists the alcohol by volume on the package, and the ingredients are about as "natural" as one could hope for: grain, hops, yeast, & water.  The beer flavored waters like Ultra and Flight, among others, also tout their low carbs.
