U.S. Surgeon General Issues New Advisory on Link Between Alcohol and Cancer Risk

I've never understood the "drinks per day" metric. I don't drink on weekdays anymore but have multiple drinks on weekends. I honestly don't know how that would spread out on a per day average.
For a male, binge episode is 5 standard drinks or more. If you're drinking this much, the average doesn't matter because it's harmful drinking. If it's 4 or less per day, you can average that out over week. If you're at or under 14 and you have no binges, this is considered moderate drinking. 14 drinks a week all the way to 1 drink a month is moderate drinking for men (7 for the ladies).

The CDC may say that 14 drinks per week is moderate, and therefore not harmful, but that definition is also there to support the alcohol industry. I grew up thinking it was normal for parents to have several drinks every night but later learned it’s uncommon. With 14 drinks someone is in the top 20% of drinkers not at the middle as implied by the word moderate.

and no judgement I was a previously heavy drinker on weekends.

It’s not legal in public, it’s just that assholes don’t give a fuck and police don’t enforce anything. I, too, am extremely tired of it in parks and sidewalks.

It is, in fact, legal to smoke weed in public in New York (same minimal restrictions as cigarettes). For better or worse, we aren’t a nanny state like Texas. We can get high, gamble and watch porn as much as we please.

Yeah, I agree that 14 is a lot, I'm just referencing NIAAA guidelines. Drinking at what is technically moderate doesn't mean you won't meet the criteria for alcohol use disorder, the pure numbers and patterns are just more of a screening tool to look for problem drinking.

Nice attempt on the dunk, but I live in San Francisco and simply made the mistake of assuming New York’s law aligned with California’s. In my observation, the social etiquette around lighting up in public has eroded over time but YMMV I suppose.

What "average"? mean, median, mode, or range?

Most days I didn't drink, hell most weeks I don't, but football season I'll have a couple of beers (or 3), and I have 2-3 golf trips a year when I could drink 6 or more a day, and some liquor).

So my answer is 1,0,0,10+

So one 5 for 1 at Abels.

Did some googling on alcohol and found a couple of depressing factoids

standard pour of wine is 5 oz so for ethanol equivalents you are talking 1 “drink” is a 12 oz beer, 5 oz glass of wine, and 1 1/2 oz of 90 proof distilled spirit. Not very much

at about 1 1/2 drinks ethanol starts fucking with insulin secretion and causing insulin resistance.

Also ethanol metabolism pathway releases free radicals = oxidative stress = local tissue and DNA damage

Binge drinking is much worse in terms of oxidative stress and insulin resistance

10 drinks a day is completely befuddling to me and it’s hard to comprehend that 10 percent of Americans are living that way.  I’m in my forties and this year I started noticing that I would feel like shit after two beers with the grill on a weekend.  I cut it out completely from November through the New Year and noticed a real boost in general feeling.  I won’t stay tee-totaling but don’t plan to go back to even most weekends.

I swing by the “I’m an alcoholic” thread every so often and I have nothing but admiration for all of you taking this kind of thing on and helping others through.

10% correlates pretty well with the number of alcoholics in a population.

Half time relaxation techniques that include self pleasure and going down on your wife or her going down on you are probably the highest level of effectiveness and positive benefits on your health that you can get. So next time it’s halftime tell her it’s for your health and if she wants you to live longer she should oblige you.

Yeah that sounds great in theory but we both know you'd kick my ass if I drove to your house and tried any of that.

It’s crazy how we as a society had about 25 years where our public spaces didn’t smell like shit all the time from people smoking narcotics and now the places that were first to clamp on obnoxious cigarette smoke just decided that weed is fine. The libertarian just flies from my body when I have to small it in parks and outside buildings all fucking day.  Time to embark on an ostracism campaign like with cigs.

I love the smell of weed in the morning.

Smells like... victory.

One thing ive learned from this thread is that its shocking how little people know how awful drinking actually is for you.

and this is coming from a guy who has 350 bottles of mezcal and 600 craft beers at home

also, weed (drinks and edibles) will surpass alcohol in sales in less than a century. People gonna look back on alcohol like we do today on smoking

I keep talking about my experience - well it’s what I do - but to get well and recover from lung, ENT, heart, vascular and brain injuries from COVID I had to have a perfect diet (anti-inflammatory and low histamine) along with targeted supplements - and as I got better I tried to cheat with a glass of wine on several occasions. Even a half glass of wine several days in a row threw me back into a tailspin of symptoms. Our bodies do not like alcohol on any level.

I’m really not sure what I’m going to do. I LOVE high end, exquisite wines. We have probably 80 bottles that would make a sommelier blush. I’m deeply conflicted on how to move forward.

That dog, and I've seen the same look from some kids in my van, looks like it wants to be anywhere else but there.

Sell em all at once to a wine dealer. Do something fun with the money. Like vodka. Like a nice vacation.

Can’t leave a dog in a car. Dangerous for the dog in hotter temps, and dangerous for your windows in mild temps.

the dog can stay at home by itself.  A toddler, not so much, at least legally.

I don't take my dogs w/ my while running errands.  I wish people w/ kids would extend the same courtesy.

Unruly kids are my pet peeve.  There are some shitty-ass parents around.

No one voluntarily takes their kids to run errands.  You think I want to be around my kids when I am grocery shopping?  Do you think your parents wanted you around for errands?

Kinda got derailed, I love my dog to pieces, but only take him to spots that are specially advertised as dog friendly, not just “dog allowed.”

The difference in kids and dogs are that the one is always going to be a dog, but all kids are going to be adults some day and have to learn to navigate the world.  Also, all of us are going to be relying on either our kids or someone else’s to wipe our asses or just keep the lights on when we are old.

I did used to wish for a drink when I had to take them on errands though.

Sure thing. I'll just start spanking my 3 year old in public and see how that goes down.

(generally speaking, though, I do understand your point about parents who truly don't give a fuck what they're kids are doing and can't be bothered to pay attention)

Ray Wylie Hubbard said it best:

“Now the murderers and the rapists they go in this fiery lake
As well as most of the politician and the cops on the take
And all the mothers who wait till they get to K-Mart to spank their kids
And instead of showing what to do what's right
They just hit 'em for what they did”

Yeah, man, I was just making a point for affect. I don't actually spank my kids (that's what a belt is for).

But, with a 3 year, you can take them aside, get on their level, explain what's right until you're blue in the face...and sometimes it just ain't gonna to be your day. But occasionally you have to take them in public anyway.

I’m not sure that line of thinking is going to prevail. Take some L-Arginine and citrulline and leave the negative aspects of alcohol behind. Don’t get me wrong I’m not happy about where this is going but no point in denying the reality.
